Valor Mortis How to Equip Ambers
Ambers are one of Valor Mortis' main build-customization systems, adding passive bonuses and abilities beyond the standard level-up tree. You can start collecting them before the game actually lets you use them, with additional slots opening gradually as William reaches higher levels.

Valor Mortis How to Equip Ambers
To equip Ambers in Valor Mortis, reach Level 5 and interact with any Lantern. Open the level-up menu and look along the bottom layer for an Amber slot marked with a + symbol. Select the slot, choose the Amber you want to use, and its passive bonus will become active.
You do not need to find a separate Amber NPC, workbench, or equipment menu. Ambers are managed directly through the same Lantern interface used for leveling up.
- Reach Level 5.
- Interact with any Lantern.
- Open the level-up menu.
- Select the + symbol in the Amber slot.
- Choose the Amber you want to equip.
When Can You Equip Ambers in Valor Mortis?
The first Amber slot unlocks at Level 5. If you find an Amber before reaching that point, there is nothing else you need to unlock or complete first; the equip slot simply has not opened yet.
Once William reaches Level 5, return to any Lantern and the first Amber slot will appear in the level-up menu. Any Ambers you collected beforehand can then be equipped immediately.
This makes Level 5 the point where Ambers start affecting your build rather than simply sitting in your collection.
All Amber Slot Unlock Levels
Valor Mortis has five Amber slots in total. After the first slot opens at Level 5, another becomes available every 10 levels.
- Amber Slot 1 — Level 5
- Amber Slot 2 — Level 15
- Amber Slot 3 — Level 25
- Amber Slot 4 — Level 35
- Amber Slot 5 — Level 45
Each new slot lets you keep another Amber effect active at the same time, so Ambers become a larger part of your build as you move deeper into the game. By Level 45, you can have five equipped at once.
How to Change Equipped Ambers
Equipping an Amber is not permanent. To change one, interact with a Lantern, return to the level-up menu, select the Amber slot you want to replace, and choose a different Amber from your collection.
Because Ambers can be swapped freely, there is no need to hold an empty slot because you are worried about making the wrong choice. You can change your setup as you collect new Ambers or want different passive bonuses for a particular build.
How to Get More Ambers in Valor Mortis
Ambers can be obtained from quests and chests while exploring Valor Mortis. Checking optional areas and completing side content therefore gives you more build options in addition to whatever weapons and other resources you find along the way.
New Ambers expand the passive effects available to you, while additional Amber slots determine how many of those effects can be active at once.
If you are also improving the weapons around your Amber setup, our Valor Mortis weapon upgrade guide explains when James's Iron Bench unlocks and which materials are used for melee weapons and firearms.
What Do Duplicate Ambers Do?
Finding another copy of an Amber you already own upgrades that Amber rather than giving you a useless duplicate. Its passive bonus becomes stronger as you acquire additional copies.
That means there are two ways your Amber setup improves over time: collecting new Ambers gives you more effects to choose from, while finding duplicates strengthens effects you already have.
Ambers are also tied to full game completion. The Ambersmith achievement requires you to gather every Amber, so players working toward all achievements will eventually need the complete collection. Our Valor Mortis Achievement Guide covers that requirement alongside the rest of the game's achievements.
