Solarpunk: How To Get Copper
To get Copper in Solarpunk, build your Dock, use the airship to fly to the small island north of your starting base, and mine the Copper Ore node there with a Pickaxe. The island also has Watermelon spawns, making it one of the first important off-island resource trips. After collecting Copper Ore, return to your base and smelt it in the Furnace to make Copper.

How To Get Copper In Solarpunk
Copper is found on a small island north of your starting island. You need a Dock and airship before you can reach it, but you do not need to unlock the map first because the island is close enough to see from the edge of your starting base.
Once you reach the island, mine the Copper Ore node with a Pickaxe, then bring the ore back to your base. Copper Ore is not the finished material. To make usable Copper, place the Copper Ore in the Furnace with fuel and wait for it to smelt.
This is one of the first resource farms that can feel a little tedious, mostly because Pickaxes break quickly if you are trying to gather a full stack. Go prepared or you will end up stranded on the island, angrily staring at a Copper node with no working tool.
Where To Find Copper Ore
Copper Ore is found on the small island directly north of your starting base. After building your Dock and airship, fly north and look for the island with Watermelon spawns and a Copper Ore node.
The island has a few larger Copper Ore chunks that give some ore quickly, but the main source is the Copper Ore node in the ground. That ground node can be mined repeatedly, making it the real reason to visit the island.
This island is also useful because it has three Watermelon spawns. Watermelon is needed for early TraderBot progression, so grab the Watermelon while you are already there. Copper and Watermelon together make this island one of the first trips that actually pushes your progression forward.
| Resource | Where To Find It | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Copper Ore | Small island north of the starting base | Smelted into Copper for crafting and upgrades. |
| Watermelon | Same northern island | Needed for early TraderBot trades. |
| Stone, Sticks, and Wood | Available around the island | Useful for making replacement Pickaxes. |
What To Bring Before Farming Copper
Bring a Pickaxe, extra Stones, extra Sticks, and some Wood before farming Copper. Copper mining can break several Pickaxes, especially if you are trying to collect a large stack of ore in one trip.
You can find some Stones, Sticks, and trees on the Copper island, but it is still smarter to arrive prepared. If your Pickaxe breaks and you do not have the materials to craft another one, the trip becomes a waste of time.
| Item | Why To Bring It |
|---|---|
| Pickaxe | Needed to mine Copper Ore. |
| Extra Stones | Used to craft replacement Pickaxes. |
| Extra Sticks | Used to craft replacement Pickaxes. |
| Wood | Useful for extra crafting and Furnace fuel later. |
| Food and water | Helps if you stay longer than expected. |
If you are still setting up the basics, the Solarpunk beginner guide covers early water, food, farming, and base setup before longer resource trips.
How To Mine Copper Ore
To mine Copper Ore, equip your Pickaxe and hit the Copper Ore chunks or Copper Ore node. The large chunks give some Copper Ore upfront, while the ground node is the better repeatable source.
The ground node takes several swings for each Copper Ore, so expect tool durability to become the annoying part of the farm. If you want a full stack, bring enough materials to replace broken Pickaxes or gather more Stone, Sticks, and Wood on the island.
Do not leave after mining only the visible chunks unless you only need a small amount. The ground node is where most of the Copper farming comes from, so keep mining it if your goal is TraderBot progression or crafting electric tools.
How To Smelt Copper Ore Into Copper
To smelt Copper Ore into Copper, research and build a Furnace, place Copper Ore inside, add fuel, and wait for the smelting process to finish. The finished material is called Copper in-game, even though you start by mining Copper Ore.
Wood works fine as early Furnace fuel. Wax Briquettes are more efficient, but they require Bricks, and Bricks can become annoying to farm early. Unless you already have extra Wax Briquettes ready, Wood is the simpler fuel choice.
| Smelting Step | What To Do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Research and build the Furnace. |
| 2 | Place Copper Ore into the Furnace. |
| 3 | Add fuel, such as Wood. |
| 4 | Wait for the Furnace to produce Copper. |
A Furnace can smelt up to 16 Copper Ore at a time. If Copper becomes a major bottleneck, building multiple Furnaces can speed things up because you can process more ore at once.
What Copper Is Used For
Copper is used for electric tools, crafting progression, and TraderBot requirements. One of the most important early uses is the 32x Copper trade, which unlocks the Level 2 Airship Research Upgrade through TraderBot progression.
That Level 2 airship upgrade matters because it expands your travel radius and opens new islands with resources like Wheat and Quartz. If you are trying to push into the next major exploration step, Copper is not optional. It is the resource sitting in the way.
| Copper Use | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Electric tools | Supports stronger crafting and utility progression. |
| TraderBot trades | Needed for important blueprint and upgrade unlocks. |
| Level 2 Airship Research Upgrade | The early TraderBot chain requires 32x Copper for this upgrade. |
| Later automation | Copper supports the broader electric and automation path. |
Once you are ready to spend Copper on airship progression, the Solarpunk airship upgrade guide explains the TraderBot steps and how to apply the upgrade at your Dock.
Copper Farming Tips
The best Copper farming tip is to bring enough Pickaxe materials before leaving your base. Copper is not hard to find once you know the island, but mining enough of it can eat through tools quickly.
| Tip | Why It Helps |
|---|---|
| Bring extra Pickaxe materials | Prevents the trip from ending when your tool breaks. |
| Mine the ground node | It gives much more long-term Copper than the visible chunks. |
| Grab Watermelon too | The same island has Watermelon needed for TraderBot trades. |
| Use Wood as early fuel | It is simpler than spending Brick-related fuel early. |
| Build extra Furnaces later | Multiple Furnaces make Copper processing faster. |
| Save enough for TraderBot | You need 32x Copper for the Level 2 airship upgrade trade. |
Later, mining can be automated with a Drill once you unlock the right tools and power setup. Until then, Copper is a manual island farm, so make each trip count.
Final Blurb
Copper in Solarpunk comes from the small island north of your starting base. Build the Dock, fly there with your airship, bring a Pickaxe and extra crafting materials, mine the Copper Ore node, then smelt the ore in the Furnace to make Copper.
Do not treat Copper like a minor early material. You need it for electric tools, TraderBot progression, and the 32x Copper trade that unlocks the Level 2 airship upgrade. Farm more than you think you need, because Solarpunk will absolutely find a reason to ask for more.
