In Path of Exile 2 (PoE2), the Catalyst is a Breach-exclusive currency item. It increases the quality of rings and amulets, improving specific modifiers (depending on the type) that are key to your build. This makes Catalysts extremely valuable for enhancing jewelry that provides critical bonuses.

Here’s a guide to understanding, getting, and using the Catalyst.

What Is a Catalyst?

What it does: Increases the quality of rings and amulets, boosting specific modifiers on the item.

Why it’s useful: Higher quality on jewelry improves stats like resistances, attributes, or damage modifiers, which can greatly benefit your character’s survivability and performance.

For example:

  • A ring with 10% fire resistance will gain additional fire resistance when quality is added.

  • An amulet with +10 Strength will receive a slight bonus to the Strength value.

How to Get a Catalyst

1. Drops from Breach Events

Catalysts are exclusive to Breach events, where you fight hordes of monsters in alternate dimensions. These events often drop Breach-exclusive loot, including Catalysts.

2. Trade

Catalysts can be traded with other players for currency or other valuable items. If you don’t want to farm Breach events, trading is a reliable way to obtain them.

How to Use a Catalyst

  1. Right-click the Catalyst in your inventory.

  2. Left-click on a ring or amulet to apply it.

  3. The item’s quality will increase, improving its modifiers.

Note:

  • You can increase quality up to a maximum of 20%.

  • The type of modifiers that benefit from quality depends on the item’s stats.

When to Use a Catalyst

Upgrading Key Jewelry

  • Use Catalysts on rings and amulets with modifiers that are important for your build, such as resistances, attributes, or elemental damage.

Endgame Crafting

  • Catalysts are best used on rare or high-quality jewelry that already has excellent modifiers.

Tips for Using a Catalyst

  • Save for Strong Bases: Don’t use Catalysts on low-level or temporary rings and amulets. Focus on high-tier gear.

  • Stack Modifiers: If you need more of a specific stat, increase the quality of items that already have that bonus.

  • Combine with Other Crafting: Catalysts can be used before additional crafting to make strong jewelry even better.
