Halloween The Game What Does the Hourglass Do?

The Hourglass in Halloween The Game has two useful purposes: it can help you locate nearby escape items while you carry it, and you can throw it at Michael Myers to temporarily disrupt him. That makes it more useful than it first looks, especially if you save it until Michael is about to interrupt an escape rather than throwing it the first time you see him.

The Hourglass Has Two Different Uses

The first reason to carry the Hourglass is utility. Current testing reports that having it in your inventory reveals escape-related items within roughly 10 meters, potentially helping you find the components needed to get out of Haddonfield.

The second use is much more direct: throw the Hourglass at Michael. On impact it creates a disruptive effect that gives you a brief window to get away or finish whatever you were doing.

There is some disagreement in current testing over exactly how that Michael effect should be described. It has been reported as slowing him through a fog-like effect, while other testing describes the impact as temporarily blinding him. Either way, the practical result is the same one I would plan around: a successful throw buys you a short opening against Michael rather than dealing with him permanently.

The Hourglass Can Help Find Nearby Escape Items

One of the more interesting uses of the Hourglass has nothing to do with throwing it. While you are carrying it, escape items within approximately 10 meters are reported to become detectable.

That can make the Hourglass particularly useful earlier in a match, when you have found an exit or started committing to an escape but are still missing one of its components.

I would take advantage of that utility before sacrificing the item against Michael whenever possible. If the Hourglass can help you locate something your team actually needs, carrying it for another minute may accomplish more than immediately using it as a one-time defensive throw.

If you are trying to figure out what those items are actually for, my Halloween The Game escape guide covers the requirements for the Storm Cellar, Gate, Car, Police Car, and Police Wagon routes.

How to Throw the Hourglass at Michael Myers

When Michael is close enough to threaten you, aim the Hourglass at him and throw it like another throwable item.

You need the throw to connect near or on Michael to get the useful disruption. Once used this way, treat the Hourglass as spent rather than something you can repeatedly throw throughout the match.

The Hour glass is therefore not something I would waste just because Michael briefly appears in the distance. Its value is much higher when he has already committed to stopping you, chasing a teammate, or interrupting an objective where a few extra seconds actually matter.

Save the Hourglass for the Moment an Escape Is About to Fail

My favorite use for the Hourglass would be near the end of an escape setup.

If your team is seconds away from finishing a hatch, getting a vehicle out, reviving someone, or completing another vulnerable interaction, throwing the Hourglass at an approaching Michael can create the opening needed to finish.

That is much more valuable than using it during an ordinary encounter in the middle of the map. You are consuming a rare item either way, so I want the throw to protect actual progress rather than merely save a few seconds of running.

This is also where the Hourglass differs from the Brass Lantern. The Lantern is better suited to ongoing positional protection around Shape Jump, while the Hourglass gives you one deliberate disruption at the moment you choose.

The Hourglass Does Not Appear to Change the Match Timer

Despite the obvious time-related theme of an Hourglass, there is no current evidence that it lets you add time, pause the match timer, rewind anything, or otherwise manipulate the length of the game.

Testing has specifically looked for interactions with the match timer and has not found one. There have also been suggestions that hitting Michael could interfere with ability cooldowns, but that behavior has not been confirmed clearly enough for me to recommend planning around it.

For now, I would keep the Hourglass simple: carry it while searching for nearby escape items, then turn it into a one-use disruption against Michael when your team reaches a moment worth protecting. That gives you value from both sides of the item instead of throwing away its utility the instant Michael shows up.
