AION 2 Faction Differences Asmodians vs Elyos: Which to Choose

Choosing between Elyos and Asmodians is one of the first major decisions you make in AION 2, and it affects far more than the color of your wings. Both factions have access to the same combat options and character power, but they experience different regions, stories, characters, visual themes, and faction-specific versions of certain equipment names. Since your choice cannot simply be swapped later on the same character, it is worth knowing which differences actually matter before committing.

What Are the Differences Between Elyos and Asmodians in AION 2?

The main differences between Elyos and Asmodians are their storylines, starting regions, world design, characters, faction identity, default Daeva Wing colors, and the names used for some crafted equipment. Their actual combat potential is effectively equal: neither faction receives exclusive classes, stronger versions of equipment, better character creation options, or a built-in statistical advantage.

Elyos: Brighter high-fantasy regions, a more traditionally heroic storyline, and white Daeva Wings.
Asmodians: Darker and harsher regions, a heavier story centered around survival, revenge, and betrayal, and black Daeva Wings.
Gameplay power: The same classes, skills, character options, and equivalent equipment are available to both factions.

The important distinction is therefore not which faction is stronger. It is which version of AION 2's world you want to spend your early and mid-game experience in.

Do Elyos and Asmodians Play Differently?

No. Elyos and Asmodians have access to all eight classes, and choosing a faction does not lock you out of a particular class or give you a superior version of one. Skills and the core character advancement systems are also the same between the two sides.

Character creation is shared as well. Unlike the stronger visual differences associated with the factions in the original AION, AION 2 does not give Asmodian and Elyos characters separate sets of faces, hairstyles, body options, or other fundamental appearance restrictions.

This makes faction choice much less of a min-max decision than it might initially appear. You do not need to choose Elyos because you want to play a specific class, nor do you need to pick Asmodians for a particular combat advantage.

There is one small equipment presentation difference worth knowing about. Equivalent crafted weapons and armor can use different names depending on your faction. An Elyos item and its Asmodian counterpart may therefore have different prefixes despite sharing the same stats, crafting materials, recipes, enhancement systems, and attached abilities.

Elyos vs Asmodians Story Differences

The two factions follow genuinely different main stories rather than simply experiencing the same quests from opposite sides.

The Elyos opening places you alongside the Dawn Legion after your character is rescued, quickly establishing you as part of a larger organized force. Its early story leans toward cooperation, military duty, and a more conventional heroic fantasy structure. As the campaign develops, however, some of the people around you begin making increasingly questionable decisions, so the Elyos storyline is not simply a spotless good-versus-evil adventure.

The Asmodian opening is considerably harsher. After being rescued by a mercenary, you initially have to make your own way through a nearby settlement before events take a darker turn. The broader Asmodian storyline puts more emphasis on revenge, grim determination, betrayal, and characters operating in a world where trust is harder to come by.

If story tone matters to you, this may actually be a more meaningful faction difference than combat. Elyos generally delivers the brighter heroic fantasy experience, while Asmodians lean harder into AION 2's darker side.

Elyos vs Asmodians Map and Region Differences

Each faction begins in a completely different part of the world. Elyos players primarily experience Verteron and Eltnen, while Asmodians begin their journey through Altgard and Morheim.

Elyos territory uses a brighter high-fantasy aesthetic, with colorful vegetation, rivers, waterfalls, magical landscapes, and architecture that feels more elegant and pristine. Verteron in particular has a relatively compact feel, with several distinct environments packed into the same region and plenty of vertical terrain to explore.

Asmodian territory takes the opposite approach. Altgard and the surrounding regions feature craggy terrain, scorched ground, canyons, volcanic elements, and a much more subdued color palette. The environment can still be visually impressive, but it aims for harsh and dramatic rather than idyllic.

This is one area where screenshots do not tell the entire story. Elyos territory tends to work better if you enjoy simply existing in a colorful fantasy world, while Asmodian zones often create stronger dramatic backdrops and a more hostile sense of place. The latter also fits the tone of the Asmodian storyline much more closely.

Do Elyos and Asmodians Have Different Wings?

Yes. The standard Daeva Wings earned through Ascension differ between the factions. Elyos receive white Wings, while Asmodians receive black Wings.

This distinction applies to the faction-associated Wings earned through the game's main advancement path. Cosmetic Wing skins obtained through other means are not universally restricted to the same white-versus-black split, so choosing Asmodians does not mean every Wing cosmetic you can ever equip must be black, nor are Elyos permanently restricted to white cosmetics.

If one of the default faction Wing styles is substantially more appealing to you, however, it is a reasonable factor to consider because those Wings form part of each faction's visual identity throughout the game.

Can You Visit the Other Faction's Map in AION 2?

Yes. Your faction determines your normal world and storyline, but it does not permanently prevent you from seeing the opposing faction's territory.

Later in the story, Spacetime Rifts allow you to enter regions belonging to the other faction. These trips can also expose you to content located on those maps, including Strongholds, field bosses, essence extraction activities, and Pet Souls.

This makes the map decision slightly less restrictive than it first appears. Choosing Asmodians does not mean you will never set foot in the colorful Elyos regions, and choosing Elyos does not completely lock away Asmodian territory. What changes is which world serves as your home faction experience and which storyline you follow through it.

Can You Change Factions in AION 2?

No. Once a character is created for Elyos or Asmodians, that character cannot later be transferred over to the opposing faction's server. The faction choice for that character is permanent.

You are not permanently locking your entire account into one side, though. AION 2 allows you to create up to eight free characters, split between four Elyos characters and four Asmodian characters. That means you can experience both stories without deleting your original character or paying simply to try the other faction.

This also makes creating a secondary character a good way to experience the other campaign later rather than treating faction choice as a decision that prevents you from ever seeing half of the game.

Should You Choose Elyos or Asmodians in AION 2?

Choose Elyos if you prefer colorful high-fantasy environments, a somewhat more heroic and cooperative story tone, white Ascension Wings, and regions such as Verteron and Eltnen. Choose Asmodians if you prefer darker environments, a more serious storyline built around revenge and betrayal, black Ascension Wings, and the harsher atmosphere of Altgard and Morheim.

There is no meaningful combat reason to choose one over the other. Your class options and power potential remain comparable, so the better choice is the faction whose world you actually want to inhabit.

Your friends should be part of that decision as well. If you are starting together and want to experience the same open-world campaign, choosing the same faction is the simplest option. AION 2 does support cross-faction matchmaking for applicable PvE content, but that does not turn Elyos and Asmodians into one shared questing faction. For more on grouping, see our AION 2 How to Play With Friends guide.

If you are still undecided after comparing the mechanics, I would make the choice based on three things in order: which faction your friends are using, which world you prefer looking at, and which story tone sounds more appealing. Since classes and combat power are shared, those differences will affect your actual experience far more than chasing an advantage that does not exist.
