Gears of War E-Day Best Class for Horde Tier List

The four Horde Siege classes in Gears of War: E-Day are balanced around very different jobs, which makes ranking them less about raw weapon damage and more about what each class can do when a mission starts falling apart. Horde Siege also puts your four-player squad into a much larger battle with other squads, so healing, objective control, survivability, and the ability to recover from bad situations carry more weight here than they do in a standard multiplayer tier list.

What Is the Best Horde Class in Gears of War: E-Day?

Medic is the best overall Horde Siege class in Gears of War: E-Day. Its Stim Vaporizer can heal and revive nearby players, including downed Gears from other squads, while the class also gets faster health regeneration and enough offensive capability that choosing Medic does not mean giving up your ability to fight.

Breacher is a very close second and is actually my preferred choice if you are relying on yourself to carry a public squad. Adrenaline Injector gives Breacher the survivability to push into situations that would immediately punish the other classes, making it the strongest combination of damage, independence, and emergency playmaking.

S Tier: Medic, Breacher
A Tier: Assault
B Tier: Marksman

Best Overall: Medic
Best for Solo Queue: Breacher
Best for Beginners: Assault
Best for Boss Damage: Marksman

That B Tier does not mean Marksman is weak. In the hands of someone consistently landing critical hits, it can move much higher. I am ranking the classes here by how reliably they contribute across an entire Horde Siege mission, including objectives, chaotic fights, revives, bad positioning, and extraction rather than by theoretical damage output alone.

Gears of War: E-Day Horde Class Tier List

My Horde Siege rankings are based on five things: survivability, damage, team utility, objective value, and how badly the class is punished when something goes wrong.

That last category matters more than it sounds. Horde Siege is not a firing-range damage test. Your squad can get split, an objective can be overrun, someone can go DBNO at the wrong time, or a high-priority enemy can force you out of your ideal position. A class that keeps providing value through those situations is more useful over the course of a full mission.

This is also why my Horde rankings are different from how I would rank the same four classes for Versus.

1. Medic — S Tier

Medic takes the top spot because no other class changes the margin for error of an entire Horde Siege group as much.

The Stim Vaporizer heals Gears within its range and can revive downed players without forcing the Medic to manually expose themselves for every recovery. More importantly in Horde Siege's larger battles, that utility is not limited strictly to your own four-player squad. The Medic can also help players from other squads sharing the battlefield.

That gives Medic value whether your group is dominating or barely hanging on. When everything is going well, you are keeping everyone topped up and contributing damage. When everything goes badly, you have one of the strongest tools available for preventing a failed encounter from turning into a wipe.

Best For: High difficulty, organized squads, revives, and overall team consistency
Tactical Gear: Stim Vaporizer
Biggest Strength: Can reverse fights that other classes would simply lose
Biggest Weakness: A poorly timed Stim Vaporizer leaves a much less forgiving cooldown window

Medic also has faster health regeneration, so it is not as helpless on its own as the word "Medic" might imply. That combination is what pushes it above a traditional support class for me.

If you only plan to heavily invest in one Horde Siege class initially, Medic is the safest choice.

2. Breacher — S Tier

Breacher is the best Horde Siege class when you want to make things happen yourself rather than wait for the rest of the squad.

Its Adrenaline Injector restores health while also reducing incoming damage, allowing Breacher to occupy dangerous parts of the battlefield that are much harder for Marksman or Assault to survive in. The class also gets better resistance against melee damage and status effects, which fits the exact situations where Horde Siege becomes the most dangerous.

What separates Breacher from the other damage-oriented options is that its offense and survivability feed into the same job. You are supposed to move toward the problem.

That makes Breacher particularly strong in public groups. A Medic becomes more valuable as the team cooperates around them, while Breacher can still create value when everyone else is doing their own thing.

Best For: Solo queue, aggressive players, frontline fights, and recovering objectives
Tactical Gear: Adrenaline Injector
Biggest Strength: Best self-sufficiency of the four classes
Biggest Weakness: Aggression can quickly turn into feeding if you push beyond your Injector window

The main mistake with Breacher is assuming its durability makes you immortal. The class is strongest when you use Adrenaline to take calculated risks, not when you permanently stand in the middle of the Locust army.

For an experienced Gears player who does not want their Horde performance dictated by random teammates, I could easily justify choosing Breacher over Medic.

3. Assault — A Tier

Assault is probably the easiest Horde Siege class to recommend to a new player, even though I do not think it is the strongest class once everyone knows what they are doing.

