Best SMGs in MW4

The VEL 46 and ISO Nightshade are the strongest all-around options for MW4 Multiplayer, but choosing between them comes down to more than fire rate. Magazine capacity, recoil, and how quickly you can move between engagements all matter, especially on maps where fights constantly shift between buildings and open lanes.

Best MW4 SMGs Ranked:
  • 1. VEL 46: Best overall SMG for consistent close-range combat and aggressive movement.
  • 2. ISO Nightshade: Best alternative for fast-paced gameplay and a strong option early in Multiplayer progression.
  • 3. X-58 Nyx: Best stealth SMG for flanking and approaching enemies without revealing your position as easily.
  • 4. PPSh-41: Best for sustained fire and fighting multiple enemies in tight spaces.
  • 5. Wz.55 Striga: Best for players who prefer controlled recoil and a slower firing rhythm.

Why the VEL 46 Is the Best SMG

The VEL 46 offers one of the strongest combinations of mobility and sustained fire among MW4's launch SMGs. It fires at 952 RPM and comes with 40 rounds by default, giving you enough ammunition to challenge multiple enemies without immediately needing a reload.

What makes it particularly useful is how well it responds to attachment upgrades. Improving its recoil and effective range makes the VEL 46 more dependable when an engagement stretches beyond the usual SMG distance. You can keep the weapon mobile without needing to dedicate every attachment slot to handling.

We recommend the VEL 46 for players who frequently move between objectives, challenge enemies around corners, and need a weapon capable of handling unpredictable encounters. It's our preferred all-around SMG rather than a gun built for one specific situation.

ISO Nightshade vs. PPSh-41

The ISO Nightshade is the better choice if you want a versatile SMG that feels responsive during aggressive movement. It fires at 923 RPM, has manageable handling, and becomes considerably more comfortable against multiple opponents once you equip an extended magazine.

The PPSh-41 takes a more specialized approach. With a 1,110 RPM fire rate and 71-round default magazine, it can maintain pressure for longer without reloading. However, that firing speed also makes recoil control more important, particularly when opponents move beyond close range.

For general Multiplayer, we'd choose the ISO Nightshade over the PPSh-41. If you're constantly fighting enemies around the same Hardpoint or inside confined areas, the PPSh-41 becomes much more attractive.

Are the X-58 Nyx and Wz.55 Striga Worth Using?

The X-58 Nyx deserves consideration if you prefer playing around enemy positioning rather than winning every fight through raw aggression. It features an integrated suppressor, a 40-round magazine, and an 800 RPM fire rate, making it suitable for quieter flanking routes and controlled engagements.

The Wz.55 Striga is the most distinct alternative. Its 651 RPM fire rate is considerably slower, but it offers strong recoil control and mobility. The main drawback is its 25-round magazine, which gives you less flexibility when encountering multiple enemies.

Neither would be our first recommendation for a general-purpose SMG class, but both have clear advantages for players who prefer more deliberate engagements.

MW4 Best SMG Loadouts and Builds

The best SMG builds in MW4 should address a weapon's weaknesses without removing what makes it effective in close quarters. That means prioritizing recoil control on faster weapons, extending range where practical, and avoiding unnecessary attachments that slow down your reactions.

We've selected three different builds rather than forcing every SMG into the same setup. The VEL 46 focuses on consistency, the ISO Nightshade prioritizes aggressive handling, and the PPSh-41 is designed for sustained close-range pressure.

Best VEL 46 Loadout – All-Around Multiplayer

Our VEL 46 build focuses on maintaining control while moving between short and medium-range engagements. Rather than adding a larger magazine or optic, we're using the five available attachment slots to improve handling, recoil, and effective range.

Best VEL 46 Attachments:
  • Muzzle: TA TACPRO-56
  • Barrel: VB-46 Series 11
  • Underbarrel: FSS Fireline Grip
  • Stock: VEL 46 Extended
  • Laser: XRK Clutch-LS

The VB-46 Series 11 is one of the most important attachments in this setup. It improves damage range, bullet velocity, and recoil control, allowing the VEL 46 to perform more consistently when enemies aren't directly in front of you.

