If you are tracking every boss for a complete run, count the repeated characters separately. Death, Joan, Isaac, and Dracula each account for more than one entry in the overall sequence.
Why Does Death Appear Twice in the Boss Order?
Death appears twice because the first encounter in the Catacombs is not the normal Death boss fight.
During that early encounter, Rose is heavily outmatched and the game expects her to lose. Death can reduce almost all of her health with a single attack before finishing the encounter, after which the story continues normally.
You therefore do not need to stop progressing, grind levels, or assume you missed an upgrade if Death defeats you in the Catacombs.
The second Death entry later in the boss order is the actual fight you are expected to win.
Which Bosses Have Rematches?
Several names appear more than once in the complete boss order, but they represent separate encounters rather than duplicate listings.
Joan first appears as the second boss and returns for another encounter later in the game at number 13. Isaac is fought earlier in the Main Hall at number five and then appears again at number 15.
Dracula also occupies the final two entries because his normal fight and Beast Form are counted separately.
Brauner is the unusual entry in the list. His encounter does not become a conventional boss battle, but he is still part of the complete boss sequence and progression.
Do You Need Every Boss for the True Ending?
Some bosses in Castlevania Belmont's Curse are optional during normal progression, but a complete route toward the true ending requires finding and fighting all of them.
That makes the 17-boss sequence above the better checklist if you are aiming for full completion rather than simply reaching the end of the main path.
The easiest entries to miscount are the early Death encounter, Brauner, the Joan and Isaac rematches, and Dracula's separate Beast Form. If your total looks short, check those encounters first before assuming you skipped an entirely different boss.
