"Taking French Leave" is a main quest in KCD2, following Via Argentum. Your goal is to rescue Hans Capon from Maleshov Fortress, while also completing a side task for Rosa Ruthard. Here’s a simple quest guide and walkthrough.

Step 1: Speak to Lord Kunzlin Ruthard

• Ruthard informs you that Hans Capon is imprisoned at Maleshov.

• He suggests talking to his daughter, Rosa Ruthard, who knows a secret way inside.

• Rosa also asks you to retrieve an item (Rosa’s Book), which will be useful later.

Step 2: Find the Secret Tunnel to Maleshov

Follow the Clues from Rosa

1. Head south of Kuttenberg to find the stable handler.

   • Speak to him to prepare horses for the escape.

2. Go to the old church ruins nearby.

   • Look through a window to spot a collapsed building.

Follow the Stone Crosses

• First cross: Found on the ground, points north.

• Second cross: Next to a tree, points northeast.

• Final marker: A gravestone leaning on a tree.

Dig to Reveal the Tunnel

• Use a Spade at the grave site to uncover a hidden tunnel.

• Follow the tunnel to enter Maleshov’s cellar.

Step 3: Infiltrate Maleshov Fortress

Move Through the Courtyard

• After a cutscene, you’ll find yourself overlooking the courtyard.

• The guards are still discussing their posts, so move quickly but carefully.

Steal Keys & Disable the Cook

1. Enter the wooden hut near the spiral steps.

2. Knock out the cook (her back is turned).

3. Steal all the keys from her:

   • Door & chest keys

   • Maleshov chambers key

   • Maleshov fortress key

   • Maleshov tower key

4. Exit the hut and take out the guard nearby (hide his body in the hut).

Step 4: Find Rosa’s Book (Optional)

• Sneak up the central tower steps.

• Avoid guards until they move to the dining hall.

• Enter Lady Ofka’s room and either intimidate, pay, or lie to her.

• Grab the Book of Anecdotes near the window.

Step 5: Rescue Hans Capon & Vauquelin Brabant

• Use the stolen keys (or grab the Tower Key from Lady Ofka’s pulpit) to unlock Hans' cell.

• Hans is with a knight named Vauquelin Brabant.

• You must escort them to the horses safely.

Companion Commands

• "Get to the horses" – They run to the stables (risk of alerting guards).

• "Back" – Makes them retreat to safety.

• "Stay" – Keeps them in the tower until you clear the way (recommended).

Step 6: Clear the Stables & Escape

Take Out the Three Guards

1. One patrols between the tower and stable entrance.

2. One stands near the horses.

3. One watches from the walkway near the gate.

• Use stealth to eliminate them quietly.

• Save with Savior Schnapps before engaging if needed.

Signal the Escape

• Walk to the horses and light a torch.

• Hans and Vauquelin will run down safely since all threats are gone.

• Open the gate and watch the cutscene as they escape.

Final Step: Deliver Rosa’s Book (Optional)

• Return Rosa’s Book to Rosa Ruthard.

• Being kind to her can unlock romance options later in the game.

Final Tips:

• Use stealth to avoid unnecessary fights.
• Take out the cook first to gain all the keys.
• Wait for guards to move before sneaking upstairs.
• Clear the stables before signaling Hans and Vauquelin.
• Deliver Rosa’s Book for extra rewards and romance options.
