Graveyard Keeper 2 Iron Mine: Location & How to Unlock

The Iron Mine in Graveyard Keeper 2 is a major progression point for Iron Ore, Coal, and later Zombie Mining. It is located in the Forest, but reaching the entrance is only part of the process, since you also need the right quest progression and explosives before you can open it.

Open the Forest Mine With Explosives

The Iron Mine is in the Forest. Reaching it requires enough story progression to open access to that region, after which you can work toward clearing the mine entrance itself.

Players report that the route involves heading south through the Forest and progressing the quest involving the two vagabonds there. Completing their quest gives you the explosives needed to open the blocked mine entrance to the north.

There is also a progression check attached to using the explosives. Current player reports put it at Hammer or crafting proficiency level 8, so finding the mine early does not necessarily mean you can open it immediately.

Iron Mine Unlock Path
Reach the Forest
Progress the quest south of the Forest
Obtain the required explosives
Reach the blocked Mine entrance
Meet the required Hammer/Crafting proficiency
Use the explosives to open the Mine

The good news is that the Mine is not supposed to be your first source of iron. You can gather enough Iron Ore elsewhere to reach the tool and mastery requirements needed to open it.

Mine Surface Iron Before Chasing the Infinite Source

Iron Ore appears in several outdoor areas before you unlock automated mining. Confirmed locations include the outskirts around the Inquisition Base, the Forest, and the Swamp.

There are also several Iron Ore nodes close to the Mine entrance itself. Players specifically note that some of these rocks can look more like copper at first glance, so they are easy to walk past.

Other reported early deposits can be found south of the Graveyard and near the Vineyard.

I would mine every convenient surface node you pass during this stage instead of trying to rush the Zombie Mine immediately. You need iron to push the same progression chain that eventually makes manual iron gathering mostly irrelevant.

Early Iron Locations
South of the Graveyard
Around the Inquisition Base outskirts
Near the Vineyard
Around the Forest
Around the Swamp
Immediately outside the Mine entrance

Once mined, Iron Ore can be processed into the ingots needed for improved tools and the growing number of construction projects that begin consuming iron around this stage of the game.

Opening the Mine Does Not Unlock Infinite Iron

This is where a lot of players get stuck.

You can blow open the Mine entrance and walk inside without having the Zombie Miner technology available. The Mine itself is only the first unlock.

The renewable iron supply comes from Zombie Mining. To reveal that technology, you need to continue through the Mine and clear the blocked passage that reconnects it to the underground network leading back toward the Inquisition Base and your home.

Players who opened the Mine but still had blank or missing mining technologies reported that clearing this passage triggered a cutscene and exposed additional resource automation technologies, including iron, wood, stone and marble, clay, and sand.

So if the Zombie Miner is missing from your technology tree, do not keep searching the Mine for a random ore vein. Continue opening the route through it.

The Northern Passage Is the Real Zombie Mining Unlock

Inside the Mine, look for the blocked route leading toward the underground Inquisition Base connection. Steam players describe the relevant blockage as being toward the upper-right or northern section of the Mine.

One current player report lists the repair requirement as 4 Building Kits and 1 Reinforced Beam. Because that exact material count is coming from launch-week community testing, I would prepare those materials but still check the interaction prompt in your own build before crafting extras.

Once the passage is repaired and the connection is completed, the game unlocks the mining technologies needed for automation.

This underground connection also explains why the Mine and Graveyard Keeper 2 Factory progression overlap so much. The Mine is not an isolated resource area. It eventually becomes another branch of the larger underground production network beneath your property.

Use a Zombie Miner and a Separate Porter

After Zombie Mining is unlocked, research the Zombie Miner technology and use the Mine blueprint table to build the mining setup.

The functional setup needs at least two jobs covered:

Basic Zombie Mine Setup
Zombie Miner: 1 Zombie equipped with a Pickaxe
Zombie Porter: 1 separate Zombie assigned to transport resources

The miner produces the resources, while the porter handles delivery. Community reports note that the porter does not need mining equipment, while the actual miner should be equipped with a Pickaxe.

If you have already unlocked Rock or Marble automation but cannot place an Iron Miner, check the technology tree again. Players have confirmed that Zombie Miner is a separate technology from the Rock and Marble mining options.

For the broader worker system, including equipment, training, resurrection, and job assignments, the Graveyard Keeper 2 Zombies guide goes deeper into how your undead workforce works.

The Zombie Mine Can Supply Iron and Coal

The automated Mine is valuable for more than Iron Ore.

Players report that interacting with the Zombie Porter station lets you choose between Iron Ore, Coal, or both. That means the Mine can replace two separate gathering problems once it is running.

The resources are then transported back through the automated network toward your base. One player specifically reported the output appearing in the automatic box lifts south of the house after the underground base had been discovered.

Coal has also been reported as part of the Zombie Mine's output rather than something requiring an entirely separate mine setup.

There Isn't a Normal Infinite Iron Vein to Swing at Forever

If you entered the Mine expecting a giant permanent iron deposit, that expectation is what makes the area confusing.

The renewable supply is tied to Zombie Mining rather than a manual infinite vein. Players asking where the infinite iron deposit was were directed to the Zombie Miner system instead.

That creates three distinct stages of iron progression:

Iron Progression
Early game: Mine scattered outdoor Iron Ore nodes
Mid progression: Open and connect the Forest Mine
Long term: Automate Iron Ore and Coal with Zombie Mining

I think the best way to approach the Mine is to treat it as an automation unlock rather than a place you visit simply to swing a Pickaxe. Surface iron gets you through the bottleneck, opening the Mine advances the route, and reconnecting that route is what finally converts iron from a resource you actively hunt into something your zombies can keep supplying for you.
