Ace Combat 8 How to Beat Shadow 22

Shadow 22 turns the end of Mission 28 into one of Ace Combat 8's toughest dogfights. He can repeatedly shake missiles, throw himself into violent maneuvers, and waste a huge amount of your remaining mission time if you keep trying to fight him like a normal enemy Ace.

How to Beat Shadow 22 in Ace Combat 8

The most reliable way to beat Shadow 22 is to make your machine gun your primary damage source, stay close enough to punish his post-stall maneuvers, and save missiles for the short windows when he stops maneuvering and begins accelerating away.

Do not spend the entire fight firing missiles every time you get a lock. Shadow 22 and the other Shadows are extremely good at defeating missile attacks with flares and aggressive PSM-style maneuvers.

Best Shadow 22 Strategy
Use guns for consistent damage
Stay close enough to see his maneuver finish
Attack when he slows or levels out after a PSM
Use one missile to force a defensive reaction
Follow with a better missile or gun burst during recovery
Keep your wingmen attacking with special weapons

The useful way to think about this fight is that Shadow 22 is not simply a target with unusually strong missile evasion. He repeatedly creates his own vulnerability window every time he finishes one of those extreme turns.

Once you start watching for that cycle instead of constantly chasing the lock indicator, the fight becomes much more manageable.

The Best Time to Attack Shadow 22

Your best opportunity comes during and immediately after Shadow 22 performs one of his violent PSM-style flips.

During the maneuver, he can briefly dump a huge amount of speed and rotate aggressively. That makes missile tracking unreliable, but it can also leave his aircraft moving slowly enough for a good gun burst.

The even better opportunity is usually right after the maneuver.

Watch for Shadow 22 to finish rotating, level his aircraft, and begin accelerating away. For a short moment his flight path becomes far more predictable. That is when I would commit to the attack.

Attack Cycle
Shadow 22 begins PSM → stay with him without wasting missiles
Shadow 22 slows or rotates → use your gun if the angle is good
Shadow 22 finishes the maneuver → line up behind him
Shadow 22 accelerates away → fire or continue the gun burst

This is much more reliable than trying to force a missile hit while he is actively flipping around.

If you want to understand the same maneuver from the player's side, my Ace Combat 8 PSM guide covers how Post-Stall Maneuvers work and which aircraft can perform them.

Stop Treating Every Missile as a Kill Shot

One of the better ways to approach Shadow 22 is to use missiles as part of a sequence rather than expecting every launch to connect.

If Shadow 22 immediately reacts to a missile with flares or another defensive maneuver, that first missile has still accomplished something: it forced him to react.

Fire a standard missile to pressure him, stay on his flight path, then look for the moment he finishes the defensive maneuver. That second window is a much better place to use a stronger special weapon such as a QAAM or SASM.

Players have also reported what appears to be a short gap between his flare uses. I would not rely on a specific hidden cooldown, but the practical strategy is sound: force the defensive reaction first, then attack as he recovers instead of dumping everything simultaneously.

There are also reports that firing during his more extreme maneuvers can completely ruin missile tracking, so waiting an extra second is often more valuable than launching the instant the lock appears.

Why Guns Are So Good Against Shadow 22

Flares cannot stop bullets.

That sounds obvious, but it changes how you should approach the entire fight. Shadow 22's strongest defensive tools are built around making guided weapons unreliable. Your machine gun bypasses most of that problem.

You also do not need one long perfect burst. Small bursts every time he slows down add up quickly, especially if you stay close enough to capitalize on each maneuver.

The biggest mistake is waiting for the perfect tailing position. Shadow 22 may immediately break away again. Take the short gun opportunities he gives you instead.

If you struggle to keep the gun reticle on him, there is another useful setting to test: players have reported that switching the Gun Sight to Type B makes the sight feel less twitchy during this fight.

I would test both options rather than assuming Type B is automatically better for everyone, but it is worth changing if you normally have no trouble with guns and suddenly cannot keep the reticle stable against the Shadows.

