Ace Combat 8 Black Screen Fix
Ace Combat 8 can black screen at several different points on PC, including the initial launch, shader compilation, Campaign loading, and even after changing graphics settings. The important part is figuring out which version you have, because the fixes are not all targeting the same problem.

How to Fix the Ace Combat 8 Black Screen
If Ace Combat 8 is installed on an HDD, move it to an SSD first. The PC version officially requires an SSD, and players who were getting stuck on the initial black screen have reported the problem disappearing after moving the installation to an NVMe SSD.
If you're already on an SSD, the next fix I would try is resetting the game's GameUserSettings.ini file. This has fixed startup crashes, shader-compilation failures, and black-screen-related launch problems for multiple players.
Start Here
Game installed on HDD → Move it to an SSD
Already on SSD → Reset GameUserSettings.ini
Black screen started after graphics changes → Clear shader cache
Still failing → Verify Steam files
Black screen followed by UE Error 01 → Check memory/page file troubleshooting
I would follow that order instead of immediately reinstalling drivers, Windows, or the entire game. Each step targets a specific failure players are actually seeing with Ace Combat 8.
Move Ace Combat 8 From an HDD to an SSD
This is not just a general recommendation to improve loading times. Ace Combat 8 officially lists an SSD as part of its minimum PC requirements.
The minimum specifications call for 150 GB of available storage on an SSD alongside Windows 11, DirectX 12, Shader Model 6.6 support, and a hardware ray-tracing-capable GPU.
That matters because one of the clearest black-screen reports came from a player who had installed the game on an HDD. The game remained on a black screen for around 10 minutes on first launch, but after reinstalling it on an NVMe SSD, the player reported that it worked normally.
If your game is sitting on a mechanical hard drive, I would fix that before changing anything else.
Check This First
HDD → Not supported by the listed PC requirements
SATA SSD → Meets the SSD requirement
NVMe SSD → Also supported and preferable if available
You do not necessarily need to redownload the entire game. Steam can move installed games between library locations if you already have another Steam library set up on an SSD.
Reset GameUserSettings.ini
If you're already running Ace Combat 8 from an SSD, resetting the game's configuration file is the next fix I would test.
A player who was repeatedly failing to finish shader compilation eventually traced the problem to GameUserSettings.ini. After removing the file and letting Ace Combat 8 recreate its default settings, the game completed startup and reached the title screen.
The file is located here:
GameUserSettings.ini Location
C:\Users\YOURNAME\AppData\Local\BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment\ACE COMBAT 8\Saved\Config\Windows\
Close Ace Combat 8 completely, open that folder, and find GameUserSettings.ini.
Instead of permanently deleting it immediately, I would rename it to something like GameUserSettings.backup.ini. Then launch Ace Combat 8 again. The game should generate a fresh configuration file using its defaults.
This gives you the same troubleshooting effect while keeping the original file available in case you need it later.
Config Reset
1. Close Ace Combat 8
2. Open the Config\Windows folder
3. Find GameUserSettings.ini
4. Rename it to GameUserSettings.backup.ini
5. Launch Ace Combat 8 again
6. Let the game recreate its settings
Expect your graphics and other local settings to return to defaults afterward.
This fix is particularly worth trying if the black screen appeared after changing graphics settings or if the game repeatedly fails while compiling shaders.
Clear Your Shader Cache if the Black Screen Started After Graphics Changes
If Ace Combat 8 previously launched correctly and the black screen appeared after changing graphics settings, I would look at the shader cache before assuming the installation itself is broken.
There are current reports of the game crashing into a black screen after graphics changes and then refusing to start normally until the GPU shader cache is cleared.
AMD Software includes a Reset Shader Cache option specifically for deleting stored shader-cache files. After clearing it, launch Ace Combat 8 again and allow shaders to rebuild.
The first launch after clearing cached shaders may take longer than normal because the game needs to regenerate them.
I would also combine this with the GameUserSettings.ini reset if the problem appeared immediately after you changed several graphics options at once. That clears both sides of the equation: the saved graphics configuration and the cached shader data created from it.