The class is built around flexible mid-range combat and gets increased damage while fighting from cover. Its Sonic Disruptor can stun groups of approaching enemies, which becomes particularly useful when Locust are collapsing onto a defensive position or objective.

There is very little setup required to understand what Assault wants to do: find good cover, shoot what is approaching, and use the Sonic Disruptor when the team needs breathing room.

Best For: Beginners, objective defense, mid-range fighting, and flexible squad slots
Tactical Gear: Sonic Disruptor
Biggest Strength: Consistent value without demanding a specialized playstyle
Biggest Weakness: Does not dominate one role as completely as the other classes

I rank Assault above Marksman for the average Horde Siege player because its value survives imperfect play. Missing a few shots does not fundamentally break the class, and a well-placed stun can still rescue a defensive position even if your personal damage is not exceptional.

Assault is therefore the class I would recommend if Horde Siege is your first experience with E-Day multiplayer. If you are still dialing in your aim, our best Gears of War: E-Day controller settings also give you a strong starting point for sensitivity and dead zones.

4. Marksman — B Tier

Marksman has the highest argument for moving dramatically up this list depending on who is playing it.

The class is built around precision damage and receives improved critical-hit damage. Its Pulse Drone can also reveal Locust targets to the squad, giving Marksman actual team utility instead of making it nothing more than a sniper sitting at the back.

The problem is consistency.

Horde Siege does not always let you remain in an ideal firing position. Objectives move, enemies close distance, teammates pull fights in different directions, and the larger battlefield can quickly turn what looked like a clean sightline into a close-range scramble.

When that happens, Marksman is more dependent on the player's positioning and accuracy than any other class.

Best For: Precision players, boss damage, priority targets, and coordinated squads
Tactical Gear: Pulse Drone
Biggest Strength: Exceptional damage when critical hits are consistent
Biggest Weakness: Least forgiving class when aim or positioning breaks down

This is why I have Marksman in B Tier rather than simply putting every damage class next to each other. The ranking represents reliability, not maximum ceiling.

If you are an excellent sniper player, ignore the letter next to Marksman. Consistently deleting dangerous enemies before they pressure the squad can provide S-Tier value. If you are missing those shots, however, Medic, Breacher, and Assault all have tools that continue contributing regardless.

Which Horde Siege Class Should You Play?

The overall tier list only tells part of the story. Your best class can change depending on what you actually want to do in Horde Siege.

I want the strongest overall class: Medic
I mostly play with random players: Breacher
I am new to Gears: Assault
I want to play aggressively: Breacher
I want to support my squad: Medic
I have very good aim: Marksman
I want to kill bosses and dangerous targets: Marksman
I want a class that works almost anywhere: Assault
I am pushing higher Horde difficulties: Medic

There is also a progression reason to eventually become comfortable with all four. The Siege Specialist achievement requires you to reach max level with Assault, Breacher, Marksman, and Medic, so completionists cannot permanently stick to a single class. Our Gears of War: E-Day achievements guide covers that requirement alongside the other Horde Siege, Campaign, and Versus achievements.

Best Horde Siege Squad Composition

For a normal four-player squad, I would actually start with one of every class rather than stacking whatever currently sits at the top of the tier list.

Medic: Healing and recovery
Breacher: Frontline pressure and emergency pushes
Assault: Mid-range damage and crowd control
Marksman: Priority-target and boss damage

That setup gives the squad answers at every range without asking one player to compensate for a missing role. Breacher can occupy enemies up front, Assault controls pressure around the objective, Marksman removes dangerous targets from distance, and Medic keeps the entire setup functioning when someone gets caught.

If I were going to double up on a class, the choice would depend on the mission rather than following a universal two-Medic or two-Breacher rule. A difficult survival-focused run makes another Medic much more attractive, while a fight with clear sightlines and a dangerous boss can make a second strong Marksman more valuable.

That is also why the tier list should not be read as "four Marksmen are bad because Marksman is B Tier." Horde Siege was designed around classes complementing each other, and individual player skill can completely change the value of a particular pick.

For most players, though, the simplest answer remains Medic. It contributes in every type of encounter, improves the survivability of everyone around it, and has an emergency tool capable of saving fights after things have already gone wrong. Breacher is the better choice if you want more individual agency, Assault is the easiest class to learn Horde Siege with, and Marksman has the highest upside for players who can consistently turn precision damage into dead Locust.