Best Loadout for Shadow 22

There does not appear to be one mandatory aircraft for Shadow 22, which is actually useful information. Successful players report beating the fight with very different planes and weapon setups.

F-22A with QAAM, F-15C with SASM, Gripen setups, and FA-36 squadrons have all been reported as viable. That tells me the important choice is not chasing one supposedly mandatory aircraft. It is building around weapons that let you capitalize on Shadow 22's recovery windows.

If you're choosing specifically for this fight, I would favor:

Shadow 22 Loadout Priorities
Strong maneuverability for staying close
A gun setup you are comfortable aiming
QAAM or SASM if available
Missile guidance or power improvements
Gun improvements if you plan to lean heavily on bullets
ESM support from a wingman when available

If you're not sure which aircraft gives you the best platform for this kind of fight, my Ace Combat 8 best planes guide covers the strongest dogfighters and general-purpose aircraft.

Parts matter too, but I would not waste every slot trying to solve the same problem. Improve the weapons you are actually using, then spend the rest on handling or survivability. My Ace Combat 8 best parts guide breaks down the most valuable BODY, ARMS, and MISC upgrades.

Do Not Ignore Your Wingmen

Your squad does not need to carry the boss fight, but there is no reason to leave extra damage unused.

ESM support can improve the effectiveness of your own missile attacks, while offensive wingmen can still occasionally land special-weapon hits on the Shadows.

Make sure special weapons are authorized when the fight begins and keep issuing attack orders instead of leaving everyone passive.

This is especially useful because Shadow 22 forces you to spend so much attention on positioning. Even occasional damage from another aircraft shortens the amount of time you personally need to stay glued to him.

Common Mistakes Against Shadow 22

The biggest mistake is missile spam. More missiles do not solve a target that is actively defeating missile tracking.

A second mistake is trying to match every PSM with your own dramatic maneuver. You can do it, and players report that your own PSM can also break incoming missile tracking, but constantly throwing the aircraft around can make the fight more exhausting without actually producing damage.

Use advanced maneuvers when they solve a positioning or defensive problem. Do not turn the boss fight into a PSM contest.

Another mistake is burning through every useful special weapon before the Shadow phase. If you're carrying something particularly effective against agile aircraft, conserve enough ammunition to actually use it here.

Finally, do not keep firing while Shadow 22 is in the middle of the maneuver that keeps defeating your missiles. Stay with him and wait for the recovery. The opening is usually coming only a moment later.

If you're still getting used to the game's flight mechanics, my Ace Combat 8 tips and tricks covers wingman commands, aircraft setup, and other campaign systems that become much more important in later missions.

How to S-Rank the Shadow 22 Fight

If you're replaying Mission 28 for an S Rank, speed appears to matter heavily during the Shadow section.

One Ace-difficulty player reported getting an A Rank after spending longer fighting the Shadows despite destroying more enemies, then receiving an S Rank on a run where the Shadow squadron was eliminated much faster with fewer overall kills.

I would not treat any exact community-reported time as a confirmed cutoff, but the takeaway is useful: once the Shadows arrive, prioritize killing them quickly instead of stretching out the fight looking for additional score.

That makes your strategy slightly different from a normal clear. For an S-Rank attempt, you want to recognize the PSM recovery window immediately, deal damage, and end the encounter before the boss phase starts eating into your mission time.

If you're going through the higher difficulties for completion, my Ace Combat 8 Ace difficulty guide covers how Ace unlocks and what is required for the Ace of Aces trophy.

The Trick Is Waiting for Shadow 22 to Give You the Shot

Shadow 22 feels much worse if you spend the entire fight trying to force guided missiles through his defensive maneuvers.

Instead, let him perform the move. Stay close, keep your nose pointed toward where he is going to exit, and punish the moment his aircraft has to recover.

In Short
Use guns as your reliable damage source
Do not waste missiles during his PSM
Punish the brief recovery after he finishes the maneuver
Use missiles to force flares, then follow up
Bring QAAM or SASM if your aircraft supports them
Use ESM and authorize wingman special weapons
For an S Rank, end the Shadow fight as quickly as possible
