Shears are a must-have tool in Aloft, especially if you’re ready to start gathering wool from sheep or alpacas. Wool is critical for crafting advanced items like sails and fabrics, so getting shears is one of your first steps toward unlocking the game’s later stages. Here’s a simple guide to help you craft them.

Note: summary at bottom

Step 1: Collect the Materials for Shears

To make shears, you’ll need the following materials:

  • 1 Carved Wood

  • 2 Hardstones

Finding Hardstones:

  • Hardstones can be found in the Emerald Isles, the first biome you explore.

  • Look for black square nodes on the ground.

  • Use a pickaxe to break the nodes and collect Hardstones.

Don’t Have a Pickaxe Yet?
Craft a Stone Pickaxe using:

  • 1 Sharp Stone

  • 1 Stone

  • 1 Wood

Crafting Carved Wood:

  • To get Carved Wood, combine the following at a workbench:

    • 3 Wood

    • 1 Hardstone

Step 2: Craft the Shears

Once you have your Carved Wood and Hardstones, head to your workbench.

  • Open the crafting menu and select Shears.

  • Combine the materials and craft your shiny new tool.

Why You Need Shears

Shears are used to harvest wool from sheep and alpacas. Wool is essential for:

  • Crafting Wool Sails (needed for exploring new biomes).

  • Building machinery like the Loom and Spinner.

Pro Tips:

  1. Stock Up on Materials: Hardstones are used in a lot of recipes, so grab extra while you’re mining.

  2. Use Your Wool Wisely: Save some wool for making sails—it’s a key resource for reaching the second biome, Fallen Heights.

Summary

Gather 2 Hardstones and craft 1 Carved Wood at your workbench.

Use the materials to craft Shears.

Start collecting wool to unlock advanced crafting options.

With your new shears in hand, you’ll be well on your way to upgrading your island and sailing to new horizons. Happy snipping!
