OSRS Sailing Logging Out on Boat | What Happens

Logging out while sailing can act a little weird right now, especially if you docked at a mooring point instead of a port. Here’s exactly how it works and what happens to you and your ship when you log off at sea.
What Happens When You Log Out at Sea
Your logout location depends on where you last docked. If your ship’s most recent dock was at a Port, logging out at sea will keep you on your boat. When you log back in, you’ll appear right where you left off, still aboard and ready to sail.
If your last dock was at a Mooring Point, it’s different. Logging out will send your player back to the last Port you docked at with any ship, but your current ship will stay behind at the last Mooring Point you used with that specific vessel. Basically, you and your ship get separated.
Why This Happens
Jagex confirmed this behavior is intentional for now but may be updated later. The game treats ports and mooring points as different types of save locations. Ports are treated as “main docks,” while mooring points function more like temporary anchor spots tied only to that specific boat.
Buoys make it even weirder. They seem to save your ship’s position automatically, so sometimes your ship will remain linked to the buoy even if you didn’t officially dock. This can cause your player and ship to appear in different spots after logging back in.
How to Avoid Losing Your Ship
If you want to stay on your boat after logging out, always make sure your last dock was at a Port buoy, not a mooring point. Before logging out, do a quick port dock, then sail out again if you need to. This guarantees your character and your ship will stay synced.
If your ship gets stuck at a mooring point or distant island, visit a Shipwright at any main port. They can recover your ship, but you’ll lose any cargo that was stored onboard.
Common Player Issues
Logging out after docking at a mooring point sends your character to port
Cargo left in your ship may be lost if it gets teleported or recovered
Logging out mid-salvage can leave your salvage loot stranded
Players disembarking at mooring points without docking often trigger this bug
Forgetting Burbs can’t be left in the cargo hold
Until it’s fixed, most sailors are avoiding logging out anywhere near mooring points or minor islands.
Final Blurb
If you plan to take a break, always dock at a main port before logging out. Mooring points are still a bit unstable, and getting your ship stranded or cargo wiped can be a pain. Stick to ports for safety, and you’ll always respawn where you left off, cargo intact and sails ready.
FAQ
Why do I appear at a port instead of my boat
Because your ship’s last dock was at a mooring point, not a port.
Can I recover my stuck ship
Yes, talk to a Shipwright at a main port, but you’ll lose cargo in the process.
What happens to my cargo if my ship moves
It stays with the ship, but teleporting or recovering can delete it.
Are buoys safe to dock at
Buoys sometimes cause weird saves. For now, ports are safest.
Will Jagex fix this behavior
They’ve said they’re looking into improving it, but no timeline yet.
