Dressmaker: How to Sell Fabric & Can You Sell It Back?
Buying the wrong fabric or accidentally ordering more material than you need can leave a lot of money sitting unused in Dressmaker. There is a way to turn extra fabric back into money, but it does not work like a normal shop refund or sell-back system.

Can You Sell Fabric in Dressmaker?
You cannot directly sell unused fabric back to the shop in Dressmaker. There is currently no normal refund or sell-back option that lets you return a fabric bolt for coins after purchasing it.
You can still recover the value of unwanted fabric by using it to make an Off the Rack dress and selling the finished garment. This is the main workaround if you accidentally buy the wrong fabric, purchase too much, or simply want to clear out material you no longer need.

How to Sell Fabric in Dressmaker
To effectively sell unwanted fabric, use it to create an Off the Rack dress and then sell the completed dress. You do not need to abandon your current commission to do this, since Off the Rack designs can be created separately through the sketchbook.
Open the sketchbook and look for the plus tab near the top-left area. Create a new Off the Rack design, choose a simple pattern that uses the fabric you want to get rid of, cut and sew the dress, then sell the finished garment.
This does not return the original fabric purchase directly, but the money earned from the completed dress can offset the cost of the material and may recover more than simply receiving a partial refund would.
Use Off the Rack Dresses to Recover Fabric Costs
Off the Rack dresses are especially useful when an accidental fabric purchase leaves you short on money for a commission. Instead of restarting or wasting the material, turn the excess into a small dress and sell it before continuing with your current order.
Players have found that compact designs work well for this because they use less material and are faster to complete. One community example is a corset bodice with a pencil skirt, which can reportedly fit within roughly one meter of fabric when the pattern pieces are packed efficiently.
Your earnings also depend on the completed garment rather than the raw fabric alone, so good construction and efficient use of material can help you recover more of the money you originally spent.
If you are still getting used to the cutting table, the Dressmaker how to cut fabric guide covers pattern placement, the scissors tool and common cutting problems.
When Do Off the Rack Dresses Unlock?
Off the Rack dresses unlock fairly early in Dressmaker. Players report gaining access around the first act, roughly when Prudence's first commission becomes available.
Once unlocked, look near the top-left of the sketchbook for the plus-shaped tab or bookmark used to start another design. You can create an Off the Rack dress there even while another commission is active.
If you do not see the option yet, continue the early commissions until the feature becomes available rather than assuming your sketchbook is missing something.
What Should You Do If You Bought the Wrong Fabric?
If you bought the wrong material for a commission, you generally have two practical options: keep it for a future dress or turn it into an Off the Rack garment and sell that instead.
The same approach works when you accidentally purchase too much fabric. Rather than leaving the extra material unused, build a smaller dress around what you already own and convert it back into usable coins through the finished garment.
This is also why it is worth checking how much fabric you need before buying large quantities. There is no direct refund button if you accidentally purchase several extra meters.
Can You Return Fabric If You Bought Too Much?
No. Buying too much fabric does not create a return option afterward. The extra material stays in your inventory until you use it.
If you only have a small amount left, saving it can still be useful because smaller pattern pieces may fit into leftover sections on a future project. If you have enough material for another garment, an Off the Rack dress gives you a way to turn that excess back into coins.
Finish the Dress Before You Can Sell It
The fabric itself cannot be placed directly on the market, so the workaround depends on completing the garment first. Make sure every pattern piece has been collected, all required seams have been sewn and the dress can be finished normally before trying to sell it.
If the game refuses to let you complete the garment, the Dressmaker how to finish a dress guide covers the most common missing fabric pieces and sewing steps that can block completion.
Is There a Direct Fabric Sell-Back Option?
Not currently. Players have specifically requested a way to sell unused fabric back for part of its original cost, but the present workaround is to use that fabric in another dress and sell the completed garment instead.
That means there is no hidden shop menu or button you are overlooking. If you bought the wrong fabric, the material itself cannot be returned; turning it into an Off the Rack dress is the practical way to recover some or all of the money tied up in it.
