Permafrost How to Get Scrap

Scrap in Permafrost does not come from mining metal deposits directly. The main early-game method is to loot Metal Junk from Damaged Cars, take it to a Dismantle Bench, and recycle it into Scrap. House Camp is the best place to start because it puts a large supply of cars, a usable Dismantle Bench, and the Scrap tool quest in the same area.

How to Get Scrap in Permafrost

Put Metal Junk into a Dismantle Bench to turn it into Scrap. Each piece of Metal Junk produces 2 Scrap and takes roughly 5 seconds to process.

Input: 1 Metal Junk
Output: 2 Scrap
Processing time: About 5 seconds per piece
Best early location: House Camp
Free early bench: Inside the House Camp Church

The important distinction is that Metal Junk and Scrap are two separate materials. Finding a wrecked car does not normally give you finished Scrap. The car supplies Metal Junk, and the Dismantle Bench performs the conversion.

So the basic Scrap farming loop is:

Damaged Cars → Metal Junk → Dismantle Bench → Scrap

Where to Find Metal Junk for Scrap

Damaged Cars are the main early source of Metal Junk. House Camp has a particularly useful concentration of wrecked vehicles, making it a natural place to gather your first large batch.

Walk up to a Damaged Car and open it like a loot container. You do not need to break the vehicle apart with an axe or pickaxe.

That makes Scrap farming faster than it can initially look. Instead of spending tool durability smashing every abandoned vehicle you see, run through an area with several cars, open each one, take the Metal Junk, and bring the entire haul back for recycling.

The yards around House Camp are especially convenient because you can finish looting and immediately take the Metal Junk to the Church without making another long resource trip.

Where to Find a Dismantle Bench

You do not need to build a Dismantle Bench before making your first Scrap.

House Camp already has one inside the Church. Approach the bench and press F to open its recycling interface, then move your Metal Junk into one of the available slots.

The bench processes the stack automatically. Once a cycle finishes, collect the resulting Scrap and use it for crafting or construction.

This makes the Church one of the most useful early resource-processing stops in House Camp. You can arrive with Metal Junk from the surrounding cars, start recycling it, and leave with a material that immediately feeds several important upgrades.

Use All Five Slots to Make Scrap Faster

The Dismantle Bench has five recycling slots, and each slot runs independently.

If you place a large stack of Metal Junk into only one slot, the bench processes one piece every 5 seconds. Splitting the Metal Junk between several slots lets multiple pieces process at the same time.

For example, 10 Metal Junk takes about 50 seconds through one slot. Split those 10 pieces evenly between all five slots and each slot only has two pieces to process, cutting the active processing time to roughly 10 seconds.

1 slot with 10 Metal Junk: About 50 seconds
5 slots with 2 Metal Junk each: About 10 seconds
Final result either way: 20 Scrap

You also do not have to stand at the bench while it works. Load the recycling slots, continue handling other jobs around House Camp, then return to collect the finished materials.

This makes Scrap a good material to process in batches rather than one piece at a time every time you find Metal Junk.

Collect 10 Metal Junk for Your First Scrap Tool Set

There is a useful reason to make 10 Metal Junk your first target.

The Scrap Axe costs 8 Scrap, the Scrap Pickaxe costs 7, and the Scrap Shiv costs 5. Together, those three recipes require exactly 20 Scrap.

Since every Metal Junk produces 2 Scrap, 10 Metal Junk gives you exactly the Scrap portion needed for the complete set.

Scrap Axe: 8 Scrap
Scrap Pickaxe: 7 Scrap
Scrap Shiv: 5 Scrap
Total: 20 Scrap
Metal Junk required: 10

This is also why the House Camp Flipper quest asks you to dismantle 10 Metal Junk. The quest's recycling target produces exactly 20 Scrap, matching the Scrap cost of the three tools it subsequently asks you to craft.

You will still need Processed Plastic for those recipes, but from a Scrap perspective, reaching 10 Metal Junk means you have enough.

Prioritize the Scrap Pickaxe if You Are Advancing Mining

If you do not need all three Scrap tools immediately, the Scrap Pickaxe is an important breakpoint because it lets you begin harvesting Iron.

That makes Scrap part of a larger mining chain rather than just another generic crafting material. Metal Junk becomes Scrap, Scrap helps make the Scrap Pickaxe, and the Scrap Pickaxe opens access to Iron that supports the next stages of tool crafting.

If your goal is eventually reaching higher-tier materials, including Moonrock, this is the route worth prioritizing. Our Permafrost Moonrock mining guide covers the later Iron Pickaxe requirement and the best Moonrock locations.

Do Not Farm Scrap Without Also Checking for Plastic Junk

Scrap alone is not enough to make the early Scrap tools.

The same Dismantle Bench turns Plastic Junk into Processed Plastic at the same 1-to-2 conversion rate. Since the Scrap Axe, Pickaxe, and Shiv also require Processed Plastic, ignoring Plastic Junk can leave you with a pile of Scrap and no way to finish the tools you were farming it for.

Plastic Junk comes from Trash Piles around House Camp rather than Damaged Cars. Unlike cars, these piles are broken with an appropriate pickaxe.

When you return to the Church, put Metal Junk and Plastic Junk into different Dismantle Bench slots and let both materials process together.

Metal Junk: 2 Scrap each
Plastic Junk: 2 Processed Plastic each
Best approach: Gather both during the same House Camp trip and recycle them in parallel

Best Early Scrap Farming Loop

For early Scrap, there is little reason to make a complicated cross-map farming route.

Start around House Camp and search the nearby yards for Damaged Cars. Open every wreck you pass and collect its Metal Junk, while also grabbing useful Oil or other loot from the same containers.

Once you have a worthwhile stack, return to the Church, split the Metal Junk across the Dismantle Bench slots, and let it process while you handle anything else you need in the settlement.

If you are returning to House Camp from farther away, the settlement also has convenient travel access. Our Permafrost fast travel guide covers how the travel system works.

The route works because it minimizes dead travel: the resource source and processing station are in the same general area.

How to Build Your Own Dismantle Bench

You eventually unlock the ability to build a Dismantle Bench through House Camp quest progression.

The Disassembler: The First Disassembling side quest has you collect the Dismantle Bench blueprint, build one, use it, and explain the system to Rusty. Completing the quest also rewards 10 Scrap.

A player-built Dismantle Bench costs 10 Wood and 10 Iron.

Dismantle Bench: 10 Wood + 10 Iron
Unlock: Quest progression
Quest: Disassembler: The First Disassembling
Quest reward: 10 Scrap + 50 Bucks

Building your own becomes useful once your base or normal scavenging routes are far enough from House Camp that repeatedly returning to the Church wastes more time than the Iron used for the station.

Early on, though, use the free Church bench. Spending Iron on your own station just to duplicate one you can already access nearby is unnecessary unless the location itself is becoming inconvenient.

The Fastest Way to Get Scrap Early

If you only need Scrap right now, go to House Camp, loot Damaged Cars until you have a stack of Metal Junk, then recycle it at the Dismantle Bench inside the Church.

Aim for at least 10 Metal Junk on your first proper run. That becomes 20 Scrap, exactly enough Scrap for the Axe, Pickaxe, and Shiv set, and you can process the stack much faster by dividing it between the bench's five slots.

After that, treat Scrap as the end of a recycling loop rather than something you search for directly. Whenever you see another Damaged Car, you are effectively looking at another possible source of Scrap waiting to be processed.
