Of Ash and Steel How to Get a Map

The missing map is one of the biggest early frustrations in Of Ash and Steel, so knowing when you finally get one helps a lot as you push through the first chapter. Note this is a WIP and will be updated as we play more.
How the Map Is Unlocked
The only confirmed detail is that the map becomes available after Chapter 1. The game does not offer any way to get it earlier, and nothing in Chapter 1 unlocks it no matter where you go or who you talk to.
What You Can Rely On
The developer confirmed that the map exists and that you gain access to it sometime after finishing Chapter 1. Players who reached later content also mention that the map lets you add your own notes, although we haven’t personally confirmed this part yet. No other steps are confirmed as of yet either, but we’ll update when we figure it out. There is no known trainer, item, or shop that sells it, and no early unlock has ever been reported.
This means the only thing you need to focus on is progressing the main story until Chapter 1 ends. Side quests, trainers, campfires, and beds do not affect map access.
How To Handle Navigation Until Then
Use roads, bridges, towers, and big terrain changes to keep track of your route. The city is the hardest area to navigate before the map, so sticking to major streets and following walls or waterways helps you avoid going in circles.
Do not waste time searching for hidden map items or NPCs in Chapter 1. None have been confirmed by players or devs.
Final Blurb
The map becomes available only after Chapter 1 is over. Push the story ahead, finish the chapter, and the game finally lets you use one later on.
