The Elephant in Split Fiction: A Hidden It Takes Two Easter Egg

Hazelight Studios is known for sneaking references to its past games into Split Fiction, and one of the most brutal callbacks is the return of Cutie the Elephant from It Takes Two. If you played that game, you might remember Cutie’s tragic fate—a moment so unexpectedly dark that it became one of the most infamous scenes in co-op gaming.

Now, Cutie has made a not-so-triumphant return in Split Fiction, though this time, she’s taken on a different role—a pet store mascot in a futuristic city. But Hazelight wasn’t about to let players just walk past her without causing some trouble.

Where to Find Cutie in Split Fiction

  • Cutie appears in Neon Revenge, specifically during the Play Me Techno section.

  • After Mio drops a ladder for Zoe, Zoe will need to use her ability to open a shuttered door.

  • Head through and look for a graffiti-covered subway tunnel entrance.

  • Just to the right, you’ll see the Mastodon Pet Store—and standing in front of it is a very familiar-looking stuffed elephant.

What Can You Do to Cutie?

If Hazelight went through the effort of bringing back Cutie, you know they weren’t going to let her escape unharmed.

  • Zoe can use her whip to tear off Cutie’s arm and leg, just like in It Takes Two.

  • Once you dismember the poor mascot, you’ll unlock the Rose’s Best Friend achievement.

  • Just like before, Cutie doesn’t fight back or react much—she just takes her punishment in silence.

Why Did Hazelight Bring Back Cutie?

Cutie’s return is equal parts Easter egg and twisted joke. In It Takes Two, the stuffed elephant scene shocked players, forcing Cody and May to do something awful to prove a point about their daughter’s emotions. It was unexpected, brutal, and a little funny in a deeply uncomfortable way.

Here, Hazelight fully embraces the dark humor of that moment by letting players relive the experience—this time, without any sad backstory to justify it. It’s as if the developers are saying, "We know what we did, and we know you remember it too."

Final Blurb

Cutie’s appearance in Split Fiction is both an inside joke and a callback to one of Hazelight’s most memorable moments. Whether you find it hilarious, cruel, or just unnecessary, one thing’s for sure—Cutie just can’t catch a break.
