OSRS Sailing Wind Catcher Guide

The Wind Catcher is one of the most useful ship facilities in OSRS Sailing, letting players capture and store wind motes while exploring the sea. It’s an important mid-level upgrade that connects with the Barracuda Trials and makes ship navigation smoother.

How to Unlock the Wind Catcher

To build the Wind Catcher, you need 53 Sailing and 47 Construction. However, you’ll also need a Captured Wind Mote, which is only obtained through the Jubbly Jive Barracuda Trial that requires 55 Sailing.

This means you can technically unlock the build option earlier, but you won’t be able to craft it until you’ve completed that trial.

Wind Catcher Overview

The Wind Catcher lets you store up to two bursts of wind as motes while sailing. Once stored, you can release them anytime to give your ship a quick speed boost.

  • Each Wind Mote used grants 40 Sailing XP.

  • You must activate the Wind Catcher before it can collect motes.

  • It can only be used if built directly in front of the helm, since you need to be in position to release the wind.

If you’re already storing two motes and another forms, it’ll be automatically released, so timing your catches matters.

Crafting the Wind Catcher

To create the Wind Catcher, gather the materials below and build it at your ship’s facility hotspot.

Requirements

  • Sailing 53

  • Construction 47

Materials Needed

  • 4 Teak Planks

  • 16 Steel Nails

  • 8 Steel Bars

  • 4 Lead Bars

  • 10,000 Air Runes

  • 1 Captured Wind Mote

Total Cost: Around 71,000 coins depending on market prices.

Each build takes 3 ticks (1.8 seconds) and provides 741 Construction XP.

Tips and Extra Info

  • You don’t have to keep it active to spend motes, only to store them.

  • Completing the Barracuda Trial once is enough to keep farming Wind Motes.

  • If you move the Wind Catcher to a non-front hotspot you won’t be able to release motes while steering. Never move it to a burb location.

Final Blurb

The Wind Catcher is a solid mid-tier upgrade that makes open-sea travel far more flexible. It’s not just a cool visual upgrade, it’s a real quality-of-life tool for Sailing XP and mobility. Build it after the Barracuda Trial and you’ll never regret it.

FAQ

How many motes can the Wind Catcher hold?

Up to two at once.

Can you use the Wind Catcher while inactive?

Only to release motes, not to collect them.

Why is the build level 53 if the item needs 55 Sailing?

The unlock level and the acquisition requirement are slightly mismatched, likely intentional to line up with trial progression.

Do motes work automatically?

No, you need to manually release them when you want the boost.

Is it worth building early?

Yes, once you hit 55 Sailing, it’s one of the best utility facilities on your ship.
