Planet Zoo 2 How to Increase Biodiversity

Biodiversity in Planet Zoo 2 Wildlife Reserves is not simply a counter for how many different species you release. A reserve improves when it develops a healthier mix of animals and ecosystem roles while its biomes and environmental conditions are properly maintained, which is why repeatedly adding similar herbivores can produce surprisingly little progress.

How to Increase Biodiversity in Planet Zoo 2

To increase Biodiversity in a Wildlife Reserve, release more species while deliberately expanding the number of ecosystem roles represented in the reserve. A mixture of prey animals, predators, and other compatible species is more effective than filling the reserve with several animals that all occupy essentially the same ecological role.

You should also establish the reserve's required biomes and remove environmental problems such as invasive flora or pollution. Hover over the reserve's star rating to check what is currently limiting its development rather than assuming the problem is always a lack of animals.

The most useful way to think about Biodiversity is as an ecosystem-building score. Before releasing another species, ask whether it adds something the reserve does not already have.

Add Different Ecosystem Roles, Not Just More Species

The number of species matters, but variety alone does not guarantee a large Biodiversity increase. Two additional prey species may add less ecological diversity than introducing a predator into a reserve that already has a suitable prey population.

This means the best next release is often not whichever species happens to be available first. Look at the animals already living in the reserve and identify which part of the ecosystem is still underrepresented.

A reserve dominated by grazing or browsing animals should generally prioritize a compatible species that expands the food web rather than another animal filling the same broad niche. Predators are particularly valuable for creating that balance, although their release requirements can depend on having sufficient prey already established.

This creates a natural order to reserve development: establish the lower levels of the ecosystem first, then introduce animals whose requirements depend on them.

Build Release Groups Before You Need Them

Biodiversity progression begins back in your zoo because animals cannot simply be added to a Wildlife Reserve whenever you want them. You need access to the species, complete the relevant research, and assemble an eligible Release Group.

Breeding several different reserve-compatible species at the same time prevents progress from stopping while you wait for one population to mature. Juveniles can also be included in Release Groups when eligible, so check younger animals instead of assuming you must wait for every individual to become an adult.

This is particularly useful when you know the next Biodiversity increase will require another ecological role. Instead of breeding animals randomly and deciding what to release afterward, work backward from what the reserve currently lacks.

If acquiring enough animals is slowing that process down, our Planet Zoo 2 How to Get Animals guide covers the main ways to expand your zoo population.

Fix Reserve Conditions Before Adding More Animals

If releasing additional species barely changes the reserve rating, stop adding animals temporarily and inspect the reserve itself.

Hover over the star display and check for warnings involving invasive flora, pollution, incomplete biomes, or other environmental requirements. These can hold back the reserve even when its animal population appears healthy.

Make sure the necessary ecosystems are established rather than merely present. A reserve with several species but unfinished environmental objectives can look much more developed than its rating suggests.

This is why repeatedly releasing animals is sometimes the wrong response to a stalled Biodiversity score. If the habitat side of the reserve is unfinished, another Release Group may add population without addressing the actual bottleneck.

Why Your Biodiversity Rating Can Get Stuck

If your Biodiversity rating refuses to increase, work through the reserve in this order:

1. Check the star rating for pollution, invasive flora, or unfinished conditions.
2. Confirm the required biomes are established.
3. Count the ecological roles already represented, not only the species total.
4. Add a species that fills a missing role rather than duplicating an existing one.
5. Check whether the reserve still needs a larger overall animal population.

The final point matters because different Wildlife Reserves do not appear to progress from one universal species count. A smaller reserve can reach a higher rating with relatively few species, while a larger reserve may still expect substantially more animals overall.

That is why advice such as "release five species" should not be treated as a universal requirement. Five species may be enough in one reserve while another still has room for dozens of animals and requires considerably more development.

If you already have a broad mix of ecosystem roles, completed environments, no visible environmental penalties, and a substantial population but the rating still refuses to move, a bug is also possible. At that point, saving and reloading or checking for current game updates is more sensible than repeatedly releasing similar animals just to force the meter upward.

How Biodiversity Affects Accreditation

Biodiversity is especially important in Franchise mode because Wildlife Reserve ratings contribute to broader Accreditation progression. Raising a reserve from two stars toward three and beyond can therefore affect which systems and content become available elsewhere in the franchise.

This also means the fastest Accreditation route is not necessarily maximizing one reserve before touching anything else. If another reserve or zoo has easier rating improvements available, progressing several properties can sometimes be more efficient than forcing a difficult Biodiversity increase in one location.

Our Planet Zoo 2 Accreditation Guide covers that larger progression system separately.

For Biodiversity itself, focus on balance rather than raw animal count. Establish the reserve properly, remove environmental penalties, release animals that expand the ecosystem instead of repeating the same role, and use the reserve's own rating information to identify what is missing before committing another Release Group.
