Over the Hill How to Unlock New Cars

Over the Hill starts you with only part of its vehicle roster, with more cars becoming available as you explore and complete activities. Unlocking a particular vehicle is not always as simple as driving to one fixed location, either, because the game uses both Trial Run rewards and vehicle rescues to expand your garage.

How to Unlock New Cars in Over the Hill

You can unlock new cars in Over the Hill by completing Trial Runs and by rescuing vehicles you encounter while exploring. Trial Runs can award another vehicle for your garage, while some cars are found in the world and need to be recovered to a save point before the unlock is completed.

That means there is not one single progression path for every vehicle. If you are looking for a specific car, you may need to keep completing Trial Runs, explore for recoverable vehicles, or continue farther into the game depending on how that particular unlock is obtained.

The garage is where your unlocked vehicles become useful long term, so finding a car in the world should not be confused with simply being able to drive it temporarily. The important part is completing whatever unlock requirement is attached to that vehicle.

Unlocking Cars From Trial Runs

Trial Runs are one of the main ways to expand your vehicle collection. Completing them can unlock cars, but current player reports indicate that the vehicle reward is random rather than every Trial Run being permanently tied to one specific car.

This matters if you are hunting something specific. Completing a Trial Run does not necessarily mean the next vehicle you want will be the one you receive, so you may have to clear additional runs before it appears.

That also explains why two players at a similar point in the game can have different garages. The number of activities you have completed may be similar even if the exact vehicles awarded along the way are not.

If you are still working through the maps, it is worth completing Trial Runs as you encounter them rather than leaving all of them for later. Besides being part of the game's off-road challenge content, they are directly connected to building out the vehicle roster.

How to Rescue and Unlock Cars

Some new vehicles can instead be unlocked by finding them during exploration and completing a rescue. These are not simply scenery vehicles sitting around the map; recovering one successfully can add another car to your collection.

When you find a rescue vehicle, use your own vehicle and winch to recover it and get it to the required save point. The unlock is awarded once the rescue is successfully completed, rather than simply when you first discover the abandoned car.

This makes exploration important even if you are mainly interested in collecting vehicles. Leaving the main route, checking lakes, trails, and other remote parts of the map can lead to more than upgrades and discoveries because a new vehicle may be part of what you find.

If you regularly get stuck while exploring for these unlocks, our Over the Hill Tips and Tricks Guide covers winching, recovery tools, gearing, upgrades, and other ways to make difficult routes easier.

How Car Unlocks Work in Co-Op

Vehicle rescues do not automatically unlock for everyone in a co-op session just because one player completes the recovery nearby. Each player needs to participate in the rescue for the reward to count for them.

Players have reported successfully sharing a rescue unlock by attaching both vehicles to the same abandoned car and bringing it to the save point together. When both players were actively involved in recovering it, both received the vehicle reward.

So if you are playing with friends and everyone wants the same rescued vehicle, do not have one person handle the entire recovery while the others simply follow. Get each player involved before delivering the car so nobody reaches the end of the rescue without receiving the unlock.

How to Get a Specific Car in Over the Hill

There does not appear to be a simple fixed unlock order where every player receives the same cars one after another. Trial Run rewards can vary, while other vehicles are connected to rescues found during exploration.

If the car you want has not appeared yet, continue completing Trial Runs and exploring rather than assuming you missed a single mandatory story unlock. Players looking for vehicles such as the Bronco, Mammoth, Marshal, and other later cars have reported reaching different points without having the same vehicles available.

Because of the random element attached to Trial Run rewards, an exact location is also not necessarily meaningful for every vehicle. A guide claiming that one Trial Run always awards one specific car would be misleading unless that vehicle has a separate fixed rescue or unlock condition.

As more of the full-release unlock routes are confirmed, individual vehicle guides make more sense for cars with a reliable fixed requirement. For the overall system, however, Trial Runs and rescue activities are the two important places to focus.

Car Unlocks and Liveries Are Separate

Do not confuse unlocking a new vehicle with unlocking another appearance for one you already own. Over the Hill also has livery progression tied to driving individual vehicles.

For example, players have reported receiving a livery unlock after reaching 50 km in a specific car. That does not add another vehicle to the garage; it only gives the existing vehicle another cosmetic option.

If an unlock notification appears after putting significant mileage on one car, check its customization options before assuming you received a completely new vehicle. New cars come from the broader vehicle unlock system, while mileage milestones can instead reward liveries for cars already in your collection.
