Aion 2 Elyos or Asmodian: Which Faction to Pick
Choosing Elyos or Asmodian in Aion 2 now after launch looks like a major build decision, but it isn't really a power choice. Both factions have access to the same eight launch classes, and there is currently no confirmed Global advantage in stats, skills, or combat strength for either side. What you're actually choosing is your version of Atreia: the faction story and starting region you'll experience, the visual atmosphere surrounding your character, and most importantly, which side you're standing on when Elyos and Asmodians eventually meet as enemies.

Should You Pick Elyos or Asmodian in Aion 2?
Pick Elyos if you prefer the brighter side of Atreia and its faction story, or Asmodian if the darker and more severe side of the world appeals to you more. If you're joining friends, however, I'd ignore both of those preferences and simply choose whichever faction your group is playing.
There isn't a confirmed gameplay advantage that makes Elyos the meta faction or Asmodians the better combat choice. You're not gaining a stronger Gladiator by making it Elyos, nor does an Asmodian Ranger receive some inherent advantage that the Elyos version doesn't have. Class selection and faction selection are solving two different questions.
That makes this considerably easier than choosing a class. Your class determines the actual combat toolkit you will interact with constantly. Faction is better thought of as choosing which half of Aion 2's world you belong to.
What Actually Changes Between Elyos and Asmodians?
The differences begin with where and why you're fighting rather than how your buttons work. Elyos and Asmodians experience different starting regions and faction campaigns, occupy opposite sides of the wider conflict, and eventually oppose one another through Aion 2's faction warfare.
The two sides also retain different identities. Elyos are associated with the brighter, light-facing side of Atreia, whereas Asmodians come from its darker and harsher counterpart. The contrast is consequently visible in the environments and tone surrounding each faction even though Aion 2 has reduced some of the sharper physical distinctions players may remember from the original game.
One thing I would not use as a deciding factor is armor. Players with experience on the existing Asian version report that gear appearances are largely the same between factions, and character customization has also become much less racially restrictive than it was in the original Aion. If you're expecting two completely separate wardrobes where Elyos equipment is angelic and every Asmodian armor set is demonic, that's not a good basis for the decision.
The world itself is the more meaningful aesthetic difference. Community impressions still characterize the Elyos side as generally brighter and the Asmodian side as darker, but even there the divide isn't necessarily as extreme as veteran Aion players might expect.
Pick Elyos for the Brighter Side of Atreia
Elyos make the most sense if you prefer brighter fantasy environments and want that atmosphere to form the backdrop of your early progression. Their side represents the lighter visual half of the faction contrast without changing the fundamental classes you're able to play.
I also wouldn't assume that choosing Elyos locks your character into looking stereotypically angelic. Aion 2's expanded character creator gives players much more visual freedom, and community discussion around the existing version specifically notes that the racial appearance differences are much less restrictive than they were previously.
So I'd choose Elyos for the world around your character rather than the character model itself. If the brighter environments and Elyos campaign appeal to you more, that's a legitimate difference you'll actually notice while playing.
Pick Asmodian for a Darker Fantasy Atmosphere
Asmodian is the alternative for players who prefer the darker side of Aion's setting. Their homeland carries the harsher and more shadowed identity traditionally associated with Asmodae, making the choice more compelling if mystical, cold, or darker fantasy environments are more your thing.
What I wouldn't do is choose Asmodian solely because you're expecting the dramatic racial features associated with old Aion. Community players comparing the two versions specifically point out that some of those old visual distinctions have been normalized in Aion 2.
That's an important difference for returning players. The old logic of “I want this particular racial appearance, so I need Asmodian” is less useful when character creation provides considerably more freedom. The stronger reason to choose Asmodian is that you want its side of the story, its environments, and its faction identity.
Elyos and Asmodians Have the Same Classes
Your faction does not lock you out of a launch class. Elyos and Asmodians both have access to Templar, Gladiator, Assassin, Ranger, Sorcerer, Spiritmaster, Cleric, and Chanter.
This is probably the most important misconception to clear up before character creation because it means you don't need to coordinate two decisions at once. Decide what you want your character to do in combat separately from deciding which faction you want that character to belong to.
For example, a Gladiator remains the same fundamental class regardless of which faction banner is above its head. If your priority is choosing around PvE performance, our Aion 2 best PvE class tier list compares the classes around group and endgame value, while the Aion 2 best solo class tier list looks at the same roster specifically from the perspective of playing independently.
I'd make that class decision based on combat. Make the Elyos-versus-Asmodian decision based on everything surrounding it.
Your Friends Should Decide the Faction Before Your Aesthetic Does
If you're entering Aion 2 with other people, this is the one situation where I think there's a much clearer answer: coordinate before anyone creates their main character.
Elyos and Asmodians are opposing factions. That isn't a cosmetic allegiance you select and then forget about; faction conflict is part of Aion's identity, with the Abyss bringing that rivalry directly into PvP. Choosing opposite factions because one person liked Elyos wings and another liked Asmodian scenery creates a much bigger practical problem than simply compromising on the aesthetic.
I would therefore establish the faction first for a friend group, Legion, or existing MMO community and let everyone choose their class afterward. All eight classes exist on both sides, so nobody needs to sacrifice the playstyle they wanted just to stay with the group.
NC has also not announced a Global faction-change feature that you should rely on as an escape hatch. Until one is actually confirmed, I'd treat faction selection as a long-term character choice rather than assuming you can pay to undo it later.
Faction Population Could Matter, but Don't Guess Before Servers Are Live
Faction balance is the one variable that could eventually make Elyos versus Asmodian more than story and aesthetics. A heavily populated or organized side can naturally change what faction warfare feels like on a particular server.
But that doesn't make “pick whichever faction has more players” useful advice before the population actually exists. Global server structure and population distribution aren't settled enough to declare Elyos or Asmodian the safer population choice, and Korean or Taiwanese server trends don't automatically tell you what players on your Global server are going to choose.
I'd especially ignore anyone presenting faction popularity as evidence that one side is mechanically stronger. Population can be influenced by aesthetics, guild coordination, community trends, recognizable characters, and where large groups happen to roll. More players choosing one side does not create a hidden stat bonus for that faction.
If you care heavily about PvP, population is something worth reassessing once Global servers have real players on them. Until then, our Aion 2 best PvP class tier list is much more relevant to your character's actual combat capabilities than trying to predict which faction will eventually control your server.
So I wouldn't overthink Elyos versus Asmodian as a power decision. If you're solo, choose the side whose world and story you actually want to spend time in. If you're playing with friends, choose together. The combat decision comes afterward, because the same class roster is waiting for you on either side.
