Building roads in Civ 7 get your units where they need to be without spending five turns crawling through forests like lost tourists. Here’s everything you need to know about roads and railroads in Civilization VII and how they work.

How to Build Roads

Option 1: Let Settlements Do It for You

The easiest way to get roads? Just build more cities.

  1. Found a new settlement up to 5 tiles away from an existing city.

  2. Roads will automatically form between the two, as long as there’s no pesky mountain, river, or independent settlement in the way.

Key Tip:

  • If the city is too far away (10+ tiles), no road will appear. Your settlers will just have to suffer through the wilderness, so be sure they’re less than 10 tiles away.

Option 2: Use Trade Routes

For those who prefer diplomacy over expansion (or just want to make some extra gold), trade routes are your best bet.

  1. Send a merchant to a foreign city or one of your own settlements.

  2. Trade routes automatically create roads between the two locations.

  3. Profit. Literally.

Important Note:

  • You must be within trade range—otherwise, your merchant will just sit there looking confused.

How to Build Railroads

Ah, the Modern Age—where roads become so last century and railroads take over. These aren’t just fancy roads; they allow your units to move even faster without eating up precious turns.

How Railroads Work:

  • Automatically replace roads in the Modern Era when advanced infrastructure techs are unlocked.

  • Provide fast travel for units—because nothing says world domination like an efficient rail system.

Last Notes:

  • Early Game: Expand wisely to get free roads.

  • Mid-Game: Trade routes will help connect cities and boost economy.

  • Late Game: Railroads will speed up movement (and your inevitable world conquest).

With these tips, you’ll have a well-connected empire before you can say, "One more turn." Now go forth and pave the way—literally.