Verify Ace Combat 8's Files on Steam
If the config reset does not work, verify the installation before doing a full reinstall.
In Steam:
Verify Ace Combat 8
Steam Library → Right-click ACE COMBAT 8 → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files
Steam will compare your local installation against the expected files and replace anything missing or corrupted.
This is especially worth doing if your Config folder is incomplete, the game never successfully finished its first launch, or the problem appeared after a crash or interrupted update.
Check Your GPU Driver, But Don't Blindly Update It
GPU drivers are another source of Ace Combat 8 launch problems, but I would not automatically assume that installing the newest possible driver is the answer.
Players are currently reporting black screens and crashes across different driver versions, and some systems have behaved better after switching away from a problematic version.
If Ace Combat 8 itself displays a warning recommending a particular AMD driver, pay attention to that recommendation. If the game broke immediately after a driver update, a clean reinstall or rollback is more useful to test than repeatedly reinstalling the exact same driver.
The better diagnostic question is: did the black screen begin when the driver changed?
If yes, test the game-supported or previously stable version. If no, I would exhaust the SSD, config, shader-cache, and file-verification fixes first.
Black Screen Followed by UE Error 01
If the black screen eventually turns into UE Live Error 01, an out-of-memory message, or a crash while Campaign content is loading, you may be dealing with the broader memory-related crash rather than a simple display problem.
Some Ace Combat 8 systems are consuming enough memory during loading that Windows virtual-memory configuration can become part of the problem, even on PCs with substantial physical RAM.
I cover that separately in my Ace Combat 8 Error 01 fix guide, including the page-file fix and the other crash patterns players are seeing.
I would keep the two problems separate: a permanent black screen from an HDD or bad graphics configuration is not automatically an out-of-memory crash just because both happen during startup.
Black Screen During a Mission or Cutscene Is a Different Problem
If Ace Combat 8 launches normally, reaches the menus, and lets you play several missions before suddenly showing a black screen, don't immediately troubleshoot it like a startup failure.
Players have also reported isolated black screens during mission transitions, briefings, loading screens, and cinematics. That points more toward a mission-specific loading or rendering failure than an inability to boot the game.
For this version of the issue, I would try restarting the mission first, then reset GameUserSettings.ini and verify the game files if the exact same transition continues failing.
If it only happened once and the mission works after restarting, I would not start rolling back drivers or reinstalling Windows over a single broken cinematic.
Check the Requirements Before Chasing Software Fixes
Ace Combat 8's minimum PC requirements are stricter than simply having a GPU that can technically run DirectX 12.
The game requires Windows 11, DirectX 12 with Shader Model 6.6 or newer, an SSD, and a hardware ray-tracing-capable graphics card. The listed minimum GPU level is an RTX 2060 6 GB or Radeon RX 6600 XT 8 GB.
If your hardware misses one of those requirements, configuration-file troubleshooting may not solve the underlying compatibility problem.
Minimum Launch Checks
Windows 11
16 GB RAM
DirectX 12
Shader Model 6.6 or newer
Hardware ray tracing support
SSD installation
150 GB available storage
The Order I Would Try These Fixes
The useful part is not having 15 different fixes. It's knowing which one to try first.
Ace Combat 8 Black Screen Fix Order
1. If installed on HDD → move to SSD
2. Reset GameUserSettings.ini
3. Clear the GPU shader cache
4. Verify Steam files
5. Check whether a recent GPU-driver change caused the problem
6. If Error 01 appears → troubleshoot page file/memory separately
7. Reinstall only after the targeted fixes fail
I would also avoid downloading random executables claiming to be an Ace Combat 8 crash or Error 01 patch. The fixes above use the game files, Steam, Windows, or your GPU software and do not require running an unknown third-party EXE.
If you do finally get into the Campaign and are still sorting out the flight setup, my Ace Combat 8 Standard vs Expert controls guide covers which flight-control mode to start with and what actually changes between them.
