Graveyard Keeper 2 Special Wood: How to Get & Unlock It
Special Wood is one of those Graveyard Keeper 2 materials that looks like it should come from simply finding a better tree, upgrading an Axe, or exploring deeper into the Forest. It doesn't work like normal lumber, though, and reaching the point where you can reliably get it requires specific story progression.

Buy Special Wood From Harold in the Stilt Houses
The first reliable way to get Special Wood in Graveyard Keeper 2 is from Harold, the master woodcarver found in the Stilt Houses. After advancing far enough to unlock his Special Wood interaction, Harold sells the material for 1 Silver each.
There's one detail that makes this surprisingly easy to miss: Special Wood isn't presented through a normal trader inventory. You buy it directly through Harold's conversation options.
Special Wood Purchase Options
• 1 Special Wood: 1 Silver
• 10 Special Wood: 10 Silver
• 50 Special Wood: 50 Silver
• 100 Special Wood: 1 Gold
If you've reached Harold but he isn't offering any of these options, the problem isn't money or merchant reputation. You haven't completed the progression that actually unlocks his Special Wood supply yet.
I wouldn't waste time checking normal trees or upgrading your Woodworking Workbench when this happens. Special Wood is deliberately progression-gated rather than being the next tier of ordinary lumber.
Special Wood Unlocks Through Harold's Organic Music Quest
Harold becomes relevant through the Organic Music questline in the Stilt Houses. His wood-catching machine isn't functioning when you first reach this stage, which is why simply finding Harold isn't enough to immediately buy the material.
You need to help Harold repair the machine before his Special Wood purchase option becomes available.
Harold's Repair Requires
• 2 Building Kit I
• 1 Iron Kit II
Once those materials are handed over during Organic Music, you can speak with Harold again and purchase Special Wood directly through his dialogue.
This is also why Special Wood can feel like it's appearing unusually late. You can encounter recipes that require it before you've reached the character progression necessary to actually obtain it.

The Western Forest Isn't an Early Special Wood Farming Spot
Special Wood causes some confusion because there is also later progression involving the western Forest and zombie woodcutting.
If you've walked toward the dangerous Forest area and been stopped because of the wolves, you haven't overlooked a secret entrance or an Axe upgrade. You aren't supposed to simply walk inside and chop Special Wood yourself at that point.
Later progression can involve zombies handling dangerous resource collection for you, similar to how undead workers can take over jobs in areas that aren't practical for the Keeper to work manually.
That distinction matters because it gives you two very different questions:

• Progress Organic Music
• Find Harold in the Stilt Houses
• Repair his wood-catching machine
• Buy the Special Wood you need
If You're Looking for Later Automation
• Continue advancing the main questlines
• Develop your zombie workforce
• Treat dangerous resource zones as automation progression rather than normal gathering areas
I think this is the easiest way to understand Special Wood: Harold solves the immediate material problem, while the broader zombie systems are part of GK2 gradually moving you away from doing every resource job yourself.

Don't Buy Huge Amounts of Special Wood Immediately
Harold lets you buy Special Wood in some very large batches, but that doesn't mean you should immediately drop 1 Gold on 100 pieces.
Special Wood has several important uses, but early on I'd buy for the project directly in front of me and keep the rest of my Silver available. Graveyard Keeper 2 has enough competing money sinks that turning all of your cash into a pile of wood you won't use for hours isn't especially helpful.
The Church Organ alone needs 4 Special Wood, so that's the obvious first amount to secure when Organic Music points you toward it.
After that, your demand starts expanding through upgraded components, equipment, and Factory production. That's the point where buying larger batches becomes much more convenient.
Special Wood Feeds Into More Than the Church Organ
The Organ is likely to be your introduction to Special Wood, but it isn't a one-quest material. Special Wood becomes part of several higher-tier woodworking, equipment, construction, and Factory recipes.

• Wooden Kit II: 1 Special Wood
• Carved Wood: 2 Special Wood
• Pro Rod: 2 Special Wood
• Prosthetic Hand: 1 Special Wood
• Elegant Prosthetic Hand: 2 Special Wood
• Comfortable Chair: 3 Special Wood
Wooden Kit II is particularly important because 1 Special Wood produces 3 Wooden Kit II at an appropriately upgraded Assembly Bench. Those kits then feed into additional higher-tier construction materials rather than being an isolated craft.
This is where Special Wood starts becoming more of a production resource than a quest item. Once your Graveyard Keeper 2 Factory is developing, keeping some Special Wood available prevents another material bottleneck when you begin working through upgraded kits and automated recipes.
You can also study a piece of Special Wood at the Study Table. Because each material can only be studied once, I prefer doing that after securing whatever pieces I immediately need for progression rather than accidentally leaving myself one short for a quest craft.
If Harold Isn't Selling Special Wood, Keep Progressing the Quest
The most common Special Wood roadblock is reaching Harold and assuming that merely meeting him should unlock the material.
It doesn't.
Harold needs to reach the appropriate stage of Organic Music and have his wood-catching machine repaired. Until that happens, talking to him repeatedly or looking for a hidden merchant screen won't fix the problem.
If Special Wood Is Missing
• Make sure you've reached the Stilt Houses
• Continue the Organic Music questline
• Complete Harold's machine repair
• Speak to Harold again after the hand-in
• Look for the Special Wood dialogue option rather than a standard shop
If you're still earlier in Graveyard Keeper 2 and haven't reached this part of the map or story yet, Special Wood is simply ahead of your current progression. You don't need to hunt the Forest for a rare tree or repeatedly check every wood-processing station.
Once Harold's supply is available, the material itself becomes straightforward: buy what you need, reserve the first pieces for progression-critical crafts, and start keeping a larger stock only when Wooden Kit II and the later production chain begin consuming it regularly.