We pair that with the TA TACPRO-56 and FSS Fireline Grip to further stabilize the weapon. The VEL 46 Extended stock supports the gun's mobility-focused role, while the XRK Clutch-LS improves aiming responsiveness.

The reason we'd keep the standard magazine is simple: 40 rounds are already enough for many Multiplayer encounters. Adding more ammunition would mean sacrificing an attachment that could improve how quickly or accurately you fight.

Best attachment to prioritize: Start with the VB-46 Series 11 barrel. It gives the build greater flexibility beyond point-blank range, which is particularly valuable if you're using the VEL 46 as your main weapon across different maps.

If you're struggling more with recoil than movement, consider replacing the stock with the V46 R-Skel Grip. This shifts the build toward steadier sustained fire, although you'll give up some of the mobility benefits from your original setup.

Best ISO Nightshade Loadout – Aggressive SMG Build

For the ISO Nightshade, we'd take a slightly different approach. Its fast fire rate and responsive handling are already strong, so the priority is improving ammunition capacity and keeping the weapon dependable when pushing several enemies in quick succession.

Best ISO Nightshade Attachments:
  • Muzzle: FSS Crackdown
  • Underbarrel: FSS Fireline Grip
  • Rear Grip: Demo STP-1
  • Magazine: 40 Round Mag
  • Laser: XRK Clutch-LS

The 40 Round Mag is the defining attachment here. Increasing the Nightshade's capacity from 30 to 40 rounds gives you more room for missed shots, unexpected opponents, and situations where reloading would leave you exposed.

The FSS Crackdown provides suppression, while the FSS Fireline Grip helps keep recoil manageable during longer bursts. Demo STP-1 and XRK Clutch-LS round out the setup with handling benefits that support aggressive play.

Unlike the VEL 46 build, we're not dedicating a slot to a longer barrel. This version is intended for players who spend most of their time pushing buildings and taking close-range fights, where responsiveness and ammunition capacity matter more than extending the weapon's reach.

Best attachment to prioritize: Unlock the 40 Round Mag first if you regularly run out of ammunition while fighting. It's a practical improvement that you'll notice immediately during consecutive engagements.

For maps with longer sightlines, you can replace the laser with the ZLR Carbon-900 barrel. This gives the ISO Nightshade additional range and control, making it better suited to fights that extend beyond its usual close-quarters role.

Best PPSh-41 Loadout – Close-Range SMG Build

The PPSh-41 already has more ammunition than most players will need for a single gunfight. Instead of building around even longer firing periods, we'd focus on making the weapon faster to handle while keeping its recoil manageable.

Best PPSh-41 Attachments:
  • Barrel: Hanbit Chimmuk-INTR
  • Stock: Hanbit Janggun-H9
  • Magazine: 53 Round Mag
  • Laser: Schlager Visiv-5
  • Optic: ZLR Type C

The Hanbit Chimmuk-INTR improves recoil control and damage range while also providing sound suppression. It's particularly useful for making the PPSh-41 more predictable when firing long bursts.

The Hanbit Janggun-H9 and Schlager Visiv-5 help balance control with aiming responsiveness. Meanwhile, the ZLR Type C provides a clearer sight picture for tracking opponents, which can be helpful when the weapon's rapid fire makes keeping your aim on a moving target more demanding.

We've deliberately chosen the 53 Round Mag instead of the default 71 rounds. The smaller magazine provides handling benefits while still offering enough ammunition for several close-range encounters. This is a worthwhile tradeoff if you want a more responsive PPSh-41 rather than the longest possible firing duration.

If you're primarily playing Hardpoint and expect repeated enemies pushing the same doorway, keeping the default 71-round magazine is also reasonable. In that case, use the freed attachment slot for additional recoil control, such as the FSS Fireline Grip once you've unlocked it.

