Star Wars Zero Company Cautionary Intel Explained

Cautionary Intel reduces the chance of your Operators suffering Injuries from Dangerous Operations by 20% in Star Wars Zero Company. It is a campaign-level protection effect, not normal Intel currency, and it does not reduce damage or Injuries suffered during Tactical Missions.

What Is Cautionary Intel in Star Wars Zero Company?

Despite the name, Cautionary Intel is not a pile of Intel that gets added to your normal resource total. It is a passive effect that reduces the chance of an Operator receiving an Injury while assigned to a Dangerous Operation by 20%.

That distinction is easy to miss when an Operation gives you Cautionary Intel as one of its possible rewards. Normal Intel is the resource you spend to launch Operations from the Holotable. Cautionary Intel is effectively a safety bonus for those Operations.

You don't activate it before sending someone out, and it isn't an item that needs to be equipped on an Operator. Once you have the effect, it works on the specific situation named in its description: Operators taking part in Dangerous Operations.

What Are Dangerous Operations?

Operations are the non-combat assignments you launch from the Holotable between Tactical Missions. You spend Intel, assign Operators when required, choose how Zero Company approaches the situation, and then receive the resulting rewards or consequences without entering a normal turn-based battle.

Some of these assignments carry a chance of Operator Injury. When an Operation is dangerous enough to carry that risk, Cautionary Intel helps reduce the chance that an assigned Operator returns hurt.

This is separate from a Tactical Mission where you physically deploy a squad onto a combat map. Cautionary Intel is not giving your team 20% damage resistance, 20% more health, or a 20% lower chance of being injured whenever someone gets downed in combat.

What Does Cautionary Intel Actually Affect?

The wording is very specific: Cautionary Intel reduces the chance of Injuries on Dangerous Operations by 20%.

That means I would not apply the bonus mentally to every Injury system in Zero Company. It isn't a general 20% Injury resistance stat for your entire roster.

Cautionary Intel does not:

Reduce incoming combat damage, prevent an Operator from being Downed, improve the Rally mechanic, heal an existing Injury, shorten Medbay recovery, protect Operators during every Tactical Mission, or prevent scripted story events.

It specifically helps when an Operation carries an Injury risk.

That last distinction is worth remembering with authored Operators. For example, Cautionary Intel has nothing to do with the scripted events surrounding Trick later in the campaign. If that's what you're trying to prevent, my Star Wars Zero Company how to save Trick guide explains what actually happens.

Is Cautionary Intel Worth Getting?

I think Cautionary Intel is a good long-term campaign bonus, particularly once you're regularly sending Operators on risky assignments instead of relying on the same handful of safe Operations.

An Injury has consequences beyond the Operation itself. An injured Operator may need Medbay treatment, treatment can cost resources, and recovery can interfere with who you actually want available for upcoming Tactical Missions.

So the value of Cautionary Intel isn't simply “20% fewer bad outcomes.” Every Injury it prevents can also mean one less Operator occupying the Medbay and one more squad member available when a mission you care about appears.

It becomes even more useful if you're playing with Permadeath enabled. Cautionary Intel doesn't make Dangerous Operations harmless, but reducing unnecessary Injuries is more valuable when accumulating Injuries can eventually threaten an Operator permanently.

Cautionary Intel or +25 Maximum Intel?

One place you'll encounter Cautionary Intel is as a reward choice where another route can increase your maximum Intel by 25. This is where the decision becomes more interesting than the tooltip makes it look.

The +25 Intel cap is immediately understandable. You can hold more Intel at once, which gives you more flexibility when several useful Operations appear together.

Cautionary Intel is less visible, but its benefit can keep paying off every time you send Operators on Dangerous Operations for the remainder of the campaign.

My preference would usually be Cautionary Intel unless I'm routinely hitting the Intel cap and losing potential Intel because I cannot spend it quickly enough. A higher resource ceiling solves a specific economy problem. Reduced Injury risk solves a roster-management problem every time a dangerous assignment appears.

If you already have enough Intel capacity for the Operations you're regularly running, another 25 capacity is mostly unused headroom. Cautionary Intel at least has the opportunity to prevent an actual negative outcome.

Is Cautionary Intel Permanent?

The Cautionary Intel reward functions as a persistent campaign benefit rather than a one-Operation consumable. You are not spending the effect the first time it prevents an Injury.

That is also why I rate it more highly than the description may initially suggest. A 20% reduction on one Operation would be fairly minor. A persistent reduction applied across repeated Dangerous Operations has much more potential value over a full campaign.

However, Zero Company does not make every passive campaign modifier particularly easy to inspect afterward. Players have reported taking Cautionary Intel and then struggling to find a clear stat screen showing the bonus.

I would not interpret the lack of an obvious character buff icon as evidence that it only lasts temporarily. This is a strategic-layer modifier rather than an Operator combat status.

There Is Also a Cautionary Intel Upgrade

To make the naming slightly more confusing, Cautionary Intel can also appear as a Den upgrade with the same core effect: reducing Injury chance on Dangerous Operations by 20%.

So if you've seen “Cautionary Intel” in two different places, you're probably not imagining it. The name is used for the same type of campaign benefit outside of the original reward choice.

What I would not assume without the game explicitly confirming it is that obtaining two sources automatically creates a 40% reduction. The existence of two identically named effects does not by itself tell us how duplicate modifiers are handled internally.

Until the stacking behavior is clearly documented, I would treat each source according to its displayed tooltip rather than building a strategy around an assumed combined percentage.

How Important Is a 20% Injury Reduction?

The value depends on how aggressively you're using Operations.

If you almost always choose low-risk assignments and rarely send important Operators into anything with an Injury chance, Cautionary Intel can sit quietly in the background without doing much.

If you're constantly using the Holotable, chasing Zone Influence, rewards, Contacts, and other campaign benefits, your roster is exposed to more Operation-related Injury rolls. That's when the effect starts making more sense.

I also wouldn't use Cautionary Intel as an excuse to send an already battered Operator into every Dangerous Operation. A reduction in risk is still just that, a reduction. It doesn't turn a dangerous assignment into a guaranteed safe one.

If I have an Operator carrying multiple Injuries and another healthy Operator can do the job, I'm still sending the healthier one. Cautionary Intel is best viewed as an extra layer of protection on top of good roster management rather than a replacement for it.

Keeping multiple useful Operators ready also matters once your Tactical Missions get harder. My Star Wars Zero Company best team and squad composition guide covers how I split roles across the squad instead of relying entirely on a couple of Operators.

Cautionary Intel in Simple Terms

If an Operation offers Cautionary Intel and the name leaves you wondering what you're actually selecting, you're choosing a persistent 20% reduction to the chance of Operators being injured on Dangerous Operations.

It doesn't give you normal Intel, it doesn't increase combat defenses, and it doesn't automatically make dangerous assignments safe. Its value comes from reducing one of the long-term costs of repeatedly sending your roster out on risky non-combat Operations.

Between Cautionary Intel and +25 maximum Intel, I'd generally take Cautionary Intel unless my existing Intel cap is actively preventing me from banking enough Intel for the Operations I want to run.
