Star Wars Galactic Racer Grey Screen Fix
If Star Wars Galactic Racer is stuck on a grey or gray screen when launching on PC, the game may not actually be frozen. A common launch behavior is an unusually long shader compilation that can leave the screen looking blank for 10 to 15 minutes, but there are also cases where a crash leaves the game stuck on the same screen until the installation is verified or the shader cache is rebuilt.

Star Wars Galactic Racer Grey and Gray Screen Fix
If Galactic Racer opens to a grey or gray screen but the game is still running, leave it alone for around 10 to 15 minutes once before force-closing it. Multiple PC players have found that what looks like a frozen screen is actually the game compiling shaders in the background.
If it still does not progress, verify the game's files through Steam and launch it again. This is especially worth doing if the gray screen started after Galactic Racer previously crashed.
Game stays open on gray/grey screen: Wait 10 to 15 minutes once
Still stuck: Verify the game files through Steam
Started after a crash: Verify before reinstalling anything
Recently updated GPU driver: Expect another long shader rebuild
Steam immediately returns to Play: This is probably a different launch problem
The Gray Screen May Actually Be Shader Compilation
Galactic Racer does a poor job of making this obvious. Players have reported sitting on what appears to be a black, gray, or grey screen for several minutes before the game suddenly continues normally.
Look closely near the upper-left area of the launch screen. On some systems, a shader compilation message or progress indicator can be extremely difficult to see.
The important distinction is whether Galactic Racer is still running. If Steam continues showing the game as running and no crash reporter appears, give the shader process time to finish before assuming it has locked up.
This is particularly relevant after changing graphics drivers. The October 8 PC hotfix raised the game's minimum graphics-driver requirement, and the developers specifically warn that the next launch after a required driver update takes longer because the shader cache has to be rebuilt.
Verify Galactic Racer's Files if Waiting Does Nothing
If the screen never changes, verifying the installation should be the next step rather than immediately reinstalling the entire game.
Steam: Library → Star Wars Galactic Racer → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files
There are two useful player reports behind this recommendation. One launch issue began working after verification, while another player became stuck on a gray screen after a previous session ended in a crash. Updating drivers and restarting did not solve that second case, but verifying the files changed the next launch back to the shader-loading splash screen and the game then loaded normally.
That does not prove every gray screen is caused by damaged game files, but it makes verification a much better second step than deleting saves or changing Windows system settings.
Gray Screen After Galactic Racer Crashes
A gray screen that only appears after the game has already worked normally is a different clue from the long first-launch screen.
If Galactic Racer previously launched successfully and then starts hanging on gray after a crash, do not assume you simply need to wait through the original first-time shader compilation again. Verify the files, restart Steam, then launch the game and allow any new shader compilation to finish.
This gives you a simple way to distinguish the two situations:
First-ever launch: Waiting is the first thing to try
First launch after a GPU driver update: Waiting is also expected
Gray screen suddenly appears after a crash: Verify files first, then wait through the next shader rebuild
I would also avoid deleting your campaign data as an early troubleshooting step. Galactic Racer's official known-issues list includes cases where save-file corruption may occur without properly notifying the player, so protecting an existing save is more sensible than using it as the first thing to reset.
Update Your Graphics Driver Before Reinstalling
The latest Galactic Racer hotfix now checks minimum graphics-driver requirements when the game boots. If the game asks you to update your driver, do that before trying more aggressive fixes.
Be aware that updating the driver can make the very next launch look worse before it looks better. Because the shader cache needs to be rebuilt, you can end up staring at another long gray or black screen immediately after fixing the driver problem.
In other words, do not update the driver, see another blank screen, and immediately assume the driver update failed. Give that first post-update launch enough time to compile its shaders.
RTX 50-Series Owners Should Separate Gray Screens From DLSS Crashes
NVIDIA RTX 50-series systems have a separate officially acknowledged problem involving DLSS and Frame Generation that can cause Galactic Racer to crash.
That issue can eventually lead you back to a bad launch or shader rebuild, but it is not the same thing as a gray screen that simply sits there while shaders compile.
If you can reach the graphics menu but the game repeatedly crashes afterward, test with Frame Generation disabled and then test with both Frame Generation and DLSS disabled. If the game never reaches the menu at all and simply remains running on gray, deal with the launch and shader issue first.
This distinction matters because changing DLSS settings will not help much if your actual problem is that the game has not finished its startup shader process.
Do Not Start With BIOS or Hypervisor Fixes
Some community troubleshooting threads recommend disabling Windows Hyper-V, changing hypervisorlaunchtype, disabling Intel virtualization in the BIOS, or disabling Intel AI/NPU hardware.
Those fixes are much more invasive than necessary for a normal grey or gray screen and should not be your starting point.
They are being discussed mainly around separate launch crashes involving D3D12, NPU, or Intel AI Boost behavior. If Galactic Racer is simply sitting on a blank-looking screen while the process remains alive, waiting, verifying files, and checking your graphics driver are much more appropriate first steps.
Gray screen while game stays running: Do not touch BIOS settings first
D3D12/NPU error in an actual crash report: That is a separate troubleshooting path
No matching error: Avoid changing virtualization settings unnecessarily
How to Tell if You Have a Different Galactic Racer Launch Problem
The gray screen issue gets mixed together with several other launch problems because all of them prevent players from reaching the main menu.
If Steam changes from Running straight back to the Play button, the game has actually closed. Waiting 15 minutes will not help because there is no shader process still running.
If you reach the user agreement screen and the game freezes there, that is also a different issue. One player reported getting past that particular problem by launching without an internet connection, but that is a community workaround rather than an official gray-screen fix.
Steam Deck has another separate false-freeze problem: the Epic Online Services overlay can fail to display and make Galactic Racer look like it is hung. The developers' current workaround on Steam Deck is to press B to cancel the invisible overlay and return to the game.
Use This to Identify Which Problem You Have
Gray/grey or black screen, Steam still says Running: Likely shader compilation or launch hang
Screen eventually loads after 10 to 15 minutes: Shader compilation was the cause
Gray screen started after a crash: Verify game files and relaunch
Long launch immediately after driver update: Shader cache is rebuilding
Steam returns to Play almost immediately: Actual launch crash, not this gray-screen issue
RTX 50-series crash after reaching the game: Test DLSS and Frame Generation separately
Steam Deck appears frozen around EOS: Press B
The biggest mistake is treating every blank-looking launch as the same bug. If the process is still alive, give Galactic Racer time to finish its shader work first. If the process closes, throws an error, or always fails at a specific point, move to the troubleshooting path that matches that symptom instead.