We wouldn't recommend this build for consistently challenging assault rifles across open sightlines. The PPSh-41 is at its best when you control engagement distance and can force opponents into close quarters.

MW4 Best SMG Class Setups

A good SMG class needs to support the way you approach gunfights. In MW4, movement and stamina are important considerations, and the right perks can make it easier to push objectives, survive consecutive engagements, or approach opponents without attracting attention.

Best SMG Class for Aggressive Multiplayer

This is our preferred class for the VEL 46 or ISO Nightshade. It's designed around winning close-range fights, recovering quickly, and maintaining enough movement to reposition before the next engagement.

Best MW4 SMG Class:
  • Primary Weapon: VEL 46
  • Secondary Weapon: Sang 9mm
  • Perk 1: Quick Fix
  • Perk 2: Blood Rush
  • Perk 3: Battle Hardened
  • Tactical: Flash Grenade
  • Lethal: Sticky Grenade
  • Field Upgrade: Trophy System

Quick Fix triggers health regeneration after eliminating enemies or capturing and holding objectives. This is particularly valuable for SMG players because close-range fights often leave you damaged and vulnerable to the next opponent.

Blood Rush enables Tactical Sprint and restores stamina through kills. Since the class is built around aggressive movement, it's one of the most useful perks for closing distance and quickly repositioning around the map.

Battle Hardened reduces the effects of enemy tactical equipment, helping you remain effective when opponents throw Flash or Concussion Grenades into contested areas.

The Flash Grenade gives you an opening when challenging someone holding an angle, while the Sticky Grenade can force enemies away from cover. Trophy System is especially useful in objective modes where explosives can make holding a position difficult.

I'd keep this perk combination for most standard Multiplayer matches. It provides a balance between movement, survivability, and objective play without making the class dependent on a particular map.

Best SMG Class for Stealth and Flanking

If you prefer the X-58 Nyx, we'd build around avoiding detection rather than constantly taking direct gunfights. Its integrated suppressor already suits quieter movement, so pairing it with stealth-focused perks makes more sense than using the same setup as the VEL 46.

Best Stealth SMG Class:
  • Primary Weapon: X-58 Nyx
  • Secondary Weapon: Sang 9mm
  • Perk 1: Ghost
  • Perk 2: Ninja
  • Perk 3: Tracker
  • Tactical: Snapshot Grenade
  • Lethal: Sticky Grenade
  • Field Upgrade: Portable Radar

Ghost reduces your exposure to enemy reconnaissance equipment, while Ninja makes your footsteps quieter. Tracker helps you follow enemy movement, making it easier to identify flanking opportunities and catch opponents who aren't watching their surroundings.

The Snapshot Grenade provides information before entering an occupied area, while Portable Radar helps you monitor nearby threats. Together, these options favor positioning and awareness over rushing directly into every encounter.

Remember that Ghost, Ninja, and Tracker are progression unlocks, so you won't have the complete stealth class immediately. Quick Fix, Blood Rush, and Battle Hardened are useful alternatives while you're unlocking additional perks.

What Should You Change for Hardpoint and Objective Modes?

For objective-heavy matches, we'd keep Quick Fix and Blood Rush but consider changing your third perk to Scavenger once it's available. This lets you collect ammunition from defeated enemies, which is especially useful when holding a position with a fast-firing SMG.

The PPSh-41 also becomes more appealing in these modes because its larger magazine allows you to challenge consecutive opponents with fewer interruptions. Pair it with a Trophy System when defending objectives that attract frequent grenades.

For most players, the VEL 46 remains our top SMG recommendation in MW4. It handles aggressive movement well without sacrificing too much control, and the recommended build makes it versatile enough for different Multiplayer situations. The ISO Nightshade is the better alternative for players focused on fast close-range engagements, while the PPSh-41 and X-58 Nyx offer more specialized options depending on whether you prefer sustained fire or stealth.
