Minecraft Dungeons 2 Best Weapons: Melee & Ranged

Minecraft Dungeons 2 doesn't have one weapon that wins every comparison: Pride of the Plains excels at focused melee damage, War Hammer shines when heavy attacks and Lightning Surge are optimized, Redstone Wrecker abuses its one-hit combo for repeated wave effects, and Greatbow leads ranged burst. The better way to choose a weapon is to match its attack pattern and Unique effect to the job you actually need it to perform.

Best Minecraft Dungeons 2 Weapons at a Glance

I wouldn't force these into a universal S-to-D list because several of the strongest weapons are doing completely different jobs.

Best Weapons by Job
• Bosses and elites: Pride of the Plains
• Heavy melee: War Hammer
• Repeated wave damage: Redstone Wrecker
• Fast single-target melee: Twilight Dagger
• Heavy AoE alternative: Heartbreaker
• Maximum ranged burst: Greatbow / Humbler Heartstring
• Sustained heavy crossbow: Heavy Crossbow
• Point-blank ranged damage: The Close Ranger

Those picks make more sense when you separate weapon performance from the test used to measure it.

Why Weapon DPS Numbers Can Look Completely Different

Current Minecraft Dungeons 2 weapon testing uses at least two very different measurements, and mixing them together creates misleading rankings.

Base DPS calculations use weapon damage and exact attack timing. Under that method, Twilight Dagger reaches 51.9 DPS, Pride of the Plains reaches 51.1, War Hammer reaches 41.6, and Heartbreaker also reaches 41.6.

Separate Level 101 training-dummy testing used each weapon's strongest technique with Lightning Surge III equipped. Under those conditions, War Hammer reportedly reached 500 DPS, Mace reached 420 through jumping attacks, and Short Spear reached 414.

What Each Number Actually Tells You
• Base DPS: How quickly the weapon's natural combo damages one target
• Enchanted testing: How well the weapon works inside a specific optimized setup
• Attack coverage: How many enemies a swing can realistically hit
• Unique effect: Extra value that may not appear in the base DPS calculation
• Attack pattern: Determines how often effects tied to jumps, hits, or combo finishers can trigger

A weapon can therefore lose a base-DPS comparison and still outperform the winner inside the right build.

Pride of the Plains Is the Best Boss-Focused Melee Weapon

Pride of the Plains is the weapon I'd prioritize when the goal is concentrating damage into one elite or boss.

Its measured base DPS is already 51.1, which places it near the top of the current melee data. More importantly, its Unique effect makes melee attacks deal 40% more damage to the primary target, and that bonus isn't included in the 51.1 DPS figure.

Pride of the Plains
• Measured base DPS: 51.1
• +40% melee damage against primary targets
• Excellent against bosses and elites
• Strong without requiring a complicated trigger
• Pairs naturally with direct melee bonuses

That fixed primary-target bonus is the reason I'd take it over simply chasing whichever weapon has the highest unmodified attack-speed calculation.

War Hammer Is the Best Weapon for Heavy Burst

War Hammer sacrifices speed for extremely strong individual attacks, and optimized testing suggests the tradeoff can be worth it.

Its base single-target DPS is 41.6, which is already one of the strongest heavy-weapon results. In separate Level 101 testing with Lightning Surge III, War Hammer produced a reported 500 DPS.

War Hammer Strengths
• 41.6 measured base DPS
• 500 DPS reported in optimized Lightning Surge III testing
• High-impact individual attacks
• Strong fit for jump attacks and amplified-hit mechanics
• Best when you can reliably create safe attack windows

The main cost is commitment. Missing with a fast dagger isn't nearly as punishing as wasting a slow War Hammer swing, so mobility and positioning matter more here.

Redstone Wrecker Is the Most Interesting Crowd-Clear Weapon

Redstone Wrecker stands out because its attack sequence changes how you can build around final-hit mechanics.

The weapon has a one-hit combo, meaning each normal swing immediately reaches the combo's final attack. Its own modifier also creates a powerful fire wave on every hit.

Why Redstone Wrecker Is Different
• Only one attack in its combo
• Every attack is effectively the combo finisher
• Built-in fire wave adds area pressure
• Works especially well when enemies are grouped together
• Naturally supports final-hit and wave-based setups

That's more valuable than a simple damage number suggests. The weapon's combo structure lets you repeatedly exploit effects that would normally wait until the end of a longer sequence.

The Minecraft Dungeons 2 best builds guide includes endgame setups built around those kinds of repeatable weapon interactions.

Twilight Dagger Is the Best Pure Fast Melee Option

Twilight Dagger currently has the highest measured base DPS among the light melee weapons in the supplied data at 51.9.

That number comes with one major limitation: its attacks cover a very narrow angle.

