Final Fantasy Resonance lets you build characters with abilities learned from different Visions, but the system does not work like a standard skill menu. Some abilities are provided automatically by your currently equipped Vision, while others only become available for manual loadouts after you raise that Vision's Mastery Rank. AP then determines how many of those learned abilities you can equip at the same time.

How to Equip Abilities in Final Fantasy Resonance
To equip abilities in Final Fantasy Resonance, open the menu and go to Equipment & Abilities, select the character you want to change, then open the Abilities section. Choose one of the abilities that character has already unlocked and assign it as long as you have enough available AP.
- Open the main menu.
- Select Equipment & Abilities.
- Choose the character you want to customize.
- Open the Abilities section.
- Select an unlocked ability.
- Make sure you have enough AP to equip it.
Each manually equipped ability has an AP cost. If your current setup has already used the character's available AP, you will need to remove another ability or increase that character's AP before adding anything else.
Why Can't You Equip an Ability?
If a Vision ability appears unavailable or will not let you confirm it, first check which Vision that character currently has equipped.
The abilities belonging to your active Vision are already granted automatically. You do not need to spend one of your manual ability slots or additional AP to equip the same skill again while that Vision is active.
This is why a skill can look unavailable even though you have already learned it. The game is not necessarily preventing you from using the ability; the equipped Vision may already be supplying it to that character.
Equip a different Vision and check the ability menu again. Once the original Vision is no longer active, abilities you have permanently learned from it can be placed into your build manually.
How to Unlock Vision Abilities Permanently
Equipping a Vision immediately gives that character access to the abilities provided by the Vision itself. Permanently using those abilities without keeping that Vision equipped requires more work.
Keep the Vision equipped and fight enemies to earn Mastery Rank Points. As its Mastery Rank increases, the character unlocks abilities from that Vision for independent use.
Once an ability has been unlocked through Mastery Rank, you can switch to another Vision and still equip the learned ability through Equipment & Abilities, provided you have enough AP.
This is what allows Final Fantasy Resonance builds to eventually combine skills learned from several different Visions rather than forcing each character to use only the kit attached to their current one.
If you are still collecting Visions to learn abilities from, our Final Fantasy Resonance all Visions locations guide covers all 26 unlocks.
How to Increase AP
AP controls how many learned abilities you can add to a character's custom setup. Each ability has its own AP requirement, so stronger or more developed builds eventually need a larger AP pool.
You increase AP through Vision Mastery. Equipping Visions and raising their Mastery Rank in combat can grant permanent AP increases at certain ranks.
Those AP increases remain with the character even after the Vision responsible for unlocking them is removed. This means developing multiple Visions does more than expand your ability library; it also gradually gives you more room to combine those abilities in the same build.
Because Mastery comes from fighting with a Vision equipped, rotating Visions through characters is useful if you want more flexibility later instead of leaving the same Vision equipped for the entire game.
Equipped Vision Abilities vs Learned Abilities
The easiest way to understand the system is to separate abilities into two groups.
- Current Vision abilities: Available automatically while that Vision is equipped and do not need to be manually assigned through the normal ability slots.
- Learned Vision abilities: Unlocked by increasing Mastery Rank and can be manually equipped even after switching to another Vision, but they consume AP.
That distinction explains most of the confusion around the ability menu. If a skill from your current Vision appears unavailable for manual selection, you are usually already receiving it directly from the Vision. The manual slots are there so you can bring previously learned abilities from other Visions into the same character setup.
Awakening is a separate Vision progression system. It uses Magicite to strengthen a Vision and expand what it can provide, while Mastery Rank is the system that develops through combat and allows characters to retain abilities for other builds. Our Final Fantasy Resonance how to awaken Visions guide covers that side of the system separately.
