OSRS How to Start the Barracuda Trials Guide
Old School RuneScape (OSRS)

The Barracuda Trials unlock some of the best early rewards in Sailing, so knowing how to start each one saves you a ton of confusion when the NPC won’t spawn or the start prompt doesn’t appear.

How to Start the Barracuda Trials

Each Barracuda Trial only starts when you meet the level requirement and have the right boat parts equipped. You must also sail to the correct trial island and talk to the Trial Master there. Only skiffs are allowed for every trial.

Requirements for Every Trial

The Tempor Tantrum

  • Sailing level needed 30

  • Trial Master Rum dashed Ralph

  • Boat parts needed iron helm and oak masts and linen sails

  • Location The Storm Tempor

The Jubbly Jive

  • Sailing level needed 55

  • Trial Master Gurtob

  • Boat parts needed inoculation station and mithril helm

  • Location Backwater

The Gwenith Glide

  • Sailing level needed 72

  • Trial Master Gwyna

  • Boat parts needed listed on the island

  • Location Porth Gwenith

Why Some NPCs Might Not Appear

If you cannot see some of the characters needed it may be because your client hides certain NPCs. Entity hider plugins remove the Trial Master and his boat. Turn off entity hider, restart your client, and Ralph appears normally. This fixes most missing NPC issues instantly.

You also must be sitting at the helm when you click the trial prompt. If you try to start from the deck without controlling the ship, the trial will not activate.

If the boat parts do not meet the minimum requirements, Ralph will not let you begin. Check your helm tier and your mast and sail tier before trying again.

How Each Trial Works After You Start It

Trials use timed ocean obstacle courses. You deliver rum or lost supplies to the Barracudas before the timer runs out. Each trial has 3 difficulty ranks Swordfish, Shark, and Marlin. Each first time completion gives a chunk of bonus experience and unlocks the next rank.

Your best time and highest rank save to the scoreboard so you can retry for faster clears later.

Barracuda Trial Rewards

Each rank gives a different reward. These parts are used in higher level Sailing construction.

  • Stormy key from the Tempor Tantrum Swordfish rank

  • Barrel stand from the Tempor Tantrum Shark rank

  • Ralph’s fabric roll from the Tempor Tantrum Marlin rank

  • Fetid key from the Jubbly Jive Swordfish rank

  • Captured wind mote from the Jubbly Jive Shark rank

  • Gurtob’s fabric roll from the Jubbly Jive Marlin rank

  • Serrated key from the Gwenith Glide Swordfish rank

  • Heart of Ithell from the Gwenith Glide Shark rank

  • Stink Bomb from GB at Shark rank (but not really)

  • Gwyna’s fabric roll from the Gwenith Glide Marlin rank

Final Blurb

The Barracuda Trials unlock clean rewards as you climb Sailing levels, but they only start when your boat setup, location, and level line up right. Turn off anything hiding NPCs, check your gear, and talk to the Trial Master from the helm to start each challenge without issues.
