WoW Forever How to Fish
Fishing works a little differently in WoW Forever than returning Classic players may expect because the Fishing ability is handled through the Professions menu rather than your normal spellbook. Once you learn the profession, all you need is a Fishing Pole, a body of water, and the Fishing ability on your action bar to start making catches.

How to Fish in WoW Forever
To fish in WoW Forever, learn Fishing from a trainer, buy and equip a Fishing Pole, open the Professions menu and drag the Fishing ability onto your action bar. Stand facing a lake, river, pond, or coastline and use Fishing to cast your bobber into the water.
Wait until the bobber splashes, then right-click the bobber before the catch window ends. If you react in time and your effective Fishing skill is high enough for that water, you will catch the fish.
1. Learn Fishing from a Fishing trainer.
2. Buy and equip a Fishing Pole.
3. Open Professions and drag Fishing to your action bar.
4. Face a body of water and cast.
5. Wait for the bobber to splash.
6. Right-click the bobber to catch the fish.
You do not need to target a fish or manually aim at anything beneath the water. The important interaction is the bobber itself after it splashes.
How to Learn Fishing
Fishing is a secondary profession in WoW Forever, so learning it does not consume either of your primary profession slots. Apprentice Fishing has no character-level requirement, which means you can pick it up almost immediately on a new character.
Fishing trainers are available in the capital cities as well as near the starting areas for every race. If you are already in a capital, asking a guard for the Fishing trainer is usually the quickest way to have the location marked for you.
New characters can also learn near their starting zone. Humans can find Lee Brown around Crystal Lake in Elwynn Forest, Orcs and Trolls can use Lau'Tiki at Sen'jin Village, Tauren can visit Uthan Stillwater at Stonebull Lake, while Dwarves and Gnomes can learn from Paxton Ganter in Dun Morogh.
Night Elves can use Androl Oakhand in Rut'theran Village, Undead can find Clyde Kellen near Brightwater Lake, and Skyborne have trainers available around their starting settlements on Zephras Isle.
Where Is the Fishing Spell in WoW Forever?
If you learned Fishing but cannot find the ability, do not look through the normal spellbook. WoW Forever puts Fishing inside the Professions interface.
Open the Professions menu using the profession button along the bottom interface, select Fishing, then drag the Fishing ability from that panel onto an action bar slot.
Binding it to an easy key is worth doing if you plan to fish for more than a few minutes. Once Fishing is on your bar, the entire loop can be repeated without reopening the Professions window after every catch.
Where to Get a Fishing Pole
You need a Fishing Pole equipped before you can cast. Basic Fishing Poles are sold by Fishing Supplies vendors and many Trade Supplies vendors for only a small amount of copper.
The basic pole is enough to begin. Better poles later provide bonus Fishing skill, which becomes more useful when moving into water where your natural skill is below the zone's requirement.
A Strong Fishing Pole, for example, adds Fishing skill and is easy to buy once you meet its requirement. More advanced poles can provide substantially larger bonuses, but there is no reason to delay learning the profession because you do not have one yet.
Best Place to Start Fishing
Start in an actual starting zone rather than immediately fishing inside a capital city.
Starter-zone water has a much lower Fishing requirement. With a Shiny Bauble applied to your pole, you can reach a reliable catch rate immediately at Fishing skill 1. Once your natural Fishing reaches 25, starter-zone water no longer requires the lure for a full catch rate.
Capital cities are less forgiving at the beginning. You can still cast there, but more catches may escape until your Fishing skill rises. By around Fishing 75, capital-city water becomes a much better place to continue.
This makes the fastest first-session setup simple: learn Fishing near your racial starting area, buy the pole and a few Shiny Baubles from a nearby supply vendor, then fish the closest starter-zone water instead of traveling somewhere supposedly more valuable.
Why Does It Say Your Fish Got Away?
If you are clicking the bobber correctly but see "Your fish got away!", your Fishing skill is too low for that body of water.
Different areas have different effective Fishing requirements. Being below the ideal skill does not always prevent you from casting, but it increases the chance that a successful bite escapes when you click the bobber.
There are three practical ways to solve this: return to easier water, raise your natural Fishing skill, or temporarily increase your effective skill with a lure or upgraded Fishing Pole.
The zone itself does not make your Fishing skill rise faster. Skill progression depends on successful catches rather than fishing in the hardest water available, so repeatedly losing fish in a high-level zone usually slows your progress instead of accelerating it.
Bobber never splashes: Wait for the bite before clicking.
Fish got away: Your effective Fishing skill is too low.
Cannot cast: Equip a Fishing Pole and face valid water.
Fishing ability missing: Check the Professions menu, not the spellbook.
How Fishing Lures Work
Lures temporarily increase your effective Fishing skill. Equip your Fishing Pole first, then use the lure to apply its bonus to the pole.
The early Shiny Bauble adds 25 Fishing skill and is enough to make starting-zone Fishing reliable from the moment you learn the profession. Higher-level options include Nightcrawlers at +50, Bright Baubles at +75, and the Aquadynamic Fish Attractor at +100.
You do not need to keep a lure active simply because you are fishing. Use one when your natural skill is not high enough for the water you want to fish in. Once your Fishing skill reaches the area's reliable catch threshold, the lure is providing little practical value there.
WoW Forever also has other ways to raise effective Fishing skill later, including better poles, Fishing equipment, enchants, food, and Legacy perks. Those become more relevant once you start targeting higher-level waters rather than simply trying to learn how Fishing works.
How Fishing Schools Work
You can cast into ordinary water almost anywhere, but specific fish can also be targeted through Fishing Schools such as Oily Blackmouth Schools or Schools of Deviate Fish.
To fish a school, your bobber needs to actually land inside the visible pool. Casting nearby is not enough. If it lands outside, you are fishing the surrounding zone's normal loot table instead.
Schools only contain a limited number of catches before disappearing, and different school types appear in different zones. That makes them more useful once you are deliberately farming a certain fish rather than simply raising Fishing skill.
Fishing also pairs naturally with Cooking in WoW Forever because many of the fish you catch can be turned into food, and Forever has expanded the usefulness of several cooked-food bonuses. Fishing remains a secondary profession, so taking it does not affect whichever primary professions you choose.
Your race does not directly improve Fishing either, so you do not need to build a character around the profession. If you are still deciding what to play for the rest of the game, our WoW Forever Best Race for Each Class guide covers the racial choices that matter for actual class performance.
For simply getting started, keep the process narrow: learn Fishing, equip a pole, put Fishing on your action bar, use a Shiny Bauble in low-skill water, and click the bobber when it splashes. Once that loop works, everything else in the profession is just improving what and where you can catch.
