Castlevania Belmont's Curse How to Break Yellow Blocks

Yellow or gold-cracked blocks in Castlevania Belmont's Curse are tied to the Smash traversal ability, but not every one breaks under the same conditions. Most can be destroyed with a normal downward Smash once the ability is unlocked, while reinforced floors require more falling distance and one early Clock Tower obstacle uses a completely different solution.

How to Break Yellow Blocks in Castlevania Belmont's Curse

To break yellow blocks in Castlevania Belmont's Curse, unlock Smash, jump above a block marked with golden cracks, and press Down + Jump while Rose is airborne. Rose will dive straight downward and break the block when she lands on it.

PlayStation: Down + Cross while airborne
Keyboard: S + Space while airborne
Requirement: Smash
Target: Blocks and floors marked with golden cracks

You need to be directly over the destructible surface when you use Smash. Pressing the input while standing on the ground will not trigger the move, and landing beside the cracked section will not break it.

Normal attacks, the Arcane Whip, and other weapons are not substitutes for Smash. If the surface has the distinctive yellow or golden cracks, treat it as a traversal obstacle rather than a durability check.

How to Unlock Smash

Smash is obtained during the Clock Tower portion of Castlevania Belmont's Curse after defeating Talos, also associated with The Builder.

Continue through the sequence after the encounter until the Smash tutorial appears. The game then adds Smash to Rose's movement abilities and gives you an immediate opportunity to use the downward attack on a cracked floor.

This also prevents an easy mix-up with the similarly named rewards around The Builder. The Fist of Talos spell is not what breaks these traversal blocks. You need Rose's actual Smash movement ability.

If Down + Jump does nothing: Make sure you have progressed through The Builder encounter and completed the Smash tutorial. The movement ability, Fist of Talos spell, and Fists of Talos weapon are separate things.

Why a Yellow Block Won't Break

If Rose performs Smash correctly but the floor survives, the problem may be your starting height rather than the input.

Some reinforced golden-cracked floors require a stronger Smash. The force of the move increases when Rose falls farther before impact, so a short jump directly above the block may not be enough.

Look for a higher platform, ledge, or opening above the floor. Jump from there, line Rose up with the cracked section, and use Down + Jump during the fall. The extra vertical distance produces the harder impact needed to destroy reinforced floors.

This creates a useful way to diagnose almost every yellow-block problem:

  • If Rose does not dive downward, you either do not have Smash yet or are using the input incorrectly.
  • If Rose Smashes but misses, reposition directly above the cracked surface.
  • If Rose hits the block but it survives, find a higher starting point.
  • If you are in the Eastern Access Shaft before fighting The Builder, use the area's mechanism instead.

How to Break the Clock Tower Yellow Block Before Smash

The yellow-cracked floor in the Eastern Access Shaft is the major exception because you encounter it before Rose has Smash. You are not supposed to break this one herself.

Climb the Eastern Access Shaft and activate the mechanisms that reposition the platforms around the suspended mechanical hand. Rotate the obstructing platforms so they no longer block its descent, then trigger the mechanism in the center of the shaft.

The mechanical hand drops through the golden-cracked floor and opens the route into Foundry Apex, allowing you to continue toward The Builder and eventually unlock Smash for yourself.

If you are repeatedly jumping on this particular floor or attacking it with weapons, stop looking for a combat solution. The block is part of the Clock Tower machinery puzzle and exists specifically before the movement ability becomes available.

Where to Use Smash Next

Once Smash is unlocked, it is worth revisiting earlier regions where you passed golden-cracked floors. These barriers frequently conceal alternate routes, collectibles, treasure, stat upgrades, and other optional areas that were deliberately inaccessible on your first visit.

Smash also matters for later story progression. In the Main Hall, it is involved in The Artist progression that eventually contributes to opening the route toward Notre Dame.

That becomes particularly important if you are working toward Rose's final major traversal upgrade. Our Castlevania Belmont's Curse How to Get Double Jump guide covers the later progression chain through The Artist, Brauner's Paintbrush, Notre Dame, and Death.

The main rule to remember is that the cracks tell you what kind of obstacle you are dealing with, while the surrounding geometry tells you how to break it. A normal golden-cracked block needs Smash, a reinforced one needs Smash from greater height, and the pre-Smash Clock Tower floor needs the suspended mechanical hand instead.
