Is Dragonwilds Free to Play?

Nope. RuneScape: Dragonwilds is not free to play. It’s a paid early access game and currently costs $29.99 on Steam. That price gives you access to the full early access version, including regular updates and new content as it rolls out. But there’s no free demo or trial—if you want in, you’ve got to pay.

Why It Costs Money

Unlike the traditional RuneScape MMORPG, which has a long-running free-to-play model, Dragonwilds is a survival crafting game set on the continent of Ashenfall. It’s a totally different structure. Think less grinding goblins for bronze swords and more chopping trees, building shelters, and occasionally getting torched by ancient dragons.

You can play solo or with up to three other players in co-op, and Jagex has promised regular updates to expand regions, skills, enemies, and more.

Will It Ever Be Free to Play?

As of now, there’s no word on a free version… Not during early access, and not confirmed after launch either. So if you're hoping for a free-to-play option like classic RuneScape, don't hold your breath.

Final Blurb

RuneScape: Dragonwilds may be set in the same universe, but the price tag sets it apart. It’s $29.99 on Steam, early access only, and absolutely not free. Survival doesn’t come cheap—but hey, neither do dragons.sometime in winter 2026. Until then, PC players get first dibs.
