Solarpunk: How To Get Silicon
To get Silicon in Solarpunk, first get Quartz Ore from the islands unlocked after the Level 2 Airship Research Upgrade, then smelt the Quartz Ore in a Furnace. Quartz is found on the northeast and northwest islands after your airship range expands, including an infinite Quartz mine node on the small island cluster northwest of the starting base.

How To Get Silicon In Solarpunk
To get Silicon in Solarpunk, mine Quartz Ore, bring it back to your base, and put the Quartz Ore into a Furnace. The Furnace processes Quartz Ore into Silicon, which is used for energy buildings, blueprints, animal transport, and later progression.
The main catch is that Silicon does not come directly from a normal rock on the starting island. You need Quartz first, and Quartz is locked behind airship range progression. If your airship still cannot reach the second ring of islands, you are not ready to farm Silicon yet.
| Resource | How To Get It | Used For |
|---|---|---|
| Quartz Ore | Mine it on northeast and northwest islands after the Level 2 airship range upgrade. | Smelt into Silicon. |
| Silicon | Put Quartz Ore into the Furnace. | Energy buildings, TraderBot blueprints, Animal Transport, and advanced progression. |
Get Quartz First
You need Quartz Ore before you can make Silicon. Quartz Ore is the raw material, and Silicon is the processed material made from it.
This works like other smelting routes in Solarpunk. You do not just pick up finished Silicon from the ground. You mine Quartz, carry it home, and process it in the Furnace.
Bring extra Pickaxe materials when you go Quartz farming. The new islands are farther away than your starter island routes, and having your Pickaxe break after two rocks is exactly the kind of cozy survival nonsense that makes you stare at the screen for a second.
Upgrade Your Airship Range
Quartz is found after you unlock the Level 2 Airship Research Upgrade from TraderBot and apply it at your Dock. This upgrade expands the white travel circle on the map and lets you reach the islands with Quartz.
To unlock the Level 2 Airship Research Upgrade, complete the early TraderBot trade chain:
| Trade | Required Item |
|---|---|
| 1 | 4 Watermelon |
| 2 | 12 Cotton |
| 3 | 20 Beeswax |
| 4 | 10 Watermelon |
| 5 | 32 Copper |
After the 32 Copper trade, go back to your Dock and confirm the airship upgrade. The research unlock alone is not enough if you do not apply the upgrade at the Dock.
If you are stuck on that step, the Solarpunk airship upgrade guide explains the full airship range route, and the Solarpunk Copper guide covers the 32 Copper bottleneck.
Quartz Location In Solarpunk
Quartz can be found on the new islands unlocked after the Level 2 airship range upgrade. Check the northeast and northwest islands after your airship range expands.
The best Quartz source is the infinite Quartz mine node on the small island cluster northwest of your starting base. This is the source to use if you want to farm several stacks instead of only grabbing a few loose Quartz rocks.
| Quartz Source | Location | Best Use |
|---|---|---|
| Quartz rocks | New northeast and northwest islands after Level 2 airship range. | Quick early Quartz. |
| Infinite Quartz mine node | Small island cluster northwest of the starting base. | Long-term Quartz farming. |
These islands are also where Wheat starts becoming important, so do not tunnel vision only on Quartz. Bring home Wheat and seeds if you find them, because Wheat gates Bread, chickens, Animal Feed, and several TraderBot steps.
If you are still missing that crop, the Solarpunk Wheat guide explains where to find it and why the first Wheat batch matters so much.
How To Make Silicon
To make Silicon in Solarpunk, put Quartz Ore into the Furnace. The Furnace converts Quartz Ore into Silicon.
| Step | What To Do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Mine Quartz Ore from the upgraded airship islands. |
| 2 | Return to your base. |
| 3 | Place Quartz Ore into the Furnace. |
| 4 | Add fuel if needed. |
| 5 | Collect Silicon when the smelting is done. |
If you do not have a Furnace yet, keep pushing early research and basic resource progression. The Furnace is also used for items like Iron Bars, so it becomes one of the most important stations before advanced crafting opens up.
If early materials are still slowing you down, the Solarpunk Iron guide can help you avoid the starter island Iron wall.
What Silicon Is Used For
Silicon is used for more advanced technology in Solarpunk, especially energy buildings and TraderBot blueprint progression. Your first Silicon should go toward progression before optional projects.
One important early use is bringing Silicon to TraderBot for the next blueprint research upgrade. You will need your first Silicon stack to keep the blueprint path moving, so do not spend all of it on random base upgrades the moment you make it.
| Silicon Use | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| TraderBot blueprint progression | Unlocks more advanced research options. |
| Energy buildings | Supports better base power and automation setups. |
| Animal Transport | Used in the system for moving animals to your base. |
| Advanced crafting | Needed as Solarpunk moves beyond basic wood, stone, and metal items. |
Animal Transport is especially useful once you start moving animals instead of building awkward coops wherever they spawn. The Solarpunk chickens guide covers how chickens, coops, troughs, and transport fit together.
Silicon Tips
The best Silicon tip is to farm more Quartz than you think you need. The islands are far enough away that making repeated tiny trips becomes annoying, especially once energy buildings and blueprint upgrades start asking for Silicon.
| Tip | Why It Helps |
|---|---|
| Apply the airship upgrade at the Dock | The range does not help unless the upgrade is confirmed. |
| Search northwest for the infinite Quartz node | This is the best long-term Quartz source. |
| Bring extra Pickaxe materials | Quartz farming can outlast one tool. |
| Bring Quartz home in bulk | Fewer long airship trips saves time. |
| Save your first Silicon for progression | TraderBot and blueprints matter more than decorative spending. |
| Grab Wheat while exploring | The same island tier is important for crop progression too. |
Silicon is not hard once you know the chain. The slow part is reaching Quartz. Upgrade the airship, mine Quartz, smelt it, then spend the first Silicon on unlocks that push progression forward.
Final Blurb
To get Silicon in Solarpunk, upgrade your airship range to Level 2, mine Quartz Ore from the northeast or northwest islands, then smelt the Quartz Ore in the Furnace. The infinite Quartz node northwest of the starting base is the best long-term source.
Do not waste the first Silicon on random projects. Use it to keep TraderBot, blueprint research, energy buildings, and later animal transport moving. Quartz is the trip; Silicon is the payoff.
