MW4 How to Show FPS Counter

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 (MW4) has a built-in FPS counter that lets PC players monitor their frame rate during Campaign and Multiplayer. You can turn it on through the game's Interface settings, where it's grouped with other performance indicators under Telemetry. Once enabled, the counter displays your current FPS on-screen without needing an external overlay.

How to Show FPS in MW4

To enable the FPS counter in MW4, open Settings, select Interface, and scroll down to Telemetry under the Global tab. This is where the game keeps its performance monitoring options, including the frame rate display.

MW4 FPS Counter Settings:
  • Launch Modern Warfare 4 on your PC.
  • Click the gear icon in the top-right corner of the main menu.
  • Select Interface to open the interface settings.
  • Make sure you're on the Global tab.
  • Scroll down past the Menu settings until you reach Telemetry.
  • Change the Telemetry preset from All Off to Custom.
  • Open Show More and switch FPS Counter to On.

After enabling it, your FPS should appear in the upper-left corner of the screen during gameplay. The number updates as you play, allowing you to see how your PC handles different areas, combat encounters, and graphics settings. Your selection saves automatically, so there's no need to restart the game.

You don't have to enable every Telemetry option to display your FPS. We recommend leaving the FPS Counter on by itself if you only want to monitor frame rate, since enabling additional hardware statistics can clutter the screen. You can also adjust Telemetry Label Size if the text is difficult to read.

For a more accurate idea of your performance, check the counter during an actual mission or Multiplayer match. Frame rates in menus aren't necessarily representative of what your PC can maintain during gameplay, especially when explosions, effects, and other players are on-screen.

How to Show FPS Through Steam

If you're playing MW4 through Steam, you can also use Steam's built-in Performance Monitor instead of the game's Telemetry display. This is useful if you'd prefer to customize the position of your FPS counter or access additional performance information.

Enable the Steam FPS Counter:
  • Open Steam on your PC.
  • Click Steam in the upper-left corner and select Settings.
  • Navigate to the In Game section.
  • Find the Performance Monitor options.
  • Select the Single FPS Value detail level and choose where you want the counter displayed.
  • Launch MW4 through Steam with the Steam Overlay enabled.

Steam's monitor also supports more detailed FPS information, including minimum and maximum frame rates. If you're using compatible frame generation technology, it can distinguish generated frames from actual game frames, which is helpful when comparing performance settings.

This option is specific to Steam. Players launching MW4 through Battle.net or the Xbox PC app can use the game's own Telemetry settings instead.

MW4 FPS Counter Not Showing Fix

If your FPS counter isn't showing after enabling it, return to Settings → Interface → Global and check the Telemetry configuration. The main Telemetry preset may still be set to All Off, which prevents the individual performance indicators from appearing.

Make sure FPS Counter is enabled under Show More, then return to an active gameplay session to check whether the display appears. If you're using Steam's counter instead, confirm that the Steam Overlay is enabled for MW4.

There's also a difference between an FPS counter that isn't showing and one that's displaying a fixed number. For example, if your FPS consistently stays at 60, check Graphics → Display for V-Sync (Gameplay) and Custom Frame Rate Limit. Either setting can restrict your frame rate even when your PC is capable of producing more frames.

I'd stick with MW4's built-in FPS Counter for everyday gameplay because it doesn't require another overlay. If you're comparing graphics presets or investigating frame drops, Steam's more detailed performance monitoring can provide additional information without having to constantly leave the game.
