Graveyard Keeper 2 Insanity Guide
Insanity in Graveyard Keeper 2 directly cuts into how much Energy you can hold. The purple portion of the Energy bar isn't just another meter sitting beside your stamina: it replaces usable Energy space, which is why eating can suddenly stop filling the bar as high as it used to. Corpse work adds to the problem, working while Tired can send it climbing much faster, and normal sleep isn't always enough to bring it back down. The best approach is to prevent major buildup, use food for small corrections, and save proper Tired sleep for the larger reset.

How to Prevent Insanity
The Purple Bar Is Lost Energy Capacity
As Insanity increases, the purple section takes over part of your Energy bar. Your current Energy can still be restored with food or sleep, but it cannot fill the space already occupied by Insanity.
That matters because a large Insanity buildup effectively makes every work session shorter. If the purple bar has swallowed a third of your normal capacity, even a strong meal can only refill what remains available.
I would judge Insanity by how much usable Energy it has taken rather than obsessing over keeping the meter completely empty. A small purple section is manageable. Once it starts noticeably cutting your working capacity, dealing with it becomes more worthwhile than repeatedly throwing food into a smaller bar.
Corpse Work Builds Insanity, but Tired Work Is Much Worse
Several of the Keeper's less pleasant jobs can raise Insanity. Corpse handling and autopsy work are documented sources, and players have also reported gains from other grim graveyard tasks.
The bigger risk comes from continuing to work after the Tired status appears. Tired is shown by a blue Zz-style status icon near the top of the screen. Once it's active, carrying on with normal labor can push Insanity upward much faster.
That creates two very different types of Insanity gain. Morgue work adds smaller amounts as part of normal progression, while ignoring Tired can turn an otherwise manageable meter into a much larger problem.
There is also an early perk reported to reduce Insanity gained from morgue work. If autopsies and corpse processing are where most of your buildup comes from, reducing the incoming amount is more efficient than constantly paying to remove it later.
Sleeping Only Helps Insanity When You're Actually Tired
Having zero Energy does not automatically mean the Keeper is Tired. You can go to bed with an empty blue bar, wake up with restored Energy, and see the purple Insanity section barely change.
For the larger Insanity reduction from sleep, wait for the blue Zz status to appear. Player testing and launch guides place the Tired state at roughly two in-game days without proper sleep, although the status icon itself is the better indicator than trying to count hours manually.
Once Tired appears, I'd stop extending the day with food. Working through that status can rapidly add Insanity, which partly defeats the reason you're staying awake in the first place.
Sleeping while Tired removes a large chunk of Insanity, but it does not necessarily wipe a heavily filled purple bar in one attempt. If your maximum Energy has already been cut dramatically, expect recovery to take more than one proper sleep or a combination of sleep and consumables.
Berry Pie Is Better for Keeping Insanity Under Control
Berry Pie removes 3 Insanity while restoring 30 Energy. One recipe produces four pies from 4 Dough and 6 Berries, making it a practical option once your wheat and cooking setup are established.
Its strength isn't the size of a single Insanity reduction. Three points is fairly small. Berry Pie works because it combines the two resources you're regularly managing anyway: it restores Energy and trims Insanity at the same time.
That makes it ideal for routine cleanup after morgue work. If the purple meter has only grown a little, eating a pie or two can keep the problem from becoming large enough to interfere with the rest of the day.
I wouldn't save Berry Pies exclusively for emergencies. Once half the bar is purple, removing 3 points per pie turns into a much bigger food bill than simply preventing that buildup in the first place.
Beer Is the Faster Emergency Option
Beer removes 12 Insanity and restores 52 Energy, giving it a much larger immediate effect than Berry Pie. It can be purchased from the tavern keeper, so you don't need an established cooking chain before using it.
The downside is that you're paying every time you correct the meter. Buying Beer regularly turns Insanity management into another drain on your early-game money, while Berry Pie eventually comes from resources you can produce yourself.
That gives Beer a good niche: use it when Insanity has jumped higher than you'd like and you don't want to wait for a Tired sleep cycle. Once your food production is comfortable, pies make more sense for everyday maintenance.
Match the Fix to How Bad the Purple Bar Is
There isn't much reason to treat every point of Insanity like an emergency. The most efficient solution changes depending on how far the purple section has spread.
Insanity Recovery
Small buildup: Berry Pie removes 3 Insanity while restoring Energy.
Moderate buildup: Beer removes 12 Insanity immediately.
Large buildup: Sleep once the blue Tired status is active, then use food or Beer for whatever remains.
If you're already close to the Tired state, spending a pile of consumables can be wasteful because a proper sleep is coming anyway. If you just started a long work period and picked up a few points from corpse handling, forcing yourself to stay awake until Tired makes equally little sense.
The better rhythm is to use consumables when you want to keep working and use sleep when the game's natural fatigue cycle reaches the point where sleep also clears Insanity.
Don't Let Energy Management Create an Insanity Problem
Food lets you stretch a day much further than your base Energy would normally allow, but Graveyard Keeper 2 now gives that strategy a limit. Once Tired appears, continuously eating and working can keep your Energy afloat while your maximum capacity gets eaten away by Insanity.
If you own the pre-order bonus, the Graveyard Keeper 2 Sauna can make food more efficient by giving you the Steamed Up buff, which increases Energy gained from food by 10%. It doesn't remove Insanity, but stretching each meal further is useful during the normal part of a work cycle before Tired appears.
My approach would be to carry a few Berry Pies once they're easy to produce, accept small amounts of purple rather than constantly chasing zero, and watch for the Tired icon instead of watching only the Energy number. Use Beer when you need immediate control, sleep when Tired finally arrives, and avoid turning that last stretch of the day into another hour of expensive Insanity cleanup.
Insanity becomes much less disruptive once you separate three different states: low Energy means you need Energy, purple on the bar means you need Insanity reduction, and the blue Zz icon means you've reached the point where sleep can efficiently deal with both.
