How To Get Relics and Use Missionaries in Civ 7

In Civilization 7, religion is a fantastic way to collect relics and boost your culture. If you’ve ever wanted to use your missionaries for something other than annoying rival civilizations, this guide will show you how to get relics and turn them into relic-hunting machines.

How To Get Relics in Civilization 7

Relics are sacred artifacts that provide culture and faith bonuses, and they play a key role in the Tokshakhana milestone of the Exploration Age. To complete this legacy path, you’ll need to collect and display a set number of relics. Fortunately, missionaries are your ticket to success.

Step 1: Establish a Religion

Before you can start racking up relics, you need to create your own religion. Here’s what you need:

  • Study the Piety civic.

  • Build a Temple in one of your settlements.

  • Choose a religion and give it a fancy name (or something absurd—your choice).

Once your religion is up and running, it’s time to start sending out missionaries.

Step 2: Train and Use Missionaries

Missionaries are the backbone of relic acquisition. To get started:

  1. Train a Missionary (or a unique religious unit, if your civ has one).

  2. Move your Missionary to a foreign settlement.

  3. Click "Spread Religion" and watch as the locals suddenly embrace your faith.

If you’ve chosen the right belief system, you’ll also get relics along the way.

Step 3: Pick the Right Reliquary Belief

Not all religions are created equal when it comes to relic farming. Your best bet is to select the Icons belief because it grants +2 relics whenever you convert a city-state for the first time. This makes relic collection laughably easy.

If you missed out on Icons, here are some backup options:

  • Evangelism – +1 relic for converting another civ’s settlement in distant lands (not city-states).

  • Reliquaries – +1 relic for converting a settlement with a Temple or Altar.

  • Lay Followers – +1 relic for converting a settlement with 10 rural population.

  • Ecclesiasticism – +1 relic for converting a settlement with 10 urban population.

While these work, Icons is by far the best choice. Without it, relic collecting gets significantly harder.

Step 4: Other Ways To Get Relics

Missionaries aren’t the only way to acquire relics. You can also:

  • Explore Goody Huts – Some of these contain relics, assuming no one else looted them first.

  • Make Choices in Narrative Events – Occasionally, story events will reward relics for the right decision.

  • Research Certain Civics – Some civics unlock relics, including:

    • Society II

    • Social Class II

    • Sovereignty II

    • Imperialism II

Step 5: Displaying Relics

Collecting relics is nice, but they don’t do much sitting in your inventory. To actually benefit from them, you need to display them in special buildings:

  • Palace – Your capital always has room for a relic.

  • Temples – Each one has slots for relics.

  • Wonders – Some wonders, like the House of Wisdom and Hale o Keawe, provide extra relic slots.

If your civilization turns into a full-blown religious artifact museum, congratulations—you’re well on your way to winning through culture and faith.

Final Blurb

With the right belief system and a horde of missionaries, you can turn Civilization 7 into a relic-collecting expedition.

Now get out there and start converting—those relics aren’t going to collect themselves!
