Star Wars Galactic Racer What Is Surge
Surge is one of the abilities you can equip in Star Wars Galactic Racer, giving you a temporary speed-focused effect that can last much longer than its initial duration if you keep passing opponents. The catch is that an impact can end the effect early, so when and where you activate it matters.

What Is Surge in Star Wars Galactic Racer?
Surge is an ability that applies the Surging effect to your vehicle for 10 seconds. Overtaking another racer extends how long Surging remains active, while an impact causes you to lose the effect.
This makes Surge different from a simple 10-second ability. If you activate it while moving through a group of racers and continue overtaking them, you can keep extending the effect instead of letting it expire normally.
Ability: Surge
Effect: Grants Surging
Base Duration: 10 seconds
Overtakes: Extend Surging
Impact: Removes Surging
How Does Surge Work?
Once Surge is activated, your vehicle receives Surging for 10 seconds. The ability encourages you to use that window to pass other racers because every overtake adds more time to the effect.
The main limitation is impact. If you hit something while Surging, you lose the effect, which can turn a well-timed activation into only a few seconds of value.
That creates a simple tradeoff. Using Surge around several opponents gives you more opportunities to extend it, but crowded sections also give you more chances to collide with another vehicle or the environment.
When Should You Use Surge?
The best time to activate Surge is when you have multiple racers ahead of you and enough track to start passing them. Instead of using it immediately whenever it becomes available, look for a section where you can turn its initial 10 seconds into a longer run through repeated overtakes.
Using Surge while already far ahead can waste much of its main advantage because there may be nobody available to pass. Likewise, activating it immediately before a difficult corner can be risky if an impact ends the effect before you have extended it.
I would prioritize straights and faster sections where several opponents are within reach. Get Surge active, pass the first racer before the original timer expires, then use each additional overtake to keep the effect going.
If you are struggling to carry speed through turns before setting up those passes, our Star Wars Galactic Racer drifting guide covers how the game's cornering system works.
How to Unlock Surge in Star Wars Galactic Racer
Surge can be unlocked from Ability Packs during a Tour. Hibi's Shop sells an Ability Pack on each planet for 2,500 Credits, and opening one gives you a choice of abilities.
If Surge appears and you have not obtained it yet, selecting it unlocks the ability so you can equip it to your vehicle. Abilities can also occasionally appear as rewards for completing events on the planet map.
Once an ability is already unlocked, upgraded versions can appear in later Ability Packs. This means finding Surge again can improve it rather than simply giving you the same base ability a second time.
Is Surge Worth Using?
Surge is most useful when you are racing through traffic rather than holding an uncontested lead. Its ability to extend through overtakes gives it considerably more potential than its 10-second base duration suggests.
The downside is that you have to preserve the effect. If your route through the pack results in an impact, Surge can disappear before you get much value from it.
That makes Surge a strong choice for players who are comfortable setting up consecutive passes and choosing the right moment to activate it.
