AION 2 Templar Build Guide: PvE, PvP, & Leveling (Global)

Templar is AION 2's shield-based frontline class, combining tanking, pulls, party protection, crowd control, and considerably more damage than a traditional defensive tank. The class revolves around creating short Judgment windows, converting successful Blocks into extra value, and knowing when you can trade some defense for faster clears or stronger burst.

Best Templar Build in AION 2

The best Templar build depends on whether you actually need to tank. While leveling alone, I would drop some of the dedicated Enmity tools and lean into damage, pulls, and Judgment uptime. Group PvE needs Taunt and enough defense to hold a boss comfortably. PvP shifts again toward ranged initiation, Defense reduction, Knockdown and Stun opportunities, and barriers that let you survive after diving into the enemy team.

Leveling Stigmas: Executing Blade, Empyrean Lord's Punishment, Battlefield Banner, Doom Shield
PvE Stigmas: Empyrean Lord's Punishment, Battlefield Banner, Doom Shield, Taunt
PvP Stigmas: Executing Blade, Empyrean Lord's Punishment, Doom Shield, Nezekan's Shield
Weapon: Longsword and Shield

Judgment is the mechanic that ties these setups together. Several Templar abilities create a brief opportunity to use Judgment, and once its cooldown-removal specialization is unlocked you can repeatedly use Judgment while that opportunity remains active. That means good Templar play is less about pressing every ability as soon as it lights up and more about recognizing which skill has opened your next damage window.

If you are choosing between the two heavier melee classes, our AION 2 Gladiator Build Guide covers the more damage-focused alternative, while our AION 2 Best Solo Class guide compares Templar with every other class.

Best AION 2 Templar Leveling Build

Leveling Templar does not need to play like a dungeon tank. Normal quest enemies do not require you to maximize Enmity, so your solo build should trade Taunt for more damage and use Templar's pulls and charges to spend less time running between targets.

Executing Blade is the first Stigma I would bring into the solo setup because it adds another damage tool and lowers enemy Defense. Empyrean Lord's Punishment gives you ranged pressure and Stagger value, Battlefield Banner strengthens your offensive window, and Doom Shield doubles as both an approach tool and a way to open Judgment.

For your normal skills, Judgment, Punishment, Pummel, Shield Smite, Warding Strike, and Vicious Strike are the core I would develop first. Capture and Shield Charge are also extremely useful while questing because getting into melee range quickly matters more when you are moving from pack to pack.

Punishment is your charged hit and becomes much stronger once Skill Speed is added through its specializations. Pummel and its follow-up give you reliable damage between Judgment windows, while Vicious Strike helps maintain MP and can reduce Warding Strike's cooldown with the correct setup.

While leveling, do not spend defensive cooldowns simply because they are available. Your shield-based kit already gives you considerably more room for mistakes than most DPS classes. Save the heavier defensive tools for elites, large pulls, or moments where continuing to attack would otherwise force you to stop and recover afterward.

Best AION 2 Templar PvE Build

For dungeon and boss tanking, the best starting setup is Empyrean Lord's Punishment, Battlefield Banner, Doom Shield, and Taunt. This gives Templar a mixture of threat control, party damage, Stagger pressure, mobility, and Judgment access instead of turning the build into pure defense.

Taunt is there because your job changes once another player is depending on you to control the boss. Establish Enmity early, keep the target facing away from the rest of the group when its mechanics allow it, and then use the rest of your rotation to maintain threat while still contributing damage.

Battlefield Banner is one of the most important offensive Stigmas because its later upgrades add Multi-Hit Chance and Weapon Damage Boost. Empyrean Lord's Punishment provides another ranged attack with Stagger value and eventually adds PvE Damage Boost after landing.

Doom Shield has a particularly useful interaction with Judgment and Annihilate. It creates a longer Judgment opening than several of your normal skills, and its upgrades can reset Annihilate's cooldown. The reset does not remove Annihilate's normal activation conditions, so do not mistake a refreshed icon for permission to use it against any target.

Taunt

When an encounter requires more party protection, Doom Shield can be exchanged for Comrade in Arms or Nezekan's Shield. Comrade in Arms redirects part of nearby allies' incoming damage to you, so it only makes sense when you have enough health and mitigation to absorb that extra pressure. Nezekan's Shield is easier to use around predictable party-wide hits because it gives the group a temporary barrier.

For easier content where threat and survival are already solved, replace Taunt with Executing Blade and push more damage instead.

