WARDOGS Failed to Connect to Server in Reasonable Time Fix

The WARDOGS “Failed to Connect to Server in Reasonable Time” error normally appears after you have already made it far enough to see or attempt to join a server, only for the connection itself to time out. That makes this a little different from the authentication and login errors players can encounter before reaching the server browser, and the best fix depends heavily on whether one server is failing or everything you try gives you the same message.

WARDOGS Failed to Connect Usually Means the Server Join Timed Out

If WARDOGS says it “Failed to Connect to Server in Reasonable Time,” the game was unable to finish connecting you to the selected server before its connection attempt timed out. This can happen because that individual server is struggling, the server has filled or changed state while you were joining, there is a wider WARDOGS service problem, or something between your PC and the server is interrupting the connection.

The important part is that I would not assume your installation is broken just because you see this message. WARDOGS can launch normally, show you the server browser, and still fail at the final server-connection stage.

That also gives you a much faster way to troubleshoot it: stop retrying the exact same server and find out how widespread the failure actually is.

Try a Different WARDOGS Server First

My first move would be joining another server in the same region.

This is one of the easiest ways to separate a problem with your game from a problem with one particular server. If Server A repeatedly gives you the reasonable-time error but Server B lets you straight in, there is very little reason to start resetting Windows or reinstalling WARDOGS. You have already proven that your client can establish a multiplayer connection.

Do not just pick another server with nearly identical conditions, either. If possible, choose one with open slots rather than something sitting at or near its player limit.

WARDOGS server states can also change quickly. A server that appeared available when you clicked Join may be full or otherwise unavailable by the time the connection finishes, especially when the game is experiencing unusually heavy traffic.

Figure Out Whether One Server or Every Server Is Failing

This is the part I think matters most for this particular WARDOGS error. Before applying ten different fixes, use the server browser as a diagnostic tool.

If only one server gives you the error, move on from that server. If several servers in one region fail but another region works, the problem may be regional or related to the route between you and those servers. If every server fails for you while other players are successfully joining, then your client, Steam session, game version, or network becomes much more worth investigating.

If practically everyone is reporting the same connection failures at the same time, then local troubleshooting moves back down the priority list again.

That gives you a simple rule: one server failing points toward the server, every server failing points more toward your side or a wider service issue, and masses of players failing at once points toward WARDOGS infrastructure.

Refresh the Server Browser Instead of Rejoining the Same Listing

If a server times out, return to the browser and refresh the list before trying again.

I would rather do this than immediately hammer the Join button on the same listing. What you saw when the browser originally loaded may no longer represent the server's current state, particularly during periods where servers are rapidly filling, restarting, or coming online.

You can also narrow the browser to a single appropriate region and refresh again. If that produces a different set of available servers, try one of those before changing anything outside the game.

If the server disappears after the refresh, that is useful information by itself. The failed connection may simply have happened while the server was becoming unavailable.

Restart WARDOGS and Steam if Every Server Times Out

Once multiple unrelated servers are failing, I would completely restart WARDOGS and Steam.

Exit the game, close Steam fully rather than leaving it running in the system tray, reopen Steam, and launch WARDOGS again. Then refresh the server browser and test another server.

This gives the client a new Steam and online-services session and is worth doing before more disruptive troubleshooting.

There is one exception: if you are currently sitting in a large login queue and the wider WARDOGS service is clearly under heavy demand, repeatedly restarting may make the situation worse by forcing you back through the queue. In that situation, I would only restart once you have actually reached the server browser and confirmed that multiple join attempts are failing.

Make Sure Steam Has Finished Updating WARDOGS

A server connection can also fail when your client is no longer on the build the server expects, so check Steam for a pending WARDOGS update.

Close the game and look at the Downloads section in Steam. If WARDOGS has an update waiting, let it finish completely before reopening the game.

This becomes especially important around launch, hotfixes, and server restarts. If the developers deploy a new build while you still have the previous client running, endlessly retrying servers is not going to solve a version mismatch.

Restarting Steam can also force it to notice an update that had not appeared while the client remained open.

Test Another Region Without Choosing a Terrible Ping

If every server in your normal WARDOGS region gives you the reasonable-time error, try another nearby region as a test.

I would not jump halfway across the world just to get into a match. The goal here is to determine whether the failure follows you everywhere or is concentrated within one region.

For example, if every appropriate server in your normal region times out but a nearby region connects immediately, you have narrowed the problem considerably. You can either play there temporarily if the latency is acceptable or return to your normal region later once its servers are behaving normally.

If both regions fail in exactly the same way, move on to the client and network checks below.

Test Your Network if WARDOGS Is Only Broken for You

I would only start changing network settings after you have established that WARDOGS is working for other players and that multiple servers are failing from your PC.

If you use a VPN, disable it temporarily and try again. A VPN changes the route your connection takes to the game server, so removing it is an easy test when you are getting repeated connection timeouts.

You can also restart your router and reconnect before trying WARDOGS again.

For a more useful test, try a completely different internet connection if one is available. A mobile hotspot works well for this because you are changing the entire network path rather than changing individual settings and hoping one of them matters.

If WARDOGS connects over the hotspot but immediately returns to the reasonable-time error on your normal internet connection, I would focus further troubleshooting on your home network or ISP route.

If it fails identically on both networks, particularly while other WARDOGS players are also reporting connection problems, the evidence shifts back toward the game or its servers.

Verify WARDOGS Files Only After the Basic Checks

Verifying the installation is reasonable if every server keeps failing and there is no wider outage, but I would not make it the first fix.

In Steam, open your WARDOGS properties, go to Installed Files, and use the option to verify the integrity of the game files. Steam will check the local installation and replace anything that is missing or damaged.

This makes more sense if the problem began after an update, you have other unusual game behavior alongside the connection error, or simpler server and network tests have already failed.

If one WARDOGS server times out while another works perfectly, verifying several gigabytes of files is solving the wrong problem.

WARDOGS Launch Traffic Can Cause Server Connection Problems

WARDOGS has already demonstrated just how much demand its backend can receive, and launch-day conditions make server-side failures particularly important to rule out.

Players have reported lengthy queues, disconnects after waiting, authentication failures, and situations where they finally reached much lower queue positions only to get kicked and return hundreds of thousands of places farther back.

Servers have also been taken down and restarted during the launch period, meaning there are times when a connection failure simply is not something you can repair from Windows.

If the reasonable-time message suddenly begins appearing across servers while the community is simultaneously reporting widespread trouble, I would stop troubleshooting locally for a bit. Changing DNS, reinstalling WARDOGS, or resetting Windows networking cannot repair a game server that is restarting or overloaded.

Should You Reinstall WARDOGS for the Reasonable Time Error?

Not initially. Reinstalling WARDOGS would be near the bottom of my list for a straightforward server connection timeout.

Start by trying another server, refreshing the browser, checking another region, restarting WARDOGS and Steam, confirming there is no pending update, and determining whether other players are having the same problem.

If every server still fails while WARDOGS is otherwise operating normally for everyone else, test your network and verify the game files.

I would only consider a complete reinstall after those checks fail or if you also have evidence that the game installation itself is damaged. For most players getting “Failed to Connect to Server in Reasonable Time” during periods of heavy WARDOGS server activity, the much more useful question is not “what do I reinstall?” but “does this happen on every server?”

That single test usually tells you which direction to troubleshoot next.
