MW4 How to Use Permanent Unlock Token

Permanent Unlock Tokens in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 let you keep certain weapons, perks, and equipment available even after resetting your level through Classic Prestige. They're particularly valuable for items that would otherwise require hours of progression to unlock again, but the game doesn't automatically apply them when you prestige. You'll need to select an eligible reward yourself, and once you spend a token, there's no way to reverse your decision.

How to Use Permanent Unlock Token in MW4

To use a Permanent Unlock Token in MW4, open Career, select Progression, and navigate to Multiplayer Level Unlocks. Find the item you want to keep permanently, highlight it, and press the Permanent Unlock button displayed at the bottom of the screen.

Permanent Unlock Token Steps:
  • Open the Career menu from the main screen.
  • Select Progression.
  • Navigate to Multiplayer Level Unlocks.
  • Find the weapon, perk, equipment, or Killstreak you want to unlock.
  • Highlight the item and press the displayed Permanent Unlock button.
  • Confirm your selection to spend the token.

Once you've permanently unlocked an item, it remains available through future Classic Prestige resets. You won't need to reach its original Player Level requirement again, even when your rank returns to Level 1.

Make sure you're selecting the correct item before confirming. Permanent Unlock Tokens cannot be refunded, and the game won't allow you to move the unlock to something else afterward.

Best Items to Use Permanent Unlock Tokens On

We recommend spending your first Permanent Unlock Token on a late-level perk, Field Upgrade, or piece of equipment that you use across several classes. These are generally better long-term investments than permanently unlocking a weapon you only occasionally equip.

The strongest choice depends on your regular loadouts, but the principle is to eliminate a restriction that would otherwise affect multiple matches every time you enter Classic Prestige.

Prioritize Late-Level Perks and Equipment

An item that normally unlocks near the end of the 55-level progression track is a strong candidate, particularly if it's something you use in nearly every Multiplayer match.

For example, a favorite perk that supports several weapon classes may be more valuable than a specialized weapon you only use on certain maps. Permanently unlocking that perk allows you to maintain your preferred class setup while progressing through the early levels of another Prestige.

Field Upgrades, tactical equipment, and Killstreaks are also worth considering when their level requirements prevent you from playing the way you prefer.

Avoid Wasting Tokens on Blueprint Weapons

Before using a token on a weapon, check whether you already own an eligible Weapon Blueprint for it.

Weapons unlocked through Store or Battle Pass blueprints remain available through Prestige, even when their normal level requirements haven't been met. If you already have access to a weapon this way, spending a Permanent Unlock Token on its base unlock offers considerably less value.

We'd also avoid using a token simply because an item has a high level requirement. A late-level unlock is only worth preserving if you actually expect to use it regularly.

How to Get More Permanent Unlock Tokens in MW4

Permanent Unlock Tokens are awarded when you enter Classic Prestige. To earn one, complete Player Level 55 and choose Classic Prestige instead of Regular Prestige when beginning your next Prestige.

Each time you choose Classic Prestige, you'll receive another token to spend on an eligible level unlock. This allows you to gradually preserve more of your preferred loadout as you progress through subsequent Prestige levels.

Regular Prestige works differently. Although it also returns your Player Level to 1, it keeps your existing level unlocks available, so you don't receive a Permanent Unlock Token for choosing that route.

If you're deciding between the two systems, our MW4 How to Prestige guide explains the differences and rewards.

Why Can't I Use My Permanent Unlock Token in MW4?

If you can't find the option to spend your token, make sure you're looking under Career → Progression → Multiplayer Level Unlocks rather than the standard Create-a-Class or Gunsmith menu.

The Permanent Unlock prompt appears when you're viewing an eligible item in the progression track, so you won't necessarily see it when selecting the same item elsewhere.

If you don't have a token available, check which Prestige route you selected. Players who choose Regular Prestige won't receive one because that route already preserves their Multiplayer level unlocks.

It's also worth checking whether the item is already permanently available through a Weapon Blueprint or another unlock source. You don't need to spend a token on something you can already use after prestiging.

For most players, we'd save the first token for a useful late-level perk or equipment unlock rather than spending it immediately on the first available weapon. The best Permanent Unlock is something that meaningfully improves your loadouts every time you begin another Classic Prestige, not necessarily the item with the highest unlock requirement.