Best AION 2 Templar PvP Build

Templar PvP is less about standing still and absorbing damage and more about forcing someone into a bad position. Executing Blade, Empyrean Lord's Punishment, Doom Shield, and Nezekan's Shield give you a strong mix of initiation, Defense reduction, control, burst, and protection.

Poach is one of your best ways to punish poor positioning because it can pull a vulnerable target toward you. Doom Shield offers another way to close from range while also opening Judgment, and Empyrean Lord's Punishment adds another ranged Stun opportunity as you enter.

Executing Blade should be used during a real attack window because it reduces the target's Defense and gains additional damage against targets suffering an Impact-type status. Templar has enough control options to create those windows without immediately spending every offensive cooldown on the first target you touch.

Best PvP Stigmas
Executing Blade
Empyrean Lord's Punishment
Doom Shield
Nezekan's Shield

Nezekan's Shield gives you protection after committing, which is especially useful because Templar often has to move directly into the part of the fight everyone else is trying to avoid. Its later upgrades increase the barrier duration and add additional Damage Tolerance while it remains active.

For coordinated group PvP, Comrade in Arms can replace Nezekan's Shield when your team specifically wants damage sharing. For a more defensive personal setup, Second Skin can replace an offensive Stigma to gain additional PvP Damage Tolerance.

Best Templar Skills and Upgrade Priority

Judgment should be one of your highest priorities because its later cooldown-removal specialization changes how the class plays. Once unlocked, Judgment can be repeated inside the short activation windows created by Shield Smite, Warding Strike, Doom Shield, and other eligible skills.

Punishment and Pummel make up the other major part of the damage core. Punishment gives you charged burst, while Pummel and Punishing Strike fill the space between Judgment opportunities without requiring a specific trigger.

Warding Strike deserves particular attention in PvE because it can provide Block and eventually grant party Damage Tolerance. Vicious Strike works well alongside it because its hits can reduce Warding Strike's cooldown.

Leveling: Judgment → Punishment → Pummel → Vicious Strike → Warding Strike
PvE: Judgment → Punishment → Pummel → Warding Strike → Vicious Strike
PvP: Judgment → Punishment → Annihilate → Debilitating Smash → Defiance

Defiance remains a utility investment rather than a normal part of your damage rotation. It removes listed crowd-control effects and gives you Tenacity, while its cooldown is not shortened by normal cooldown-reduction effects.

Best Templar Skill Specializations

Templar specializations are unusually important because several of them alter how your entire rotation flows rather than simply increasing one skill's damage.

Judgment: Extra damage, Critical Hit, remove cooldown

Punishment PvE: damage over time, Skill Speed, ignore Block and Evasion on Critical Hit

Punishment PvP: Skill Speed, mobile use, ignore Block and Evasion on Critical Hit

Pummel: HP absorption through Punishing Strike, stronger single-target damage, additional Punishing Strike damage

Vicious Strike: Multi-Hit, Warding Strike cooldown reduction, Threatening Blow chain

Warding Strike: reduced cooldown, additional Block, party Damage Tolerance

Shield Smite PvP: Debilitating Smash trigger, reduced cooldown, area Stun

Debilitating Smash PvP: Incoming Heal reduction, Block and Evasion bypass, cooldown reset chance on Block

Defiance PvP: HP recovery, longer Tenacity, PvP Damage Tolerance during Tenacity

Judgment's cooldown-removal choice should be taken as soon as you can support it. It does not make Judgment permanently available; you still need an eligible activation window. The benefit is that you can spend the entire window on repeated Judgment hits instead of opening several different windows at the same time and wasting their overlap.

Best Stats for Templar in AION 2

Templar is one of the easiest classes to build badly by leaning too far in either direction. Stacking nothing but defense gives you a tank that survives but contributes little, while building like a pure DPS class can leave you unable to perform the role your group invited you for.

While leveling, Attack, Accuracy, Critical Hit, Combat Speed, and Weapon Damage are useful because most normal content does not require extreme mitigation.

In group PvE, first make sure you have enough HP, Block, and Damage Tolerance to survive the encounter comfortably. Once that baseline is solved, start pushing Accuracy, Attack, Combat Speed, Weapon Damage Boost, Critical Hit, and cooldown reduction.

PvP requires enough Accuracy for your control and burst to connect, followed by HP, PvP Damage Tolerance, Status Effect Resist, and then offensive stats.

