MW4 How to Ledge Hang

To ledge hang in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 (MW4), jump toward a climbable ledge and stop pushing forward once your Operator grabs the edge. This lets you remain hanging without completing the mantle. From there, you can move sideways along the ledge, aim at nearby enemies, or climb onto the platform. Ledge hanging also works with certain climbing pipes, giving you more ways to reach elevated positions without exposing yourself immediately.

How to Ledge Hang in MW4

MW4 allows you to interrupt a mantle while climbing certain surfaces, leaving your Operator suspended from the edge. Rooftops, elevated platforms, and climbable pipes are good places to try this, although some shorter obstacles will automatically trigger a normal vault.

How to Perform a Ledge Hang:
  • Find a raised ledge or climbing surface that your Operator can grab.
  • Approach the edge and press your Jump/Mantle button.
  • Release your forward movement input as your Operator grabs the ledge.
  • Remain hanging without completing the climb.
  • Move sideways to reposition, aim from the ledge, or continue climbing when you're ready.

Try approaching the ledge at walking speed when learning the movement. Sprinting directly into an obstacle can carry your Operator through the mantle before you have a chance to stop. A slower approach gives you more control over where the climbing animation ends.

Ledge hanging is useful around elevated objectives because it allows you to check the area above before climbing. If an enemy is watching the rooftop or platform, you can change your position or disengage without committing to the same predictable route.

MW4 Ledge Hang Controls on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox

Ledge hanging uses your regular movement and mantle controls. You don't need to equip a perk or unlock an ability to access it, although your controls may differ if you've customized your button layout.

Default Ledge Hang Controls:
  • PC: Spacebar to jump or mantle, with WASD for movement.
  • PlayStation: X to jump or mantle, with the Left Stick for movement.
  • Xbox: A to jump or mantle, with the Left Stick for movement.
  • Shimmy: Move left or right while hanging from a supported ledge.
  • Aim: Right Mouse Button on PC, L2 on PlayStation, or LT on Xbox.

How to Shimmy While Ledge Hanging

Once you're hanging, use your movement controls to travel sideways along the edge. This is called Hang Shimmy, and it allows you to change your position before climbing or dropping back down.

For example, if an opponent is watching the center of a rooftop, moving toward another section of the ledge gives you a different place to climb up. The available movement depends on the shape of the surface, so certain ledges won't let you travel very far.

How to Aim and Shoot While Hanging

MW4 includes Hang Lean, which allows your Operator to aim and rotate while suspended. Press your normal Aim Down Sights button to adjust your view and line up a shot without fully climbing onto the surface.

A sidearm is especially useful for taking shots from this position. You can check where an enemy is standing, fire when you have a clear opportunity, and then either climb or drop away from the ledge.

I'd avoid staying in the same hanging position after revealing your location. Once an enemy knows where you're suspended, they can watch the edge and make it difficult for you to climb safely.

MW4 Ledge Hang Not Working Fix

If your Operator keeps climbing over obstacles without stopping, start by trying a different surface. Low walls and short pieces of cover often trigger a regular vault, while taller ledges and climbing pipes provide better opportunities for hanging.

You should also check whether your movement settings are automatically initiating mantles. Depending on your configuration, assisted movement can make it harder to control when a climb begins.

What to Try if Ledge Hanging Isn't Working:
  • Change surfaces: Test a taller ledge or climbing pipe rather than a low wall.
  • Release forward movement: Stop pushing toward the platform once your Operator grabs the edge.
  • Approach more slowly: Avoid sprinting directly into the obstacle while practicing.
  • Check Mantle Assist: Try disabling automatic mantle assistance in your movement settings if it's completing climbs unexpectedly.
  • Use the Mobility Course: Practice hanging and climbing transitions without enemies interrupting you.

Can You Ledge Hang on Every Wall?

No. MW4 distinguishes between obstacles designed for quick mantling and surfaces that support additional climbing movement. A short barrier may send your Operator directly over it, while a taller ledge can allow hanging, sideways movement, and aiming.

If you're practicing for a challenge that requires actions while hanging, use a location where your Operator can remain suspended long enough to aim. A regular vault or weapon mount against cover won't count as the same movement.

For the easiest practice, use a climbing pipe or elevated ledge in the Mobility Course. Get comfortable stopping your climb first, then add sideways movement and aiming once you can reliably remain hanging.
