Permafrost How Many Players Can Play?

Permafrost can be played alone or with a small group, and you do not need a full party to experience the survival game. Multiplayer simply lets additional survivors join the same world, so you can choose anything from a solo run to a complete four-person group.

How Many Players Can Play Permafrost?

Permafrost supports a maximum of four players in online co-op. That means you can play alone, with one or two friends, or with three friends for a full four-player group.

Minimum: 1 player
Maximum: 4 players total
Friends you can bring: Up to 3
Co-op: Online

The four-player limit includes you. It is not a host plus four additional players, so a complete group is one player and three friends.

How Four-Player Co-Op Works

Co-op does not change Permafrost into a separate multiplayer mode. You are still exploring the frozen world, building shelter, hunting, gathering resources, crafting, and surviving the same environmental threats, but those jobs can be divided between several people.

That is where the larger group becomes useful. One player can gather materials while another hunts for food, someone else searches buildings, and the fourth handles construction or other objectives. Instead of four people doing the same job faster, the biggest advantage is being able to work on several problems at once.

Inventory space also becomes less restrictive when supplies can be spread across multiple survivors. On longer trips, a group can split tools, food, healing items, and gathered materials instead of forcing one person to carry everything.

Can You Play Permafrost Solo?

Yes. Permafrost can be played entirely solo, so co-op is optional rather than required.

The main difference is workload. A solo player has to handle gathering, food, shelter, crafting, exploration, and combat personally, while a co-op group can divide those jobs.

That does not mean solo is a lesser version of the game. If anything, managing your own supplies and deciding whether another trip is worth the risk gives the survival systems more weight because there is nobody else available to cover a mistake.

Does the Dog Count as a Player?

No. Your dog companion does not count toward the four-player limit.

If you are playing alone with the dog, you are still in a one-player game. Likewise, a full four-person group can still make use of the game's companion systems without turning it into a five-player session.

The dog is useful for things like scouting and carrying supplies, which gives solo players some extra help without replacing the benefits of having another actual survivor in the world.

Do You Need Four Players to Play Permafrost?

No. Any group size from one to four works.

Two-player co-op is probably the biggest jump from solo because the workload can immediately be divided between two people. One player can gather or build while the other hunts or explores, which cuts down a lot of backtracking without completely removing the pressure of managing limited supplies.

Three or four players make larger expeditions and base projects more efficient, but they also mean more people consuming food and other resources. A larger party gives you more labor and carrying capacity, not unlimited supplies.

Solo: Most survival pressure and full control
2 players: Easy division of survival jobs
3 players: More specialization and carrying capacity
4 players: Maximum group size and fastest task splitting

So if your main question is whether your group can all play together, Permafrost supports up to four people in the same co-op game, with solo play available whenever you want to survive on your own.