Twilight Dagger
• 51.9 measured base DPS
• Extremely fast pressure against one target
• Narrow attack cone
• Weaker at independently clearing surrounding mobs
• Benefits from separate AoE through Artifacts or enchantments

I'd use Twilight Dagger when the rest of the loadout already has a way to handle groups. Let the weapon specialize in shredding one target instead of forcing it to cover every combat situation.

Heartbreaker Is the Heavy Weapon for Players Who Still Want AoE

Heartbreaker shares War Hammer's 41.6 measured base DPS, but the Unique version adds explosions on impact.

That gives it a different use even though their underlying DPS is identical in the base calculation.

Heartbreaker
• 41.6 measured base DPS
• Heavy attacks explode on impact
• Adds area damage without abandoning heavy melee
• Better suited to grouped enemies than raw single-target testing implies

I'd lean toward Heartbreaker when ordinary packs are giving you more trouble than isolated bosses.

Greatbow Has the Highest Ranged Burst Damage

Greatbow is the standout when you care about dumping as much ranged damage as possible into a short window.

Its current calculated burst DPS is 180, based on 72 damage per shot with 0.4 seconds between shots. Humbler Heartstring shares that same underlying 180 burst figure.

Greatbow
• 180 calculated burst DPS
• 72 damage per shot
• 0.4 seconds between shots
• 10 documented ammo
• Excellent during short boss damage windows

The limitation is ammunition. Greatbow can unload extremely quickly, which means its burst number shouldn't be mistaken for endlessly sustainable damage.

Humbler Heartstring adds another useful dimension by retaining the Greatbow profile while providing a Unique piercing effect against multiple enemies.

The Close Ranger Is the Best Ranged Weapon if You Fight Like a Melee Character

The Close Ranger takes the Heavy Crossbow's 113.7 calculated burst DPS and adds a Unique effect that increases ranged attack damage by 100% at close range.

That means the correct playstyle is almost the opposite of a normal bow build.

The Close Ranger
• 113.7 calculated base burst DPS
• Unique Heavy Crossbow
• +100% ranged damage at close range
• Rewards aggressive positioning
• Particularly compatible with roll-focused setups

If you already like rolling through attacks and fighting directly in front of enemies, this is one of the few ranged weapons that actively rewards that behavior instead of asking you to create distance.

Heavy Crossbow Gives Up Burst for More Deliberate Shots

Heavy Crossbow also reaches 113.7 calculated burst DPS, using 108-damage shots with 0.95 seconds between attacks.

It doesn't have Greatbow's 180 burst ceiling, but the slower firing cadence makes it feel less like emptying a magazine and more like choosing each shot.

Heavy Crossbow
• 113.7 calculated burst DPS
• 108 damage per shot
• 0.95 seconds between shots
• 8 documented ammo
• Better suited to deliberate ranged pressure

Mace, Short Spear, and Awesomeaxe Are Worth Watching Too

Mace and Short Spear deserve attention because both performed extremely well in the separate Level 101 Lightning Surge III tests.

Mace reportedly reached 420 DPS when using jump attacks, while Short Spear reached 414. Awesomeaxe was also placed in the highest melee group from those tests.

I wouldn't directly rank those numbers above Pride of the Plains' 51.1 or Twilight Dagger's 51.9 because they aren't measuring the same thing. The first set includes an optimized enchantment and combat technique, while the second isolates the weapons' base attack timing.

Short Spear is particularly difficult to compare because its exact attack timing wasn't considered reliable enough for inclusion in one of the base-DPS datasets.

A Weapon Becomes Much Better When Its Trigger Matches the Build

This is where weapon choice starts mattering more than a tier position.

Lightning Surge creates a damage wave from jump attacks and final melee hits. A weapon that reaches its finisher rapidly can exploit that differently from a long combo. Thundering has a chance to trigger on attacks, so very fast weapons generate more opportunities for it to activate. Crash Landing specifically rewards jump attacks, which increases the value of weapons you're comfortable using from the air.

The Minecraft Dungeons 2 Enchantments guide has the full effects and Tier I–III scaling if you're matching an enchantment to a specific weapon.

What Weapon Should You Actually Keep?

Don't replace a weapon solely because another drop has a slightly higher damage number. Look at what you'd be giving up with it.

Keep the Weapon If...
• Its Unique effect directly supports your build
• Its attack pattern triggers your enchantments efficiently
• Its range or attack coverage fixes a problem your other equipment doesn't
• Your Talismans already amplify that weapon type
• Replacing it would break an interaction you use constantly

If you're still assembling your equipment, the Minecraft Dungeons 2 best early game builds guide focuses on smaller gear cores that don't require a finished inventory. The Minecraft Dungeons 2 Talismans guide also covers the passive bonuses that can change which weapon fits your character best.

For me, that's the better way to evaluate Minecraft Dungeons 2 weapons: use DPS to understand what a weapon is capable of, then use its attack pattern, Unique effect, and build interactions to decide whether that damage actually translates to the fights you're trying to win.
