Permafrost How to Make Quality Metal
Quality Metal becomes important once Permafrost starts asking for stronger tools, military gear, ammunition, and armored construction pieces. Although it can occasionally be looted or bought, crafting it is the dependable route when you need more than one or two pieces for a larger upgrade.

How to Make Quality Metal in Permafrost
Quality Metal is crafted at the Makeshift Smelter using 5 Iron and 5 Scrap. One craft produces 1 Quality Metal and takes 20 seconds to complete.
You do not need to wait for a Professional Smelter for this basic recipe. Once the Quality Metal recipe is available to you, the Makeshift Smelter is enough to turn your Iron and Scrap into the higher-grade material.
Because every craft consumes five of each resource, Quality Metal becomes expensive quickly when you start making equipment or armored building parts in bulk. It is worth stockpiling Iron and Scrap instead of crafting one piece at a time only when a recipe blocks you.
Quality Metal Recipe
Crafting Station: Makeshift Smelter
Iron: 5
Scrap: 5
Craft Time: 20 seconds
Yield: 1 Quality Metal
The main bottleneck is therefore not the smelting time but the material cost. A project requiring 10 Quality Metal already represents 50 Iron and 50 Scrap, so larger crafting plans can consume basic resources much faster than the final recipe count suggests.
This is especially noticeable once you move into armored construction, where individual walls, foundations, and workstations can consume several Quality Metal each.
Other Ways to Get Quality Metal
Crafting is not the only source. Quality Metal can also appear in Quality Crates and is sold by several traders across the world, including general and hunting traders in multiple regions.
Buying it can be useful when you are short by one or two pieces and do not want to spend another batch of Iron and Scrap, but trader stock is limited enough that it should be treated as a supplement rather than your main supply.
Quality Crates can also provide it directly, although the drop chance is low enough that looting should be viewed as a bonus rather than a dependable farming method.
For sustained production, keeping the Makeshift Smelter supplied remains the most predictable approach.
What Quality Metal Is Used For
Quality Metal is used across dozens of recipes and building pieces, covering everything from ammunition and tools to military clothing and high-end base construction.
Important crafting uses include the Quality Axe, Quality Pickaxe, Quality Metal Knife, several ammunition types, Military armor pieces, and Lunar equipment.
It is also heavily used in armored base construction. Armored Foundations and Armored Walls each consume 5 Quality Metal, while Armored Doorways, Floors, Roofs, Windows, Stairs, Shutters, and other reinforced pieces use smaller amounts.
Some workstations are even more expensive. The NPC Workbench requires 10 Quality Metal, while the Workbench Furnace uses 5, so it is very easy to burn through a stockpile if you start upgrading your base and equipment at the same time.
What to Spend Quality Metal on First
If your supply is limited, prioritize progression items before turning large amounts of Quality Metal into armored construction pieces.
Better tools are usually a more practical early investment because they can improve the rest of your gathering loop, while weapons, ammunition, and protective gear may directly affect which areas you can safely explore. Large armored structures can consume several ingots per piece and quickly drain resources that could have unlocked more useful equipment.
It is also worth checking the full material cost before starting a large build. A single Armored Foundation costs 5 Quality Metal, which means that one piece alone represents 25 Iron and 25 Scrap before accounting for anything else in the structure.
Once your tools, equipment, and key workstations are covered, converting surplus Iron and Scrap into Quality Metal for armored construction becomes much easier to justify.
If you are moving into the later resource chain as well, our Permafrost How to Mine Moonrock guide covers another material used around higher-end progression.
