Solarpunk: How To Upgrade Your Airship

Solarpunk: How To Upgrade Your Airship

To upgrade your airship in Solarpunk, progress through TraderBot trades until you unlock an airship upgrade, then return to your Dock and confirm the upgrade there. Airship upgrades expand the travel radius shown on your map, letting you reach farther floating islands with new resources like Quartz, Wheat, and later biome progression materials.

How To Upgrade Your Airship In Solarpunk

Airship upgrades in Solarpunk come from TraderBot progression. You trade resources to TraderBot, unlock the airship upgrade research, then go back to your Dock and apply the upgrade. Once the upgrade is confirmed at the Dock, your airship travel radius expands on the map.

This is the part that is easy to miss. The upgrade is not just about owning the right materials or building a new airship part from the normal crafting menu. TraderBot unlocks the upgrade, but the Dock is where you actually confirm it for your airship.

If your airship cannot reach certain islands yet, check the map. The visible travel circle shows how far your airship can currently go. If you try to fly outside that range, strong winds push you back, which means you need another airship upgrade before exploring farther.

How To Get The Level 2 Airship Upgrade

To get the Level 2 Airship Upgrade in Solarpunk, complete the early TraderBot trades until you reach the 32x Copper trade. That trade unlocks the Level 2 Airship Research Upgrade, which can then be confirmed at your Dock.

TraderBot Step Required Trade Progression
1 4x Watermelon Starts the early TraderBot chain.
2 12x Cotton Continues early blueprint progression.
3 20x Beeswax Pushes further into TraderBot unlocks.
4 10x Watermelon Prepares the next major upgrade trade.
5 32x Copper Unlocks the Level 2 Airship Research Upgrade.

After the 32x Copper trade unlocks the upgrade, do not just fly away expecting the range to change automatically. Go to the Dock and confirm the upgrade there.

Confirm The Upgrade At The Dock

After unlocking an airship upgrade from TraderBot, return to your Dock and confirm the upgrade. This applies the upgrade to your airship and expands the travel radius shown on the map.

The Dock step matters because TraderBot gives access to the upgrade, but the Dock applies it. If your map radius has not changed yet, you probably still need to confirm the upgrade at the Dock.

Once the upgrade is active, open the map and look at the larger travel circle. That new radius shows which islands are now reachable by airship.

What Airship Upgrades Do

Airship upgrades increase how far your airship can travel from your base. They do not just make exploration more convenient; they unlock access to new islands, new resources, and later progression steps.

Upgrade Effect Why It Matters
Expands travel radius Lets you fly to islands that were previously out of range.
Unlocks new resources New islands contain materials needed for crafting and upgrades.
Pushes TraderBot progression More distant resources are needed for later trades.
Opens new biomes later Later upgrades eventually push exploration into farther biome areas.

If strong winds force the airship back, that is the game telling you the island is outside your current travel range. Upgrade the airship instead of fighting the wind. The wind wins that argument.

How TraderBot Progression Works

TraderBot is one of the main progression gates in Solarpunk. It trades resources for special blueprints and upgrades, including airship upgrades, automation items, energy systems, drones, sprinklers, mining drills, and other important unlocks.

The useful part is that TraderBot shows future resource requirements, so you can plan ahead. If an upcoming trade needs a crop, ore, or animal product, start preparing that resource before you need it.

Airship upgrades are part of that same loop. You gather resources, trade with TraderBot, unlock a farther travel radius, explore new islands, then bring back new materials for the next round of crafting and upgrades.

New Islands And Resources After Upgrading

The Level 2 Airship Upgrade opens farther islands to the northeast and northwest. These new islands are important because they can contain Quartz, Wheat, and other resources that are not available on the starting island.

Quartz is especially important because it can be processed into Silicon with the Furnace. Silicon is used for useful energy buildings and tier 2 progression, so bring back more Quartz than you think you need.

Resource Where It Fits
Quartz Found on newly reachable islands after the Level 2 airship upgrade.
Silicon Made by processing Quartz in the Furnace.
Wheat Not found on the starting island, so exploration is required.
Later biome resources Unlocked through continued airship and TraderBot progression.

There is also an infinite Quartz mine node on a small island cluster northwest of the starting base after the Level 2 upgrade. That makes the northwest route especially useful once the travel radius expands.

Wheat is one of the first major resources unlocked through airship range progression, and the Solarpunk Wheat guide explains where to find it and why you should not waste it on Animal Feed too early.

Airship Upgrade Tips

The best airship upgrade tip is to treat TraderBot requirements as your real to-do list. If TraderBot needs crops, ores, or animal products, start producing them before you are completely blocked.

Tip Why It Helps
Check TraderBot requirements early You can prepare future trades instead of getting stuck later.
Farm Watermelon and Cotton ahead of time Both are needed for early TraderBot progression.
Stockpile Copper 32x Copper is needed for the Level 2 Airship Research Upgrade.
Return to the Dock after unlocking upgrades The Dock is where the airship upgrade is applied.
Use the map travel circle It shows which islands your airship can actually reach.
Bring extra supplies when exploring Farther islands are easier when water and food are handled first.

Before pushing far from your base, make sure water, food, and storage are stable. If you are still figuring out the early game, the Solarpunk beginner guide covers the best first steps before long airship trips.

If you still need the 32x Copper trade for the Level 2 upgrade, the Solarpunk Copper guide explains where to find Copper Ore and how to smelt it into Copper.

Final Blurb

To upgrade your airship in Solarpunk, follow TraderBot progression, unlock the airship upgrade research, then confirm the upgrade at your Dock. The Level 2 Airship Upgrade comes from the early TraderBot trade chain and unlocks after the 32x Copper trade.

Once upgraded, your airship can travel farther, reach new islands, and gather resources like Quartz and Wheat. That is the real exploration loop in Solarpunk: build the base, trade with TraderBot, upgrade the airship, then fly farther into the sky.
