MW4 How to Change Brightness

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 lets you calibrate your display when first launching the game, but finding those brightness settings again can be frustrating. Players returning to the Campaign or Multiplayer after the initial setup may find their screen too dark, with no obvious brightness slider in the settings menu. The adjustment is actually located under SDR Calibration, although players using HDR may need to change their console's display settings instead.

How to Change Brightness in MW4

To change brightness in MW4, open Settings, navigate to Graphics, select Display, and open SDR Calibration. This brings up the brightness calibration sliders used during the game's initial setup, allowing you to adjust the image without restarting your progress.

MW4 Brightness Settings Location:
  • Open the Settings menu in MW4.
  • Select Graphics.
  • Navigate to the Display section.
  • Find SDR Calibration.
  • Open the calibration screen and adjust the brightness sliders.
  • Apply your changes and return to the game.

The setting is labeled SDR Calibration rather than simply Brightness, which explains why it can be difficult to locate. This option is available for standard dynamic range displays, including PC setups and consoles running the game without HDR.

We recommend making small adjustments while checking a darker area of the game. Raising brightness excessively can make shadows appear washed out without necessarily improving enemy visibility. The goal is to make details visible in darker environments while preserving contrast in brighter scenes.

MW4 Brightness Greyed Out Fix

If SDR Calibration is greyed out or unavailable, HDR may be enabled on your system. When MW4 uses HDR, some display adjustments are handled through the console's system settings rather than the game's SDR brightness controls.

Xbox players have reported seeing a message directing them to change brightness at the system level. In that situation, repeatedly searching the in-game Graphics menu won't make the SDR slider available while HDR remains active.

How to Fix Brightness on Xbox

One workaround is to temporarily disable HDR10 through the Xbox display settings. Players have reported that doing so allows MW4 to use its SDR calibration options again.

Xbox Brightness Workaround:
  • Completely close MW4.
  • Open your Xbox Settings.
  • Navigate to General, then TV & Display Options.
  • Open Video Modes and disable Allow HDR10.
  • Relaunch MW4.
  • Return to Graphics → Display → SDR Calibration and adjust your brightness.

This changes the game to SDR rather than fixing HDR brightness itself. If you prefer playing with HDR enabled, we'd recommend keeping HDR active and calibrating your Xbox and television instead of disabling it permanently.

How to Adjust HDR Brightness in MW4

When HDR is enabled, the game's appearance depends partly on your console's HDR calibration and the settings on your television or monitor. This is why two players using identical in-game settings can experience noticeably different brightness levels.

On Xbox, check the console's HDR calibration options under TV & Display Options. On PS5, you can access Adjust HDR through Settings → Screen and Video → Video Output.

Adjusting those system-level settings can help correct an image that appears excessively dark or overly bright without forcing you to switch the game into SDR.

For Nintendo Switch 2 players, the availability of MW4's brightness controls may also depend on the active display mode. If SDR Calibration isn't visible, check the console's display settings and the brightness controls on your television or monitor.

We wouldn't recommend disabling HDR as your first solution if the rest of your games already look correct. Try recalibrating the display first, particularly if MW4's darker environments are the only places where visibility seems unusually poor.

If you're simply trying to find the missing brightness slider, Graphics → Display → SDR Calibration is the place to start. When that option is unavailable, the next step is checking whether HDR has moved brightness control to your console's system settings.
