What is Scribing in ESO? A Beginner’s Guide to Creating Custom Skills
What is Scribing in ESO, you ask? Scribing is a system in The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) that lets players create and customize their own skills. Introduced in the Gold Road chapter in 2024, Scribing allows you to craft powerful and unique abilities, offering more ways to personalize your character and playstyle. Continue on to see how it works!
How Scribing Works
Scribing revolves around three main components:
Grimoires:
These are the base templates for the abilities you want to create. Each Grimoire is linked to a specific skill line, like Destruction Staff, Mages Guild, or Two-Handed weapons.
Scripts:
Scripts are modifiers that change or enhance your chosen Grimoire. They come in three types:
Focus Scripts: Decide the ability's main function, like dealing damage, healing, or providing utility.
Signature Scripts: Add unique effects, such as bonus damage or special animations.
Affix Scripts: Include existing buffs and debuffs, like Major Force or Minor Endurance.
Luminous Ink:
This is the crafting material needed to create abilities. You can find Luminous Ink by completing quests, gathering from resource nodes, or defeating enemies.
How to Unlock Scribing
To start using Scribing, you’ll need to meet the following requirements:
Own the Gold Road chapter.
Have a character at least level 30 or with access to the Champion Point system.
Once you meet these requirements:
Speak to Adept Irnard Rirnil, found near Mages Guild locations.
Start the Scribing quest by interacting with the pamphlet "On Behalf of the Mages Guild of All Tamriel" near the Skingrad Wayshrine.
How to Use Scribing
After unlocking the system, you can craft abilities at the Scribing Altar in the Scholarium, located in Eyevea. Here’s how the process works:
Choose a Grimoire:
Select a base ability that fits the skill line you want.
Add Scripts:
Enhance your ability by adding Focus, Signature, and Affix Scripts. Each script adds unique effects to your skill.
Spend Luminous Ink:
Each Script requires Luminous Ink to craft. The amount needed depends on the complexity of the ability.
Once crafted, the new ability will appear in your skill menu, ready to be slotted into your build. It’s as simple as that!
Why Use Scribing?
Scribing offers several benefits:
Customization:
Create abilities that fit your playstyle regardless of your role.
Versatility:
Add new skills to existing skill lines giving you more options for combat.
Engagement:
Encourages exploring the world to gather materials and resources needed for crafting.
Scribing in ESO is a powerful tool for customizing your character and making your build unique. By using Grimoires, Scripts, and Luminous Ink, you can craft abilities tailored to what you specifically want on your journey throughout Tamriel.
