Solarpunk: How To Get Wheat
To get Wheat in Solarpunk, you need to upgrade your airship to Level 2, then fly to the newly reachable islands where Wheat and Wheat Seeds can be found. Wheat is not on the starting island, so you cannot farm it properly until you push through TraderBot progression, unlock the Level 2 Airship Research Upgrade, and expand your airship travel range.

How To Get Wheat In Solarpunk
Wheat is found on islands you can reach after upgrading your airship to Level 2. The starting island does not have Wheat, so if you are searching your first island over and over, stop. You need airship progression first.
Once the Level 2 airship upgrade is active, fly to the new islands that become reachable. The northeast island cluster is one of the first useful places to check because it has Wheat nodes and Wheat Seeds. Grab every Wheat node you find, and keep the seeds because they are the beginning of your long-term Wheat supply.
Wheat looks like a simple crop at first, but it becomes one of the more annoying progression resources if you spend it carelessly. You need it for TraderBot trades, Bread, Animal Feed, and eventually your animal farm. The mistake is treating the first few Wheat pickups like spare food. They are not spare. They are the start of a bottleneck.
Upgrade Your Airship First
You need the Level 2 airship upgrade before you can reliably get Wheat. The upgrade comes from TraderBot progression, and it expands the travel radius shown on your map so you can reach farther islands.
To unlock the Level 2 Airship Research Upgrade, complete the early TraderBot trades ending with the 32x Copper trade. After that, return to your Dock and confirm the upgrade so the new airship range actually applies.
| TraderBot Step | Required Trade | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 4x Watermelon | Starts the early TraderBot progression chain. |
| 2 | 12x Cotton | Pushes toward the first major travel upgrade. |
| 3 | 20x Beeswax | Continues the early trade requirements. |
| 4 | 10x Watermelon | Sets up the Copper trade. |
| 5 | 32x Copper | Unlocks the Level 2 Airship Research Upgrade. |
If you have not done this yet, follow the Solarpunk airship upgrade guide first. Wheat is locked behind that travel upgrade, so the airship step is not optional.
Where To Find Wheat
After upgrading the airship to Level 2, check the newly reachable islands to the northeast and nearby expanded routes. The northeast island cluster should have a few Wheat nodes, and harvesting them should also give Wheat Seeds.
The first Wheat supply is small. Do not expect to fill an entire farm from the first trip. You might only find a few Wheat nodes at first, which is enough to start progression but not enough to support animals forever.
While you are already on the new islands, grab Quartz too. Quartz can be processed into Silicon with the Furnace, and Silicon becomes important for later energy buildings and tier 2 progression. A good Solarpunk trip usually solves more than one problem.
| Resource | Where It Comes From | Why To Grab It |
|---|---|---|
| Wheat | New islands after Level 2 airship upgrade | Needed for trades, Bread, Animal Feed, and farming progression. |
| Wheat Seeds | Harvesting Wheat nodes | Needed to start growing more Wheat. |
| Quartz | Newly reachable islands | Can be processed into Silicon in the Furnace. |
| Silicon | Made from Quartz | Used for useful energy buildings and later progression. |
What Wheat Is Used For
Wheat is used for TraderBot trades, Bread, Animal Feed, and animal farm progression. That is why it becomes more important than it looks when you first find it.
The problem is that several systems start asking for Wheat around the same time. TraderBot wants Wheat. Bread needs Wheat. Chickens need Animal Feed. Animal Feed uses Wheat. If you try to feed animals too early, you can slow down the trades that unlock better progression.
| Use | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| TraderBot trades | Needed to push progression forward. |
| Bread | Needed for a later TraderBot trade. |
| Animal Feed | Needed to feed chickens and work toward Eggs. |
| Seed production later | Needed to make Wheat sustainable once Seedspack is unlocked. |
Do Not Waste Wheat Early
The biggest Wheat mistake in Solarpunk is feeding chickens too early. Save your early Wheat for TraderBot trades and Bread before trying to maintain a full animal farm.
When you unlock Animal Basics and tame your first chicken, it is tempting to start feeding immediately. The problem is that chickens can eat through Animal Feed quickly, and if their hunger does not reach the needed level, you may not get Eggs anyway. That turns your early Wheat into wasted feed.
Early Wheat should go toward progression first. Complete the 10x Wheat trade, then prepare for the 10x Bread trade. After those are handled, you can start thinking more seriously about Animal Feed and Eggs.
How To Make Bread With Wheat
To make Bread in Solarpunk, turn 3x Wheat into Dough at the workbench, then put the Dough into the Furnace to make Bread. Since one Bread needs 3x Wheat, the 10x Bread trade needs at least 30x Wheat total.
| Item | Recipe Step | Amount Needed For 10x Bread |
|---|---|---|
| Dough | Made at the workbench with 3x Wheat | 30x Wheat total |
| Bread | Made by processing Dough in the Furnace | 10x Bread for the trade |
This can take several in-game days because the first Wheat supply is limited. That is another reason not to burn early Wheat on Animal Feed before the Bread trade is finished.
When To Use Wheat For Animal Feed
Use Wheat for Animal Feed after the key TraderBot Wheat and Bread trades are handled, or once you have enough Wheat stockpiled that feeding animals will not block progression. A safe starting point is to stockpile around 12 to 14 Wheat before feeding one chicken.
If you have two chickens, stockpile more Wheat first or consider focusing on one chicken until you have enough Eggs. The goal is not just to feed animals randomly. The goal is to feed them enough to satisfy their needs and get useful products back.
Eggs matter because you need 6x Eggs for the Level 3 airship upgrade from TraderBot. That upgrade unlocks more islands, which then helps you find more resources and keep progression moving.
| Animal Step | Best Approach |
|---|---|
| Unlock Animal Basics | Tame a chicken, but do not waste all Wheat immediately. |
| Before feeding | Finish key Wheat and Bread trades first. |
| Starting Animal Feed | Stockpile around 12 to 14 Wheat for one chicken. |
| Egg goal | Collect 6x Eggs for the Level 3 airship upgrade. |
How To Sustain Wheat
To sustain Wheat long-term, progress until you reach tier 6 at the Research Table and unlock the Seedspack. Seedspack lets you turn produce into seeds, which finally makes Wheat farming reliable instead of limited by whatever seeds you found while exploring.
The Seedspack requires 1x Raspberry, 1x Cotton, 1x Wheat, 1x Carrot, and 1x Sunflower. Carrot and Sunflower are found on islands unlocked after reaching Level 3 with your airship, so this is not an immediate early-game solution.
| Seedspack Requirement | Amount |
|---|---|
| Raspberry | 1 |
| Cotton | 1 |
| Wheat | 1 |
| Carrot | 1 |
| Sunflower | 1 |
Once Seedspack is unlocked, focus on multiplying Wheat Seeds first. That is the point where Wheat stops being a fragile progression bottleneck and starts becoming a real farm resource.
Final Blurb
Wheat in Solarpunk is found after upgrading your airship to Level 2 and exploring the newly reachable islands. The starting island does not have Wheat, so airship progression is the real first step.
Once you find Wheat, do not waste it. Save early Wheat for TraderBot trades and Bread before dumping it into Animal Feed. After you unlock Seedspack, you can finally multiply Wheat Seeds and build a sustainable animal farm without every chicken feeling like a tiny grain tax collector.
