Cooking in Avowed is a useful way to restore Health and Essence while also providing buffs to help in battle. While it won't replace potions in the middle of a fight, preparing and eating meals between encounters can make a big difference in your survival.
Here’s a quick guide explaining cooking in Avowed.
How to Cook Food in Avowed
Find a Campfire
To start cooking, return to your party camp by interacting with an Adra Pillar at a campsite. You can also fast travel to camp using the tent icons on the map screen.
Use the Cauldron
At the camp, look for the cauldron above the campfire.
Interact with it to open the cooking menu, where you can see all available recipes.
Select Ingredients
Choose a meal from the list.
Use the required ingredients to prepare it.
Where to Find Ingredients
Buy from vendors – Grocers and general stores in Paradis and other cities sell raw ingredients.
Loot from enemies – Some fallen foes drop food items.
Gather from plants – Search bushes, trees, and other natural sources for ingredients.
Tip: Enable the UI setting that highlights interactable objects on the compass/minimap to easily spot food items.
Why Cooking is Important
1. Restores Health and Essence
Unlike potions, food gradually restores Health and Essence over time instead of providing an instant refill.
It’s especially useful for magic-heavy builds that burn through Essence quickly.
2. Provides Buffs
Some meals offer temporary buffs that improve combat effectiveness.
Cooking the right meals before a tough fight can give you an edge.
3. Conserves Potions
Since potions are limited, eating food between fights allows you to save your potions for emergencies.
How Does Eating Work in Avowed?
Food does not heal instantly like in Skyrim.
After eating, you gain Regen meters next to your Health/Essence bars.
These meters refill your resources over time, especially when out of combat.
Final Thoughts
Cooking might not seem essential at first, but it’s a valuable tool for staying alive and managing resources. Always keep a supply of ingredients and make sure to cook meals regularly so you're prepared for whatever dangers the Living Lands throw at you.
