Graveyard Keeper 2 Tired: How It Works & How to Remove It

Tired is an important part of Graveyard Keeper 2's daily loop because it affects both how efficiently you can keep working and how quickly Insanity can build. Energy and sleep are tracked separately, so the best time to rest depends on more than simply watching your Energy bar run low.

You Get Tired From Staying Awake, Not Running Out of Energy

Tired in Graveyard Keeper 2 is triggered by staying awake for an extended period rather than by draining your Energy bar. Reaching 0 Energy does not automatically make the Keeper Tired.

The status generally appears after roughly two in-game days without sleeping. You can spend Energy, restore it with food, and continue working during that time without immediately triggering the debuff.

Tired and Energy Are Separate Systems
• Working drains Energy
• Food restores Energy
• Reaching 0 Energy does not make you Tired
• Staying awake long enough triggers the Tired status
• Sleeping resets the sleep cycle

I find it much easier to treat Energy as your short-term work meter and Tired as a longer timer running in the background. Food lets you extend how much you accomplish between rests, but it doesn't replace sleep indefinitely.

The Blue Zz Icon Means You're Tired

When the Keeper actually becomes Tired, a blue circular icon with sleeping Zs appears near the top-center of the screen.

Hover over the icon and the status is identified as Lack of sleep. This is the state that matters if you're waiting to rest for Insanity reduction or deciding whether it's worth continuing a long work session.

You can still have Energy remaining when the Tired icon appears. Likewise, an empty Energy bar does not mean the status is active.

You're Actually Tired When:
• The blue Zz icon appears
• The tooltip shows Lack of sleep
• Work begins carrying the Tired penalties

That icon is the reliable checkpoint. If it isn't on-screen, you're low on Energy rather than suffering from Lack of sleep.

Sleep in Your Bed to Remove the Tired Debuff

Once Lack of sleep appears, return home and sleep in your bed to clear Tired.

Food can refill Energy, and other items can reduce Insanity, but neither one removes the Tired status itself. Sleeping is what resets it.

After waking up, the blue Zz icon should disappear and your Energy will be replenished.

That makes Tired a useful cutoff point during longer gathering or crafting sessions. You can stretch a productive day quite far with food, but there is less benefit to continuing once the Lack of sleep penalties begin stacking onto everything else you're doing.

Working While Tired Increases Energy Use and Insanity

The real cost of Tired comes from continuing to work while the debuff is active.

Actions performed while Tired use additional Energy and cause Insanity to rise more aggressively. As Insanity takes over part of your Energy bar, the amount of usable Energy you have available also starts shrinking.

Working While Tired Causes:
• Higher Energy costs
• More Insanity from work
• Less usable Energy as Insanity rises
• More food consumption if you keep pushing

This is why I usually treat the Zz icon as the end of a major work cycle. Normal Energy loss is easy enough to manage with food, but working through Tiredness means you're spending more resources while also damaging your available Energy pool.

Sleep While Tired If You Want to Reduce Insanity

Sleep and Insanity have an important interaction in Graveyard Keeper 2: sleeping can reduce Insanity, but the Keeper needs to actually be Tired when you go to bed.

If you sleep every time your Energy gets low, you can refill your Energy and reset the sleep cycle without ever reaching the blue Zz status. In that situation, the purple Insanity portion of the bar may remain even though you're regularly resting.

If your goal is specifically to use sleep to lower Insanity, stay awake until Lack of sleep appears and then go to bed.

Sleep removes a fixed amount of Insanity rather than guaranteeing a completely clean bar, so a large buildup may still leave some purple Energy behind afterward.

If Sleep Isn't Lowering Your Insanity:
• Check that the blue Zz icon is active first
• Don't use low Energy as your Tired indicator
• Sleep after Lack of sleep appears
• Expect very high Insanity to require more than one reduction method

This also changes how I approach the day compared to simply sleeping whenever the Energy bar is nearly empty. Food can keep you working much longer, while waiting for the real Tired status gives your eventual sleep more value if Insanity has started building up.

Berry Pies and Beer Let You Manage Insanity Between Sleeps

You don't have to rely entirely on sleep to keep Insanity down.

Berry Pies are one of the better early options because each pie restores 30 Energy while also reducing Insanity by 3. A batch uses 4 Dough and 6 Berries to produce 4 pies, so they become practical to stock once your farming and kitchen setup are established.

Useful Insanity Options
• Berry Pie: Restores 30 Energy and removes 3 Insanity
• Beer: Reduces Insanity without restoring Energy
• Sleep while Tired: Clears the Tired status and removes a set amount of Insanity

Beer is useful when Energy isn't the issue and you simply want to bring Insanity down, while Berry Pies are much better suited to an active workday because they solve both problems at once.

Later progression also gives Alcohol a much broader role beyond simply dealing with the Keeper's mental state. The Graveyard Keeper 2 Alcohol guide covers how to produce it, while the Graveyard Keeper 2 Alchemy guide covers the larger crafting system surrounding it.

I wouldn't use food as a reason to work endlessly through the Tired debuff, though. Berry Pies are excellent for extending normal work periods, but once Lack of sleep appears, every additional task becomes less efficient.

The cleanest routine is to use food for Energy, manage smaller amounts of Insanity as they appear, and sleep once the actual Tired status activates. That keeps your available Energy high without letting Lack of sleep turn an otherwise productive day into a resource drain.

For more progression and mechanic breakdowns, the Graveyard Keeper 2 guides cover the other systems and unlocks you'll run into throughout the game.
