Graveyard Keeper 2 Hypno Device: How to Get & Charge It

The Hypno Device in Graveyard Keeper 2 starts as a quest item, but it eventually becomes part of a much larger problem: keeping a growing zombie workforce from hurting your church attendance. You first deal with it during Congregation Trouble, then continue producing Charged Hypno Devices later for the PR Machine.

Why You Need Them Later

Buy It From Gunter, Then Charge It With Faith

You get the Hypno Device from Gunter, the Astrologer, in the Astrologer's Tower during the Congregation Trouble quest. After buying the device, take it to the Formulation Bench in the Abandoned Tower and combine it with 1 Faith to create a Charged Hypno Device.

The charging recipe requires Anatomy Mastery 2.

Charged Hypno Device
Workstation: Formulation Bench
1 Hypno Device
1 Faith
Anatomy Mastery 2
Normal output: 1 Charged Hypno Device

If you have the Alchemist perk, the craft can also produce one additional Charged Hypno Device. The database lists that bonus at a 50% chance, so don't plan around getting two every time.

Faith is therefore the recurring resource behind the device rather than just a one-time quest requirement. If you're short on it, the Graveyard Keeper 2 Faith guide covers how the church and ceremonies feed your supply.

The Recipe Only Appears During Congregation Trouble

Having a Hypno Device and a Formulation Bench is not enough if the charging recipe hasn't unlocked yet.

The recipe is added during Congregation Trouble. That quest follows Gunter's worker-related progression and the ceremony sequence tied to your expanding zombie workforce.

If the device is sitting in your inventory but you can't charge it, check the quest before assuming the Formulation Bench is wrong.

You also need access to the Formulation Bench itself. The source material ties the station to Church Lighting I, while the Hypno Device recipe is unlocked separately through Congregation Trouble.

So there are really two gates:

If You Can't Charge It
Make sure the Formulation Bench is available
Progress Congregation Trouble far enough to unlock the recipe
Bring 1 Hypno Device and 1 Faith
Make sure you have Anatomy Mastery 2

The First Charged Device Goes Back to Gunter

Your first Charged Hypno Device is part of the quest chain rather than something you should immediately save for later production.

Take one back to Gunter. The next Congregation Trouble step then asks you to perform a test sermon.

Completing that sermon awards 10 Gunter reputation and places the PR Machine at your home area. At that point, Hypno Devices stop being just a quest hand-in and become a repeatable resource tied to zombie management.

This sequence exists because expanding your undead workforce eventually affects your congregation. Once you exceed the supported zombie limit, you receive a debuff that can hurt attendance and Faith production.

The PR Machine Turns Charged Devices Into More Zombie Capacity

After the quest, Charged Hypno Devices are consumed by the PR Machine to temporarily raise how many zombies your operation can support.

The basic PR Machine recipe uses 2 Charged Hypno Devices and raises the zombie limit by 10 for one week.

There are also larger operations:

PR Machine Hypno Device Uses
+10 zombie limit: 2 Charged Hypno Devices — 1 week
+20 zombie limit: 3 Charged Hypno Devices — 2 weeks
+30 zombie limit: 5 Charged Hypno Devices — 3 weeks

The higher PR Machine recipes also incorporate Newspapers. That's worth knowing because the interface can make the system look more confusing than it is.

If the machine isn't letting you add Newspapers while you're using the basic option, that isn't necessarily a bug. The entry-level +10 recipe is the one built around 2 Charged Hypno Devices, while Newspapers come into the higher PR recipes.

The machine is supplied on the day marked by the Gluttony symbol, and the increase is temporary. You're buying more zombie allowance for a set period, not permanently removing the limit.

More Zombies Eventually Make Hypno Devices a Maintenance Item

The Hypno Device matters more as your operation scales.

Once you're running zombies across resource gathering, farming, transport, and the Factory, it becomes much easier to push beyond the workforce limit that Congregation Trouble introduces.

Going over that limit applies the related debuff. Simply improving the church does not solve that particular problem because church quality and the zombie-limit penalty are separate systems.

That makes Charged Hypno Devices part of the ongoing cost of a large automated workforce. The more heavily you rely on zombies, the more reason you have to keep spare devices and Faith ready before the next PR Machine cycle.

If you're still building out that workforce, the Graveyard Keeper 2 Zombies guide covers resurrection, Red Skulls, worker roles, tools, perks, and automation.

And once those workers start moving into large production chains, the Graveyard Keeper 2 Factory guide explains Zombie Carousels, conveyor power, Assembly benches, and setting up automated lines.

Don't Treat the First One as a One-Off Quest Item

The first Hypno Device can make the mechanic look disposable: buy it, charge it, hand it to Gunter, finish the sermon.

That's only the introduction.

Charged Hypno Devices remain useful afterward because the PR Machine repeatedly consumes them. If your zombie count is growing, it's worth keeping extra Faith available and charging devices before you actually need the additional allowance.

You can carry Charged Hypno Devices in Universal Bags and Big Universal Bags, and they stack to 20. They also cannot be sold to a trader, which fits their role as a progression and workforce-management item rather than something intended for profit.

So the full loop is: buy a Hypno Device from Gunter, charge it with Faith at the Formulation Bench, use the first one to finish Congregation Trouble, then continue making Charged Hypno Devices whenever your PR Machine needs to support a larger zombie workforce.