Leveling: Attack → Accuracy as needed → Critical Hit → Combat Speed → Weapon Damage
PvE: HP / Block / Damage Tolerance until comfortable → Accuracy → Attack → Combat Speed → Weapon Damage → Critical Hit → Cooldown Reduction
PvP: Accuracy → HP → PvP Damage Tolerance → Status Effect Resist → Combat Speed → Attack and Critical Hit

Do not judge equipment entirely by the Combat Power increase shown on the item. Our AION 2 How to Increase Combat Power guide explains why the highest CP option is not automatically the best piece for your build.

AION 2 Templar PvE Rotation and Tanking Priorities

Templar PvE should be played around threat first and Judgment windows second. At the start of a boss fight, establish Enmity and position the target so dangerous frontal attacks are aimed away from the group whenever the encounter allows it.

Once the boss is stable, begin rotating your Judgment-opening skills rather than stacking them all together. Shield Smite and Warding Strike create short Judgment windows, while Doom Shield gives you a slightly longer opportunity.

After Judgment's cooldown-removal specialization is active, continue pressing Judgment while that particular window remains open. Only create the next window after the current one has ended.

Establish Enmity and boss position
Activate Battlefield Banner during a stable damage window
Use Empyrean Lord's Punishment when you can stay on target
Open a Judgment window with Shield Smite, Warding Strike, or Doom Shield
Repeat Judgment while the window remains active
Use Pummel and Punishing Strike between windows
Use Vicious Strike for MP support and Warding Strike cooldown reduction
Use Flash Rampage during Stagger

Punishment should be charged when mechanics allow it, but do not stand inside an incoming boss attack simply to finish the cast. Templar is durable, not exempt from mechanics.

Successful Blocks also create value beyond reducing incoming damage. They can activate Fury for a party damage increase and open Debilitating Smash opportunities, which is why Block remains relevant even after you have enough raw HP to survive.

AION 2 Templar PvP Combo and Priorities

Templar PvP should begin by deciding whether you want to pull the target to you or take yourself to the target. Poach punishes enemies standing where they should not be, while Doom Shield gives you a direct approach and starts a Judgment opportunity at the same time.

Empyrean Lord's Punishment adds another ranged control chance, after which Stun or Knockdown can enable Annihilate. Executing Blade should then be used during the pressure window to lower Defense and increase the value of the attacks that follow.

Poach a vulnerable target or engage with Doom Shield
Use Empyrean Lord's Punishment for ranged pressure and control
Use Annihilate after a valid Stun or Knockdown
Apply Executing Blade during the burst window
Repeat Judgment during available activation windows
Use Punishment when a safe charge window exists
Use Nezekan's Shield when the enemy commits damage back onto you

Debilitating Smash becomes especially useful against healers because its PvP specialization can heavily reduce Incoming Heal. It can be opened through a successful Block or triggered through the appropriate Shield Smite specialization.

Keep Defiance available for control that would otherwise stop your entire engage. If the enemy uses their own Defiance or gains another temporary immunity effect, hold your next control until that protection has ended instead of wasting it immediately.

Best Templar Gear, Arcana and Daevanion

Templar uses a Longsword and Shield, with gear choices balancing survivability against enough offense to maintain threat and contribute meaningful damage.

For PvE weapons and offensive pieces, look for useful combinations of Attack, Accuracy, Combat Speed, Weapon Damage Boost, Critical Hit, and other damage bonuses after your defensive requirements are covered. Defensive pieces should help you reach the HP, Block, Damage Tolerance, and resistance levels required for the content you are actually tanking.

PvP gear should place more weight on HP, PvP Damage Tolerance, Status Effect Resist, and Accuracy while still preserving enough Combat Speed and offensive stats to keep pressure on a controlled target.

Arcana should reinforce the skills that make the build function rather than simply chasing the highest-rarity cards. Judgment, Punishment, Pummel, Warding Strike, Shield Smite, and the passives that improve threat, Block, and party damage are all strong skill-level targets.

Daevanion follows the same principle. Reach the skill breakpoints that change Judgment, Punishment, Pummel, and Warding Strike first, then branch into the defensive and offensive stat nodes that match the content you play most.

Leveling: Drop unnecessary tank-only tools and use pulls, charges, Judgment, and higher damage to move through the campaign faster.

PvE: Hold threat and survive first, then turn every Judgment window and successful Block into additional party damage.

PvP: Force enemies into bad positions, create Stun or Knockdown windows, lower their Defense, and protect yourself after committing.
